Ding ding!!! Helped me bring a nice Tom in for my first day mentor hunt in PA. I'm getting better with the mouth call but not able to shoot myself used your soft call and purrs on slate. Son uses seated vest and sat in front between my legs with a big oak supporting me shielding ny movement. Stepped out about 30 yards. I am sure you have helped more people than you know!!!

Just my second year of Turkey hunting, this was a good practical approach of bringing a gobbler in, several times I've experienced the "gone quiet" bird, thanks again, very helpful.

Thank you for this video. You helped me figure out how I screwed up on a gobbler last year. Exact scenario except I kept calling full blast so he stayed just out of gun range. If I had called softly I now think he would have closed the distance. I wish I had found this video back in '18.

@craig56494 жыл бұрын
This will be my 46th season. Here are some tips: Turkeys roost high up and can see and hear you for a long distance, especially if there's not much foliage. If you let them bust you from the roost you have no chance on that particular bird for a few days. Don't call to a turkey on the roost. If you do they will expect you to come to them, If a real turkey doesn't come to them they will spook. Listen for the fly down before calling. Call soft and infrequent. Hens don't yelp as much as you might think, learn to purr, putt and cluck. The hardest part is sitting still for a long time. If there's you have a bird going and he's coming closer don't expect him to appear from the direction you're looking. If he's quiet for a while don't be surprised if he gobbles from behind you. Pattern your shotgun and know it's limits. 30 yards is the perfect time to shoot. The shot pattern at around 30 is wide but still dense with sufficient energy to kill. I missed one last spring at 12 steps. It's easy to miss at close range even for experienced shooters. Dale has sound, practical advice that a lot of other channels aren't sharing because they just want to sell calls. Good luck.

Craig H. Good advice! Especially about the turkey is coming in. They love to circle you they will gobble in front of you right where you expect then 20 mins later you’ll hear him crunching leaves to your 5 o clock. Patience kills turkeys!

I decided this year I needed to start hunting outside my normal. This year is birds. Turkey and ducks. Turkey seems so easy but so hard. Went out for the first time this year and the season is still going so I'm a man on a mission and your videos with my already woodsman skills makes me think it's when not if I'll be successful. This is great tutorial and I give it a try. I harvested three turkeys last year including a 22lb gobbler. One thing, I personally feel like seating this way and being too open is probably not very good idea. Because last Friday I did seat similar way under a wide tree and managed to call in an average maybe 3yo gobbler, the beard was 5..6 inches. There was an open field between me and him. I was watching that turkey in binocular to come out of brush 200yds away from me. He didn't make a sound to reply but was walking slowly making short stops to pick something from the ground on his way. I stopped calling when he was about 150 yds away. I slowly put my binocular down and shotgun up on my knee then freezed up. I wear full camo. There was a mesh mask on my face, gloves, etc. Also there was a bit of old grass at 6 ft in front of me very thin though. The tom has stopped about 70 yds in front of me. Looked carefully then turned leftward and moved same slow pace into the nearest brush. I tried to call it softly, couple of times, but no luck - he is gone. This turkey has clearly busted me. And I will never seat like that again.

Hi Matt. How far did you walk towards turkey bt calling and setting up.
@craig56494 жыл бұрын
It would be helpful to know the elapsed time from the point of locating the bird through to the end when he walks past. I've let them go past (out of range) then moved to a spot that they just traveled through, then changed to a different call. I also believe going silent after a while works on hung up birds. Some valuable lessons here. Thanks.
@charlesscoggins38704 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video! Let's me know I'm on the right track in my thinking. One scenario I've had that really weirds me out is when I'm in the locating phase and a gobbler (usually a jake) comes flying in and lights in a tree within sight range (100yds +). I feel like I'M the one being hunted! Is there anything you can do in that situation other than wait it out? And would the pecking order have anything to do with that behavior? Maybe he's looking to avoid a butt kicking from a big Tom? I know that's no guarantee there IS a big Tom in the area, only that he's scoping it out. It's happened to me twice and I came up empty both times.

Great Turkey hunter, but one question, why do we see people hunting more and more with no face mask or gloves on? That was really a No No thirty years ago. Just sayin’.
@daleoutdoors175 жыл бұрын
My mask this particular day was in the truck and we took another vehicle to the place we hunted so I Left it by accident. But I also have killed a lot with no mask.. It helps but it's not a must to kill turkeys. Just set still and don't move. It worked before facemask it will still work today
