The title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor was one of Callas's great triumphs. This broadcast recording from December 1956 beautifully captures the Greek soprano's mid-career voice and interpretation of the Fountain Scene, beginning with Lucia's aria and ending with the Act 1 love duet. Suffering from a cold, she sings cautiously but expressively. She is joined first by Thelma Votipka as Alisa and then Giuseppe Campora as Sir Edgardo di Ravenswood.
As mentioned above, I highly recommend the original unedited transfer of the broadcast, which can be purchased at DivinaRecords.com. I have re-equalized and stereoized their transfer to bring the most life and dimension out of the record, and I am personally very pleased with the results. Please enjoy!
