fogito21 Robb was always afraid, and he didn't become stupid. He made mistakes, as any man did, but he wasn't stupid. He punished murderers within his own ranks that shamed him by violating his custody over innocents. He broke his promise to the Freys, yes, but he tried to make ammends. He could have not foreseen that an ancient guest right would be violated, no one could have. Also, keep in mind the odds were heavily stacked against him. He was a young man that took up the sword for his family and his people, and faced enemies much more experienced, greater in number, better equipped, better armoured and better fed. And yet he still never lost a battle. They had to resort to treachery and deceit of the most despicable variety to take him down, but the North remembers. The North remembers and they will never forget, and it's because the Starks were as honourable and inspiring of loyalty that the great houses of north will come to their aid always and see to it that they are restored their rightful place, with a Stark in Winterfell.

He was cursed by having a treacherous best friend, an uncle who did not understand shit for tactics, an psycho aunt who wouldn't help, and a mother whose wrong advise he listened too and whose right advise he did not listen too.
@Willyhams110 жыл бұрын
Sigurd Torvaldsson he wasn't cursed by anything - he was responsible for the mistakes that he made. He should have remembered that whether or not he was friends with Theon; he was still a hostage for Balon's good behaviour. Sending him back to Pyke to treat was idiotic. He gave too much freedom of command to Roose Bolton, the second most powerful lord in the North and then proceeded to insult the second most powerful Riverlord - Walder Frey. Your most powerful ally is your biggest rival. When you're highborn and a King no less, you cannot afford to be marrying for love. Robb was unstoppable in the field but was a disaster politically. Also he ought to have treated with Stannis the Mannis rather than Renly, seeing as Eddard died proclaiming him as King n'all.
@Grivian10 жыл бұрын
Rob The mistake with Bolton is a lot simpler than that. The mistake was not giving him too much power (inevitable when they are both fighting hundreds of miles apart), but giving him the command in the first place. Bolton is a very intelligent man and a powerful lord, but a terrible commander. He was not fit to lead the northern army. Even if the green fork battle was an unwinnable battle he still proved himself mediocre at several times with defeat after defeat. Only when Arya seized Harrenhal did his luck change. Robb admitted that Bolton scared him which is another reason why he shouldn't have got any power. Going to Renly was the right choice. Even if Stannis shits awesome and a north south rule with Robb and Stannis would be great Stannis would never agree to an alliance with Robb, not if the seven hells froze to ice. The two most logical alliances was obviously Renly and Balon Greyjoy. That and Lysa Arryn had she not been mental.
@Willyhams110 жыл бұрын
Sigurd Torvaldsson I wouldn't say that Roose is a terrible commander. It's difficult to base his abilities on any of the battles in the books seeing as the The Green Fork was essentially a distraction. At the time of The Ruby Ford, Roose had already planned to betray Robb. He lost most of the men he did on purpose to Gregor Clegane - strangely enough all the men that had already crossed the ford were Bolton and Karstark men. I'll agree that between the two of them Renly was the obvious choice seeing as at the time he had the Tyrells backing him. But if he's willing to dishonour himself by allying himself with someone who is obviously not the rightful King of the Iron Throne then why is he unable to "dishonour" himself by taking a girls virtue and not marry her? Had he compromised with Stannis he would have also gained the Navy he wanted from Balon.
@Grivian10 жыл бұрын
Rob The green fork doesn't really count yes. He did an okay job, but he lost a lot of men. More that he needed to in order for the distraction to work. But don't forget the failed crossing while Tywin was in Harrenhal, embarrassing defeat which made several northern lords captives. And what about the retarded decision to send a third of his foot to Duskendale? Well maybe he planned Robb's demise from the very beginning, only pretending to lose. I think the show did it right. It was less about honor and more about actually loving the girl. He was a boy and didn't have enough wisdom yet. He needed a better advisor than his mother and his warlords. He should have given command of the second army to the Greatjon and keeping Bolton as his personal advisor. Then he would receive Bolton's wisdom while keeping him close.

There was only one house that really betrayed Robb - Bolton. Robb's mother told him right away "don't trust Roose Bolton, and don't let Theon out of your sight." Roose planned to betray Robb almost immediately because there's thousands of years of bad blood between the two families. Every chance Roose had to let Robb's troops die and save his own, he arranged it. Robb should never have allowed Roose to command any Stark forces. Robb also forgot that Theon was the only thing keeping the Greyjoys out of the fight. Cat letting Jamie go was bad enough, and betraying Walder Frey (also traditionally untrustworthy) was the last straw. The Freys were sworn to the Tulleys, not the Starks, and Frey oaths have never been worth anything to begin with.
@kejserrige7 жыл бұрын

I love how even as unlikable Theon was at this time, even he knew this was a life or death gamble. I loved how that’s all he had to say too, “good, it means you’re not stupid.” There’s a big difference between being ignorant and arrogant. Theon is arrogant, not ignorant of the danger coming. A lot said, in such a small line. Edit: for people who don’t know the difference between arrogant and ignorant. Arrogant means you build up your self worth to be more than it is, and THATS definitely Theon. But ignorant means lacking common sense in general, which Theon isn’t ignorant. His one line means, he understood how drastic it was to call the banners.

Awesome scene, of course Robb's afraid he's been forced into becoming lord of Winterfell which is one thing, and now just made the decision to declare war, which takes more balls than any of us will ever get to understand.

Actually just calling the banners is not a declaration of war, in the books Dorne called its banners at the beginning of the war but did not join either side (yet? I am at like the 2/3 of the 3rd book)

***** No need for spoilers, thanks. I am at the half of the 5th book, and Doran plays rather cleverly, along with Wyman Manderly.

kumisz You are right. Calling banners is akin to modern-day mobilization. Calling all the banners is what we would call a general mobilization, which is not a declaration of war but adds a lot of diplomatic tension.

I didn't mind Theon so much when he was with the Starks. At times he seemed to have his own inate wisdom at times ( like when he saved Bran with one skillfully placed arrow). It was his desire to please his father that was his downfall.

After he lost his cock he said that it was an impossible choice for me Stark or GreyJoy Jon replied by saying you didn't have to choose you're both stark and greyjoy. By all means I'd do what he did going back to his original father FOR ROBB but once he asks me to betray him im not doing it. I'd choose Stark if i was Theon. Idk about anybody else.

Seeing Theon talk this way really shows how great his actor is. Compare this as to how Theon talks in Season 7. The trauma was real to Theon and he was consistent.

I love Luwin in this scene, that smile trying to fight its way onto his face, despite a Master's role demanding he be neutral in all things political; he is obviously proud of this decision, but he has to remain the stoic.

I'd say the Master wrote all those messages very very fast, but something like calling the banners is probably already written to all of the houses in case it needs to be done, still those birds went out quick too.

Theon has always been there for the Starks, witnessing some of their greatest moments. Watching Robb rebel against the King by calling his banners. Watching Jon and even suggesting that Ghost should be his direwolf. Watching Sansa...er, you know what I mean.

Luwin, yes, but I wouldn’t call Robb underrated. I’d say he’s universally loved and mourned by fans.
