Hey Kevin, I grew up in the houston area and was there during Hurricane Harvey. I can confirm that Joel Osteen did not offer shelter to anyone despite his church being such a large holy place perfectly capable of doing so. But you know who did offer up shelter and meals for free? Mattress Mack. A 72 year old veteran who owns a mattress store in Houston. Practically everyone in Texas knows him. His kindness knows no bounds, and he gave all he could to help those in need- something Mr. Osteen didn’t do half of despite his enormous wealth.

It is a bit heavy handed on the subject but it gets the point across that it is an infantile way of approaching theology. Also maybe read it yourself 😉 it's actually quite good. I believe you can also find what remains of Celsums argument online though it is incomplete and much of it was lost to history.

There's actually a reason for this. Contemporary music can emotionally prime an audience so they are more susceptible to influences. This only escalates when crowd starts doing something in unison or sharing deeply personal testimonies with strangers Every year at church camp I've dealt with this. The entire week of sermons, music, guilt 3x a day lead up to an emotional last day bonfire sermon. Emotional guilt could've been anything, one pastor I knew said his youth group had a "burn pile" for things that kept them away from God. People would start by sharing testimonies, people would be crying before the actual sermon started because of sharing deeply traumatic things that led them to Christ. One time there was an alter call at the sermon so you just had a whole bunch of teens bowing in front of this bonfire. I always thought that if some guy was lost in the woods and saw us they'd run away lol

My grandma got pulled into one of these “churches” that heal you with the spirit. They had her thinking she could go off her meds and that she didn’t need to go to a doctor. She’s had polio, two botched back surgeries, cartilage degeneration in her shoulders and knees which leave her in a wheelchair most days because of the pain to walk. I was ready to take some people out when she finally started listening to us and got back on her meds and seeing her doctors. I've met pastors and preachers of both extremes. One man I knew was a very frugal but poor man who preached to a small church. He got a severe disease and was even mostly wheelchair bound. He still drug himself out of bed to go and read the Bible to his small church. Up until the day he passed. On the other hand I've met pompous blowhards who spout nonsense that makes it understandable why some people come to hate the faith. On a similar note I've asked questions about religion on public platforms before. Some people attack you and some people politely answer the question. The religion at its core isn't as bad as the mainstream tries to portray it but there are bad actors that give it a bad name around many corners.

They claim that God gave them all the money they have then promise people in their crowds that they could be rich too if they contribute to the church. These models are a major pyramid scheme. This happened about 5 years ago now, I was 19 and had been a member for about 4 years And before anyone comments, I know that not every church denomination is like this. Native Texan here, during hurricane Harvey my mom was separated from our family for three days due to flooding ten feet high over the freeway. I remember watching people stuck, unable to escape the Houston area bc the roads were literally rivers. All while this happened, I saw a picture of the "flooding" happening in Joel Osteen's church on the news. It was a puddle. Edit: All that said, I am a Christian. The church I went to before joining the military was in a converted HEB. The floors were concrete, the chairs were plastic, and the decor was mostly lights hung around the ceiling, walls, and stage. I had the opposite experience as a kid. I grew up nondenominational and went to churches with modern worship bands and light shows and hallelujah praises. But then one summer my parents put me in a summer camp at a Catholic church. I think that the only reason we keep hearing about the wacky side of the USA is because the USA is a well-known country. I grew up with the teachings of these super pastors. Over time, my family as a whole has moved away from them. I'm glad to see that were not the only ones who see the ridiculousness of it all. Fantastic job as always Kevin!

As someone who used to drink the Kool-Aid and who's been to an Evangelical Church, when people have these sorts of reactions one of two things are going on. One, they're just going with the flow because they don't want to appear as though they don't have God's grace. They don't want their faith to be questioned so they just act. Two, they are actually having a religious experience because they believed strongly in the suggestion and they're already wrapped up in the spectacle so they have this intense feeling of faintness whenever he prays over them. It's kind of similar to what happens whenever people get so excited to speak to a celebrity that they pass out.

As someone who has delved deep in evangelical megachurches seeing Kevin make a video about it was an insta-click. Especially as an American it was funny seeing his reaction (even tho the topic is lowkey kinda dark).

I never knew evangelism in USA was like this. As a kid I went to a evangelical church too, but the people there were kind and always willing to help. There was also this one guy with a mental disability and he would bring candy to give to the kids. My church is so different, it’s the polar opposite of what is shown here. Why do people even go to these mega churches? It gives off such a bad vibe and not what a church should be.

Yes mega churches are just hilarious in their absurdity but it's also really sad because of how sleezy the entire thing is. It's very predatory, taking advantage of vulnerable people

My former pastor was a veteran, a volunteer fire fighter and after he "retired" he worked as a school bus driver and now volunteers as an associate pastor at another church, I still find it weird that he retired only to start working again, but I guess some people just can't retire

Some places just have the population to support huge churches, so a church being big isn’t necessarily the red flag, it’s how much they ask for “donations” and how extravagant or expensive the church seems.

I have had exactly one good pastor. Retired military man at a small rural church, him and his wife both incredibly dedicated to God and doing good for others, and not a toxic bone in either of their bodies. He knows ancient history and Hebrew from his schooling and points out better translations and nuance in biblical texts when preaching on them. Honestly the only pastor I've had any respect for because he's the only one I've had be knowledgeable and in the church for the right reasons.

Good on him for being a good person. He's still peddling a lie though, because Christianity (as well as other religions) is based on many lies. There's a reason pastors don't teach what they learn in seminary school, it'd turn people off their cults.
