It's not just music. I work in a library. We are judged on how many people walk through our doors, how many hours are used on the computers, how many books are issued each week, how many children finish our summer reading challenge. What we should be focusing on is the enjoyment people are getting from books and how it impacts on their lives, how a child progresses or even how an adult moves forward with their reading. That is more important but can't be measured with the numbers we have to record and the way we are assessed. It is messed up. Obviously the music business is about making money so has to be run like a business but this clearly misses a huge amount of information that is also essential. The music I love doesn't even get featured on mainstream radio. Who is to say that people wouldn't enjoy the music if they were able to hear it without having to hunt for it. All decided by those people more interested in money than the music itself.

I read a great (i.e., awful but important) quote in Rolling Stone magazine 20 years ago (a magazine I normally dislike, my roommate had it). An RCA executive was greeting his new talent scouts. He started by asking what flavor of ice cream everyone like. One said chocolate, anther strawberry, another rocky road, etc. He then said, "So, think of all these flavors when you are scouting. And then go and find vanilla. Because vanilla is the #1 selling kind of ice cream". Sums up a lot of their thinking.

The Black Keys are one of my favorite bands and they really do create really unique and special songs and records together while maintaining a fun and natural sound. Magic Potion is full of amazing energy and guitar riffs and it’s so raw and pure, but even their most recent stuff is still so honest and creative. They really stay true to themselves as artists and musicians and that’s why I love them so much. Dan is also an incredible producer on top of being one of the best songwriters around today. The Black Keys inspired me to form a band 6 years ago with my brother and we’re still going at it while always focusing on the art of songwriting and musicianship and making original music we love. Creating music you love for the sake of creating something that is unique to you and the people you collaborate with and sharing it with the world. That’s what the Black Keys do and it’s what inspires us as musical creators.

As an independent music producer I know it's so hard to get yourself out there. The "competition" isn't other producers/writers, it's the revenue they have and direction the major corporations decide to push. Having bought most back catalogues going back decades they are quite happy to keep the masses listening to older music, unless they can strangle the lifeblood and creativity of anything fresh that comes along and that looks like it might gain a following

Hello hello, being a failed successful musician, (long story) no-one talks much about after the bubble bursts and you need to make a living after music. Glad I didnt end up famous and poor like some others have. You must know people who had a hit or two, dropped by label and then have to get a proper job. I still feel sick inside from the effort it took to get signed and then the failure. A life long dream coming true and your heart breaking when it fails after being 100% certain. - Its like being a 100m sprinter and running 9.5 in training only to always false start in races. - Sorry its a bit serious. Love the channel, you come across sincere and witty.

I really liked that Rogan interview of The Black Keys, I watched it through a couple of times, going in I very much thought I'd find that Dan was the enigmatic voice behind the band, but it became clear quite quickly that this wasn't at all true. It was obvious from Dan's respect and reverence for Patrick that the dynamic within the band differed from the external view. I feel very much that Patrick is Dan's muse in the band and that they appear very much like brothers who have whole heartedly accepted each other for who they are. Very cool dudes indeed 😎😎👍👍

"Fuck that" is the perfect response, The industry is two polar opposites, 1, the record company owns the artist and the art, but they will push your creation to a targeted world audience because it is in their interests, and they could make a shit ton of money while giving you a small percentage and they also retain the option of interfering with your future art to fit whatever trend is most popular. Or. 2, self release and own 100% of the art, where the artist has full creative control, full ownership, and 100% of the royalties, but the downside is small sales, low visibility to target audiences, But when some dudes or dudettes in somewhere like Chile or Seattle are downloading your music with virtually no promotion behind it, it's the best feeling in the world, and then theres the .0039 of a dollar to collect too. KA CHING. It's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma that's locked in a conundrum.

Magic Potion is for sure my favorite Black Keys album . . . although, oddly, I've heard the Black Keys themselves say they were unhappy with it. For my money, it's perfect. The last "core" Black Keys album IMO. Sounds like it was recorded in a garage. Nothing since has had that DIY vibe. I wish they could get back to that, but I also understand why they can't, and I don't begrudge them for that. Glad they are who they are because they are . . . great.

I understand the complaints and the problems, but many of us never even came close to even having to deal with that, we didn't "make it", but there is a line for us all as an artist, so I get it, just not a place very many musicians would find themselves in. At the end of the day we live in a time where many of us can listen to music that we would never have been given to us on the radio. Will take your advice Mr. Hawkins and listen to some black keys, then see if I can find something I have never heard.

Thanks for bringing my attention to this. I saw these guys live with Arctic Monkeys in 2012, and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen. But over the last decade I've been less inspired by their output--it seems like every time Dan Auerbach collaborates with someone the Black Keys start to sound more like that someone, and not for the better. This is a reminder of all of the industry garbage they have to fight just to release anything at all, and I'm now inclined to be a bit more forgiving of them for getting watered down. I hope they self-release a crusher next. I'll be here for it.

MHO. There are artists wanting to live to make and/or perform music on one side. There are entrepreneurs who risks money to make more money on the other side. I don't think bad about either, I've been a free lance and an employee. The problem with the music industry is that they were making money over the logistic, printing CDs and moving them around. Now that that kind of business is irrelevant the industry needs more to survive while artists are slowing returning to the era when musicians had to be active performers, teachers or composers in order to make a living. The era of making money off a recorded performance is slowly getting to an end.

There’s a lot of grassroots bands using the bundle model to try and gain chart positions and then present themselves as being bigger than they actually are. But the proof is in the pudding, and if you get a top 40 album, drop out after 1 week and then only have 30 people showing up to your tour dates, something isn’t working and it won’t result in any longevity to your career. As you say Justin, it becomes this weird totemistic thing that is a million miles away from the creative magic of writing a song and recording it. That is where the focus should be.

I watch Rick Beato and he was saying some of the reasons modern music production is soo awful is A. producers just replace the band with studio guys and keep the singer and B. all the good producers were let go during the housing bubble crash and what we have now is the B team. So when I look at the AWFUL "top 40" today I wonder what use are major labels today outside of advertisement because it certainly isnt music production.
