I love sunset shimmer smm and you did her so well, like usually the problem with most sunset shimmer redesigns, they’re nice, but they barely actually show her personality and story through her design, some people just make her look like a fashion model to the point where you’d have to say it’s a redesign for people to know it’s not just an original character, like I can look at that and already know it’s sunset shimmer because it actually looks like her and matches her personality. Edit: I just checked.. THEY STILL CHANGED RARITY’S SKIN TONE TO BE LIGHTER..

When I learned more about Sunset I thought it would make more sense if there were two of her from the first film, think about it, pony Sunset couldn't just get a house and enroll in a school that easily, but if she met up with human Sunset it would be simpler, she could ask for her help and stay at her house and even switch places from time to time at school, and yes, that could affect the character progression but it would be enough to make human Sunset be the one we see most in the first film and the one we follow and see the same trajectory of redemption as the original story, while pony Sunset would return to Equestria and work on reintegrating, she could even show up again and the two could talk and see the progress they've made.

or - hear me out - the human sunset shimmer has been locked up for domestic terrorism (only, cool lesbian terrorism - like rizzing the first lady), which allowed for the pony sunset to take her place. in her efforts to stop sunset, twilight tracks down the human version and they work together; twilight on the frontlines and sunset using her brains and insight from behind bars (meanwhile she rizzes twilight), slowly deepening their bond throughout the movie. upon hearing about pony sunset's havoc increasing, she begins to tunnel her way to freedom to save her girlfriend. hijinks ensues in the final fight and human sunset does something brave or self-sacrificing to prove once and for all that sunset shimmer is innately good and capable of growth deep down, and twilight is able to defeat the pony sunset. believing pony sunset to be capable of that same self-reflection and change, twilight leaves her in the care of her new, terrifyingly-proportioned friends and then carries the human sunset back through the portal with her to the pony world where she can rebuild her life without her extensive criminal record and lack of human connections looming over her head. sunset slowly settles into her new life in the pony world and her and twilight usurp celestia and luna's thrones - taking over as the new ponies of the sun and moon... just gay

Ooh, that reminds me of Pinkie Pie. I don't think it was shown that she switched places with other versions of herself but it would explain why she knows so much. Idk, I mostly think this because of the episode where Pinkie Pie cloned herself 😅 Ofc, if pony Sunset does something like that, she'd actually meet up with human Sunset and make sure that they both know the exact same information. (Kind of how identical twins sometimes switch places but more organized?)

I think she would be more comfortable with the idea of dating Twilight tho. She just always seemed comfortable with herself compared to Twilight. (Basically Yang & Blake from RWBY except Yang was scared of being vulnerable and Blake was deep down a romantic)

I mean based on how she acted you'd assume that she mentally regressed to what she was like as a teenager but that still doesn't make sense (she'd have MORE reason to be more reserved despite being around people)

The design is a little hard to read tho, maybe cause the face, hair, jacket, and background elements all have similar values. The colors work fine on the super cartoony style but in this style it might be better to change some colors around

Sunset Shimmer is one of my favorite character in fiction, you did an incredible analysis on a more mature Shimmer targeted toward 16 year olds or young adults. If G4 ever got a more mature reboot, you should get hired by Hasbro. I'm working on a fimfiction where Sunset Shimmer won at the end of Equestria girls and got everything she wanted. I am exploring a Shimmer who is depressed and regretful of her actions after she destroyed Twilight and Equestria. I had a multiverse concept for Principal Cinch unleashing the magic instead of Twilight; Cinch ends up getting powerful to the point where she invades Equestria and takes Grogar's bewitching bell. This version of Sunset Shimmer teams up with other alternate villains to prevent Cinch from getting more powerful. Principal Cinch was another wasted character, they never explored her control freak angle.

i looove the story you came up for her!!! personally ive headcannoned that when she got in the human world, sunset was so mentally unstable after losing everything she actually killed her counterpart out of panic lmao - but it's just a personal thing bc i love tragic characters - and that way she would be like, forever haunted by her own reflexion wich is....very grim! But well, thats kind of the point; also her constant fear of being "actually still a bad person/she can't change the things she did" would run a looot deeper than paranoia, with this foul thing she did never to be atoned by anyone (because no one has any idea) and at the same time never to be forgotten, being this constant reminder of the lenghts she could go - again - out of despair.

