His honor as a king's guard is based not only on how well he protected the king, how loyal he was, but his conduct in his own personal life. He went from being Robert's enemy, to being willing to die to protect Robert. In the case of Joffrey, it was never Joffrey was never going to be king, Robert wanted Ned to basically help Joffrey grow to becoming a good leader. You can even argue Barristan did not know Joffrey was a bastard (even if he had the strongest suspicions of him being so). As a king's guard, his first loyalty was to the king. Yes Joffrey and Cersei went against Robert's wishes, wishes Barristan understood came from Robert, but Barristan's first loyalty in that moment was to Joffrey, not to Ned. In that regard, Barristan was showing his honor. Ned certainly doesn't question it. Even when he is coming to arrest Ned, he wants no harm to come to Barristan. @@dextercochran4916 But he did have claim to the throne. The letter only names him as regent. Which isn't assuming the throne, just rulling on its behalf. In fact, Ned is fucking himself by saying it. He was named as *Joffery's* Regent. Because he never told Robert of the incest, Robert believed Joffery to be his son. Ned fucked it all up. Without Joffery there's no Regent, removing his own authority. He definetly should have pretended Joff was the rightful king, bent the knee, but maintain he is regent. Then he could have more time to properly shift things. Littlefinger and the City Watch only killed them when they openly moved against them. Had he bent the knee, they probably wouldn't have. So Littlefinger betrays Ned and helps facilitate the chaotic War of the 5 Kings and banks on the winning side. But now apparently he's stupid enough to work with the CHILDREN of the incorruptible Ned Stark as if they won't inherit his ideas and reward him? Total U-Turn, I don't think Littlefinger would've actually kept the Vale Army in Winterfell where his KNOWN enemy Lord Royce can congregate with the Starks. A typical Littlefinger move would've been to assassinate Jon Snow and put Sansa in charge and play off the Lannisters (who he was still on good terms with) and the North by feeding both sides false intelligence and siding with the winner. If he loses or gets caught, the Vale is virtually impenetrable with mountains and the Eyrie to defend.

That’s a good point. Ned was way too quick with the claims. What I like about this scene and Ned's character as a whole is that the possibility of betrayal and the threats against his life and his freedom don't sway his actions whatsoever. Sure, he may have thought that Petyr and the city watch would support him, but that wouldn't actually make him act any different even if he knew they would betray him. Similarly, even when he's in jail and his position is doomed he isn't swayed by the threats and he doesn't compromise until he dies. People who look at that and call him foolish, for not seeing the betrayal coming, for staying in king's landing unlike Renly and Stannis, for supposedly "hoping" that cersei and the others would be honorable, are missing the point. The honour that Ned upholds is a social institution, what in philosophy is called the golden rule; "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and it is anything but foolish. Because the only way to have a stable and prosperous society is when people at least mostly uphold that honour, without it society collapses and even the people who think they are taking advantage of it won't be safe for long. Sure, people like Cersei and Joffrey can be opportunistic and shameless for their own gains, but all they are doing is unravelling the fabric of society and creating the chaos and lawlessness that will ensure their eventual downfall. Because without that honour to hold things together, everyone else is gonna start acting just as shamelessly as you are, in other words it's a negative sum game for everyone involved. That is also what Martin wants to show us later in the story, especially in a feast for crows, where lawlessness and opportunism have escalated to a point where the entire country is devastated and plagued with crime, most of the pretenders are dead or dying, politics have devolved into backstabbing and scheming all around, and society as a whole is much poorer. In other words, Ned isn't foolish enough to think that everyone will surely uphold the same honour he does, he simply understands that compromising on that honour is a slippery slope that ends up being even worse for everyone than his supposedly "pointless" death could ever be.

I disagree, a: the golden rule doesn’t apply since he isn’t doing what he wished others would do unto him so much as he is blindly hoping that his enemies will follow the golden rule. B: he has a family, blindly doing what is “honorable” when you have a family and 7 kingdoms that more or less depend on you is not right, what is right and to a degree honorable is to do everything in your power to help those whom depend on you especially when it is to the degree of which children depend on their parents. He could have saved his wifes, child’s and countless others lives but instead he chose to prioritize an arbitrary set of morals. A father has a duty to above all else protect his family.

In the comics Batman once said, "if you kill a killer the amount of killers in the world stays the same." In neds case, betraying Jeffrey and cersei by following renlys plan makes him no better than the evil hes trying to vanquish. He's fighting tyranny with tyranny. By taking the approach he does, he can, instead, fight tyranny using morality. Giving up on this fundamental trait takes him down a path that makes the world a worse place.

I'm just curious why Ser Barristan, as a loyal knight to king Robert, did not stand with Stark? Robert gave the order and signed it while he was still alive, making Stark's authority as regent absolute. Defending him would have been his sworn duty as Jeoffrey was technically not yet King and Cersei was not in authority either.

