There's a lot of pressure with both families staring at you and the financial investment made into weddings. This is from a show about Romani culture, and I'm pretty certain the family pays more money on the wedding, traditionally, than they would on a house downpayment. Imagine the pressure of knowing that if you walk out of the ceremony, your mother is going to murder and disown you for wasting her life's savings. Romani culture also is really specific in their customs. Engagements are like a whole family affair (pun intended).
