Beautiful. I have been a Callas fan all my life. Love Traviata and especially her 1955 live rendition of Amami Alfredo... Che fai? But I also love her Tosca, Turandot, Norma Butterfly (Cio-Cio-san)... Callas lives forever ❤

Yes, I am have always been a die -hard Callas admirer but for me, this recording of all (studio and and live - and I’ve heard them ALL), shows what an inimitable singing actress and SINGER above all Maria Callas WAS and IS -- because we still have so many of her recordings to appreciate and admire. That is, to those who understand and appreciate what opera IS: Sung Drama. If you wish to denigrate Callas for vocal “insecurities “, “flaws”...I wish you the ability to appreciate what she brought to and WAS to OPERA. You want beautiful singing: listen to her....you want pablum? Listen to others (I won’t denigrate Sutherland, all the other bel canto divas - no point - they can all be superb.). However, when you truly listen and compare MC to others please note how much she respects the composer’s notation and adds her own inimitable personal voice and passion to the MUSIC. No one, i repeat no one in my opinion, has ever scaled the challenging and rewarding heights of Medea, NORMA, Tosca and Violetta....The Verdi heroines (listen if you will to her 1955 recording of Rigoletto, Leonora in TROVATORE ‘56). I may be preaching “to the choir” but also the famed live 1955 Berlin LUCIA with Von Karajan at the helm exemplify what a supreme artist she was. It’s all there for anyone who will listen....Do you like to read? Check out John Ardoin’s “THE CALLAS LEGACY” which has been published more than once to review every “scrap” of recordable materials both in studio and live of La Divina. Fascinating and insightful reading even if you choose not to listen!!

I've known and loved the Lisbon Traviata for quite some time, but most of these terrific pictures are new to me! Very good sound quality also. Any idea who the man at 18:04 is?

Speaking of his daughter, Germont sings, "Pura siccome un angelo" He does not say angela even though he is referring to a woman. That is because, in Italian, all celestial beings are...male !
@Homoclassicus2 жыл бұрын
Isn't it because in Italian genderless or gender-neutral animate nouns tend to be referred to in the masculine gender? That is how it works in Portuguese: the masculine gender doesn't necessarily nor always refer to male beings, but also to generic or genderless beings when the specific gender doesn't matter or isn't known

Sereni is a wonderful singer, but not one who could sing next to a Callas. Bastianini was the the only one who could, and who's natural harshness of voice matched Verdi's genial and cruel characterization of Giorgio Germont.
@Orfeus802 жыл бұрын
Actually Bastianini was the opposite of Callas. Gobbi and Sereni here were closer to Callas as a singer.
