It's like the transition that people have of war when they enlist. They all thought war was this grand spectacle, but that image gets tarnished when you realize the absolute hell on Earth that war is. Phenomenal soundtrack from the golden years of modern gaming.

The contrast between the opening of the song to the latter parts is really interesting. It starts off with a heroic symphony but soon devolves into an adrenaline fueled rush. Men who went to war at this time were expecting to go on a heroic adventure to defeat the enemy, but soon realize these rocks surrounded by water was hell on Earth.

World at War was the only Call of Duty game to have a really memorable soundtrack in my mind, Black Ops had a few good moments, but coincidentally the most standout moment for the soundtrack was during the mission Nova 6, during which the entire soundtrack was ripped straight from this game, as it was a flashback to WW2 - or rather, several months after WW2, but still fighting the Germans. Tracks like Final Push, Ambushed Again, and the music that plays between 4:50 and 7:15 will forever be burned into my memory, partially because of my insistence to play on Veteran despite the unfair hitscan and grenade spam causing me to be stuck on certain checkpoints for hours at a time - but mostly because of how awesome they are, and how well they complemented the phenomenal gameplay.

There have actually been quite a few good WW2 games since WAW, Post Scriptum and Hell Let Loose come to mind, plus Enlisted, Iron Front(which is technically a mod, turned into a game, then turned back into a mod) and Day of Infamy None are single player unfortunately so they don't really have a chance to tell any stories but they do a good job of portraying how chaotic and violent the conflict was through their environments and gameplay. Also Brothers in Arms is another series you'll probably appreciate if you want games that portray the war in all it's brutal heartbreaking reality, they're technically older than World At War but they're highly slept on and in my opinion the best overall WW2 games ever made.(yes, even better than COD5)

Sullivan: Hang in there, kid. The boat hits the beach. Polonsky: We need to get off this thing! The boat appears to be stuck. Polonsky: Aww shit! Sullivan: Driver, drop the ramp! That gun could zero in on us anytime. Koopman sticks his head over the side. Koopman: It's the coral. We're stuck on the... Koopman is shot in the head and hits the floor. The driver is also hit and killed, preventing him from deploying the ramp for the Marines to evacuate. Roebuck can only look down in shock at Koopman's corpse, which had part of his head blown off, exposing his brain and skull. Sullivan: Drop the ramp!
