I ran my first EZD6 game lately, the party were part of a fleet of ships getting sucked down a giant whirlpool into the mythic underworld, and the devout character prayed to have a ship full of innocent civilians remain above ground. They anointed their own ship with oil and burned incense and offered their ship as the sacrifice to reroll the miracle dice. I set the resistance at 5D6 and they didn’t make it, but it really sold me on how creative and interesting and captivating the miracles system can be!

I really like how this system keeps magic and miracles special. The gunslinger analogy is a great way to explain the problem in settings with clerics throwing miracles around like they're candy :)

This brought to mind two things that John Wick mentioned. First, in his book, Play Dirty, John mentions at one point that faith should come into play based on how faithful the priest is being. If they’re being faithful, they get their full dice, while if they aren’t or the thing they’re doing is against their god, they get fewer dice, or even roll a lower die, like a d4 instead of a d6. Second is the concept of narrative control. This is a mechanic he uses in his later games a lot. When the player rolls the dice, they’re not rolling pass/fail, they’re rolling who gets to narrate the scene, with tiers based on how well they roll. The tiers are: Player gets full narrative control Player gets narrative control, but the GM gets to change or add something (“yes but,” “yes, and”) GM gets control, but the player gets to change or add something GM gets full control. The one rule with narrative control is that if the player or GM get to add something or change something, neither side can be contrary. They have to accept what is happening, but things won’t be as smooth as expected.

i can’t overstate how much i love your game. it’s the perfect mix of crunch, rules light, encourages role playing, runs fast… it’s just perfect. my other favourite book is icrpg so i hope you guys keep pumping out the material ha ha, thanks for the system (now i just need a group to play it with)

Scotty, absolutely love how you deal with miracles. It reminds me of a similar way of how they are used in the Hollow Earth Expedition game. It might be worth it to you or some to read additional rules in this product as inspiration for how to handle them. See below for an example. Game - Hollow Earth Expedition System - Ubiquity Product - Hollow Earth Expedition: Miracle Stone of The Amazon Topic - Miracles Page - 29 The powers of the divine may be limitless, but each mortal may expect only a small amount of holy favor at any given time. Because miracles are granted by an intelligent power with a universal perspective and an often-unfathomable agenda, the Gamemaster is entitled to withhold or alter the effects of any miracle at any time. For example, the characters pray for swift rescue from a tropical island but are first meant to discover and put to rights an injustice taking place on the opposite side of that island, they may instead find their prayers rewarded by a cache of supplies.

Every time I hear resurrection in D&D, I think Re-Animator or Pet Cemetery; something that is not a good idea.

If the highest roll is a '1' that is always a failure that can not be modified by karma but can be rerolled with a hero die.

Unlike boon rolls a '1' rolled in a magick roll always fails the spell unless rerolled with a hero die or eaten as spellburn.

A '1' could count in boons if all dice rolled are a '1'. Unlikely but can happen.

A couple of things occurred to me during this video. You could really play off some holy wars in this game. If an evil friar or other devout character burns down a good church or murders a rival gods followers as a sacrifice, some pretty impressive miracles could come about. A good devout person could convert people or seek out a relic to aid the followers of a certain god as a sacrifice. This could play back and forth sacrifice wise as the good guy sacrifices his time and resources in service of the deity and the bad guy could reap souls or whatever for his deity. Also, you say that intelligent undead are not affected by turning. I find this a bit backward. Skeletons and zombies are essentially constructs. They are puppets created by dark magic. I could see dark magic that animates them being negated, but using faith against something with no intelligence seems counter intuitive. Legends and media show how a person of faith can turn away a vampire by holding out a cross and rebuking it. The legends of ghouls started as creatures that were starving to death and became cannibalistic. So in some sense they have intelligence. The Lord of the Rings show us that Wraiths have intelligence and bright light can turn them away. If you think about it, Voldemort from the Harry Potter series was a lich with multiple phylacteries. He would turn away from bright lights and various Patronus.

Just have to equal or beat the highest resistance rolled...called aloofness for miracles as the gods are fickle.

I have a question: Does the player receive karma from a failure spell or miracle? I think not since they can do it at will and can`t use karma to burst them. Thanks in advance!

They do but remember, a player can only receive one karma a round, no matter how many failures they have.

Hey Scotty I love this system so far and I'm excited to bring it to my table. I am wondering if you had any advice on building combat encounters with it. Specifically at what point does a fight become TOO difficult and can potentially kill all of the characters.

I have never been one for combat calculators as they can be wildly off as players are creative beyond any numbers. In my eyes, throwing threats on multiple fronts is the real danger as most Heroes can deal with a single monster (even a powerful one). In any system, It becomes intuitive after some experience. I recommend some lighter encounters first to see the system engine in action then, you can gauge the danger level pretty easily.

i have a question about miracles ...resurrection which is a 6d6 roll ok ok what if you roll 2 sixxs 3 fours and 1 twos do you succeed ???

You only use the highest # rolled vs resistance. So If I rolled at least one 6 in the 6D6 roll the # to equal or beat is 6. If you roll any 1s in the prayer roll then the miracle fails.

I love the unique spin you have for all the classes and the game truly feels like a different game instead of dnd v376. That being said the miracle classes are too unreliable for my taste. One chance per session for each thing which is hard to begin with and roughly the same power as a conjurer but none of the benefits and a chance for instant fail (~30%) is not quite to my groups style of play. I fear this class will see next to no play at my table with my group. How would you make this class seem worth it to players who like effective characters?

Once per scene (encounter), not day. Also, keep in mind 'devout' is an inclination, not a hero path. (so anyone can take it)
