I think LA LA Land actually has a happy ending. Because to me, this move wasn't about love or relationships, it was about two people who was obsessed with there dreams, and at the end they achieved it. So... happy ending I guess
@BenEleven11272 ай бұрын
Yeah I could see that. I feel like you're right in that it is somewhat happy, but I also think it's more bittersweet since the two people also had to sacrifice the SO of their dreams in order to achieve their goals and aspirations. You're not wrong though I could see a case being made for both sides

It’s funny you used La La land as a reference point for this kind of thought process cuz I never saw it as that sad, but I guess your mom and I find different things sad lol. Nah but seriously, I’m glad you got this all out in a video because I have the exact same perspective. I’ve grown to appreciate any film that does indeed challenge and helps me not only learn something new about filmmaking but myself as well to an extent. But I also know not to hold the same exact views of art to literally everybody else and instead learn why others feel differently about something. Thank you for expressing this!

I'm so glad you got something out of the vid! Lol that is interesting considering it's definitely not just my mom who has told me those specific thoughts, but yeah I'm glad you agree with the sentiment. La La Land is my favorite movie, and this video points out the argument I've heard far too many times. While I have heard the argument of "bad movie cause it's sad" for various movies, I've heard the argument of "bad movie because the characters act like assholes" wayy more often. That argument is a bit more tricky to argue against because sometimes that kind of character is the main character, and the whole film can revolve around their behavior. Then again, the director is most likely doing that kind of thing intentionally, and so thats the whole point maybe?
@BenEleven11272 ай бұрын
Ohhhh yeahh I've heard that argument too, yeah I've heard people call things like Scott Pilgrim bad cause they hate Scott That is interesting though I feel you in that it's hard to argue against, I usually try to be respectful and just say "nope ur dumb and stupid" cause that's a pretty level headed way to respond of course

Happy endings can really undermine what could be amazingly great: Pretty Woman, Scott Pilgrim. Sad endings can make great films epic: Casa Blanca, The Godfather, II.

I just got recommended this video, and I just wanted to say that it was very well done! I really think you have something here and if you keep at it, I could totally see it growing into something big. [Spoilers for La La Land] La La Land is one of my favourite films of all time, and I particularly love the ending for pushing past what you would traditionally expect from a movie like this. To me, the point of the film was never really a romance story between Mia and Sebastian, but rather a look into how two people can affect each other when they come into each other’s lives at the right time; and I think them not being together actually amplifies that theme. Both my brother and my mom share the same opinion your mom did: that the films ending was too sad. I always thought that, while that is a valid reason as to why they might not have enjoyed it, it is not really a fair criticism for the film in a more objective viewpoint. I think you put my exact reasoning into words perfectly in this video, and the differences when it comes to how people consume media. Anyway, I just wanted to say that you killed it on the video, and I think the channel has a bright future. Keep up the work!
@mattymcfabb2 ай бұрын
A fine video. Can’t wait to see this channel continue to grow. I have felt this same frustration when people simply say a challenging movie is just plain bad. It’s so reductive to the art of storytelling. You could just as easily say “its not for me”
@BenEleven11272 ай бұрын
Thank you for the kind words, yeah I feel you I think that it is a little reductive to call something bad just because it makes you feel negative emotions, but at the same time some people just aren't very media literate so they might just not know what else to say
@baguettegott34092 ай бұрын
Agreed. I enjoy sad movies, but I am an avid avoider of all... upsetting movies. Which is my personal category for movies with extreme violence and torture etc that make me feel much worse after having watched them and prevent me from sleeping. Those are well and truly not for me, not in any capacity, but I can recognize that this doesn't make them all bad films (at least not necessarily), and that some people enjoy them. People who aren't sociopaths I mean, regular people with a different taste in movies and different sensitivity to me. (I do get frustrated when people don't respect that this is not for me and view it as a flaw I have to overcome. No I'm never gonna watch Game of Thrones with you, I know it's very good but I also know that it's not for me, so leave me alone with this stuff.)
@mattymcfabb2 ай бұрын
@@baguettegott3409 such a good point. It can definitely go the other way. I hope in the future people can understand that when you say it’s not for you that it’s not some sort of indictment of the movie/show but just your preference. My girl and i have very different watching habits but never take it as an insult when we aren’t interested in each others favorite movies all the time.

Personal Anecdote about what brought me to click this video: I'm planning on watching La La Land with my mom since we recently visited Le Caveau de la Huchette, which was featured in the film. One of my mom's favorite shows is "The French Village," which documents the lives of people in a French village (shocker) during WW2. She can't rewatch it. It was too depressing. But she thought it was amazing. Amazing *because* of how sad it was, and how real and gritty. Obviously La La Land isn't as dark as a WW2 TV show inspired by true events, but it does have this melancholic feeling that leaves you a little... empty. So I hope she'll like it, lol. This video was entertaining! I love the editing and your displayed personality is enjoyable. I love constructive arguments--debating is a love language. My uncle and I will debate about TV shows for fun, and it's a blast! So glad the sort of mindset of discussions like that isn't too unique, lol. You earned a new subscriber!

I think the hate that Mockingjay gets (both the book and the movies) falls directly into this category. Many people disliked Mockingjay because of how many major character deaths there were and how bleak the overall ending was. They wanted something happier and they expected it to, and when that didn’t happen, they didn’t like that, and showed that through saying stuff like that this was a terrible ending to the trilogy or (spoilers) Finnick shouldn’t have died because it was unnecessary and didn’t affect the overall plot. Meanwhile, the point of Mockingjay is about war, its consequences, how death doesn’t discriminate and the forever lingering effects of trauma. I am also saying this as a former Mockingjay hater, and as I have come to understand the book more over the years, I have seen how this was the the best route for the story to take, as it was the most realistic, and it makes me appreciate it now and understand that sad does not equal bad.
@BenEleven11272 ай бұрын
That's fascinating, I can't say I've really dipped a toe or even a single appendage into the hunger games discourse all that much but from what I remember about the last two movies that makes a lot of sense. Was the hate for the final movies greater than the hate for the book finally? Or were they about the same?
@BookLover-bj5fx2 ай бұрын
@@BenEleven1127 Based on what I have seen online (as I wasn’t a Hunger Games fan when the books and movies were originally coming out) I think the hate for the book is stronger than the hate for the last two movies in terms of how sad the ending is. I think this is largely due to the fact that the Mockingjay movies toned down on the darker stuff in order to keep the PG-13 rating, so the themes come across more in the book, which makes the overall story more depressing. In fact, when you compare the two, the Mockingjay movies are significantly less depressing than the book because of how much they toned down on the violence and Katniss’ trauma and its effects. Even though people did criticize the last movie for toning down the book’s dark parts (as some people had lightened up on the ending since the book was released) this made the hate for the movie in terms of how sad it is lesser than the book, especially since there were a lot of people watching the movies who hadn’t read the books. The sadness still came across well enough that it did get those complaints, but compared to other criticisms of the Mockingjay movies, they were more minor. And granted, people have lightened up more about the ending over the years since it’s been well over ten years since the book came out and we’ve had more time to reflect on it, but you can still find a bunch of people online who still say that Mockingjay is a bad ending mostly due to how sad and different from the previous two books it is (although there are some more valid critiques in there as well, but they are a lot less prevalent in how people remember Mockingjay). P.S. Great video 👍