I feel like sunsets hair changes when In Pony form is mostly because of how hair grows on horses and well, unlike G5, G4 actually still cared about making the ponies look like ponies Also, about the question of the other sunset, I subscribe to the theory I’ve heard, that the other sunset simply doesn’t exist because sunsets destiny was to bring magic to the human world and like kinda tie the human world and equestria together If I remember correctly, the theory mostly comes from her cutie mark, seeing how it looks a little like the yin Yang symbol (I think there was more but I don’t remember the theory that well)

Personally I can semi-understand lightening sunset's colours in her mane particularly in human form. Her hair is just so goddamn bright like ketchup and mustard, it's all I can think of. Or heck, Ariel because of the general hair silhouette and the bright firetruck red. Personally I do prefer pastels and the versions where sunset's hair are less saturated look better to me. They don't blind me with their radioactive condiment brightness. I would just de-saturate her colors lighter or darker if I drew her (no issue if you like it different everyone has their own opinions). Or maybe even make her hair more orangey. But I do find the lightening dark coats weird.

i love this rewrite and look, it doesnt stray far from the original but still makes it more interesting with just a few tweaks. although one small discrepancy is that sunset isnt actually athletic, rather the opposite. in a short she was shown to be panting out of breath while THE twilight managed to outrun her when they were both jogging

About the lighter skin tones, Hasbro did that for basically every single character, but it's more noticeable on characters like Luna and Big Mac where there's a drastic change in their skin tones. Miss Cheeralee (I think that's how it's spelled) and Silver Spoon have noticeable changes in their skin tones, too, as their mane color and coat color just swapped places on their human counterparts. I've found it strange why they did that and I'm not sure why they didn't just use their regular colors because it would better mirror our world (ish) because in real life, not every single person you meet has light skin and having the EQG characters have the same color skin as their coats males that feel more natural and more definitive on who's who, in my opinion at least

The wolf cut has gone by many names and was actually just a super common way of cutting your own hair that people taught me in Mexico where you just put all of your hair in a ponytail on the front of your head and pull it down and cut it the length your want your bangs. There are some more complex ways of doing it where you do 2 ponytails and stuff, but that's the simplest and the one I was taught back in 2013-15 and it's definitely been around longer than that too.

Sunset is given a center part as a human, sure, but the real kicker is how is Starlight's hairline as a pony ACTUALLY a side part?? Despite Sunset and Rarity having similar "side parted" manes, they are still centered on their heads and allign with their horns. If you look at Starlight Glimmer, her part actually goes around to the side of her horn - for some odd reason.

13:45 human twilight in the movies was from another school before transferring to the school sunset and the others are in. It’s possible her human counterpart is in another school in the human world. It’s possible her human doppelgänger is an athlete in another school which is why Sunset never sees her human counterpart. Something like that or she’s a biker who travels the world and is homeschooled which could be why you never see her in canterlot high. Also I know about the movies due to watching them with my younger sister back when I was a tween or young kid.

My own personal head cannon of why there is no human sunset is because she died, but not because sunset killed her but she died in pursuit of knowledge/magic. In my head cannon human sunset is considerably older than the human main six and she goes to the same school sci-twi went to in her teenage years, and like sci-twi she is also researching magic but in her research she might have discovered something dangerous leading to her death, so she died as a teen, and that's why when sunset went trough the portal she is a teen cause thecnically human sunset never aged. I got this head cannon from the song where sci-twi's teacher is pressuring her to release the magic and the teacher mention that she has a student that's just like sci-twi but they dissapeard