I like how everyone in that room who had an issue with the Lannisters taking control all defected to Daenerys in their own way eventually. Barriston by being kicked out of the kings guard, the hound by running from battle and going off on his own for a while and Varys by biding his time until breaking Tyrion out of jail. That type of dishonorable behavior by the Lannisters bit them in the butt.

From a certain fanfiction: “Let me see that letter Ser Barristan.” Cersei said, gracefully walking down from the throne. “Protector of the Realm.” She said mockingly. “Is this meant to be your shield Lord Stark.” She tore up the paper. “A piece of paper.” “Those were the Kings words.” Ser Barristan said. “Not to worry Ser Barristan.” He said. “The king was wise enough to make several copies.” Well, he had been wise enough to have Varys forge some. Cersei glared at him, the intensity of her stare bore through his very soul. “Bend the knee Lord Stark.” Cersei said. “Pledge loyalty to my son.” “Make no mistake my queen, your son has my loyalty.” He said, he noticed Joffrey relax somewhat upon his throne. “But I must honour his fathers wishes. He will be crowned when he comes of age, he can accept our oaths of fealty then.” Joffrey was looking to his mother unsure how to handle. Cersei herself looked rather unsure how to proceed. She could not order him arrested, he was simply adhering to his dead kings last wishes. And the kings word was law, even after death. “Very well.” Cersei said finally. “How shall this proceed?” “Myself and the counsel with govern the realm.” He said. “But His Grace will of course have a seat on said council, and will be informed of all relevant intel. It will be my responsibility to prepare his Grace for the crown, and the burdens it brings. We can discuss specifics later, in a more private setting. But rest assured, as his mother you will not be cut out.” Cersei continued to glare at him but said nothing, he would take that as a win. “But I will be king?” Joffrey asked. “Yes Your Grace, once you come of age.” He said.

If Slynt had already been paid to betray Ned, wouldn't the smartest move have been not to do so? He could've taken the money from both sides, then helped the Starks anyway. At least he knew Ned was a man of his word, so he wouldn't end up getting turned on as well, like he did with the Lannisters. Aegon Targaryen the Conquerer He was granted Harrenhal for like a week, never even got to leave the watch before the Lannisters turned on him and sent him to the Wall for being a sniveling shit, which he was. I'm saying that, if he was paid to betray Ned ahead of time, AND payed by Ned to turn on Cersei ahead of time, the smartest thing to do would have been to doublecross on Cersei, because Ned would've been much less likely to turn on him afterwards. But since Slynt was an idiot who thought he couldn't be touched by anyone, he just went with Cersei, cause she was totally his best friend and wouldn't let anything happen to him. Ned and Cersei both promised him the same money, both through Littlefinger. It's possible Cersei offered more money, but even so, her promise of money is much less secure than Ned's, which even Slynt should have known

The support of the North and Riverlands may have made Stannis less reliant on Melisandre as well. Renly and Balon Greyjoy may have tried something, Greyjoy in particular, but this is still a more manageable situation than canon. Ned at least would have kept Theon close. Sending the heads of Tywin and the Mountain to Dorne may help smooth things over there at least for a while. Install Lancel as a weak, easily pliable lord of Casterly Rock and marry him to a northern girl, and much of the situation in Westeros is remedied except for up north and of course the Dany issue.

It doesn't make sense to me. Joffery wasn't officially crowned King exactly yet. Therefore, the Kingsguard are technically required by oath to obey the Hand of the King, especially due to that letter of the King's last words. If they had any loyalty or respect for their oath, they would have protected Eddard. Ser Barristan knew all of this was bullshit. And he even showed up at Ned's execution in the books.
@Kahn47 жыл бұрын
Ned was named lord Regent not king. A regent serves as ruler in the service of the king who is either too young or too ill to rule. It does not give them the right to do whatever they want and to say the hier to the throne has no claim is a treasonous statement without any evidence( which Ned had none). As far as Sir Berristan knew Ned lost his mind and was trying a coup to take power away from the King( now Joffrey) and that is treason technically.

@@Lite727 Not necessarily. In the words of Tywin Lannister: “do you think a crown gives you power?” Coronations are merely ceremonial. It’s not like the moment you get a crown you’re suddenly the king. If Joffrey was not a bastard then he still would’ve been the rightful king the moment Robert died. And since the vast majority of people didn’t know Joffrey was a bastard, then he did indeed seem like the rightful king and was treated as such. But if you’re talking in the general sense since he is indeed a bastard, then yea he isn’t the rightful king, but again, in the words of Varys, “power resides where men believe it resides.” So even as a bastard, he’s still the king because everyone said he is.
