I always took that more as not using God to justify your actions or words. Meaning, don't, in your vanity, presume you're doing what God wants. An example would be a country waging a war, and people saying they're doing it in Gods name.

One of my kids got in trouble for swearing and asked when it was appropriate. My answer was, if you're hurt, it's going to happen. If a joke requires it to be funny, fine. And if you're fishing, it's required.
