2 жыл бұрын

This installment of the Call Me Mabie maker documentary series features Sam Raimondi of DIY Huntress.
Sam Raimondi is a full time psychologist with a passion for making and building things in her spare time. As a full blown weekend warrior, Sam's goal is to share fun and attainable woodworking, DIY, how to, and home improvement projects that can be completed with a busy work schedule and on a budget!
"Hi! I’m Sam - full time psychologist and side hustling do it yourselfer from Long Island, NY. I specialize in sharing woodworking projects and home improvement ideas on a strict budget. Did I also mention I have a full time job? Being creative doesn’t have to break the bank or require a lot of time. Trust me, if it did, I wouldn’t be here!
When I was 15, my dad handed me a hammer and told me to help him rebuild a house. Ever since then, I’ve been hooked on making, doing, and creating. As a college student on a strict budget, my goal was to inspire the everyday self to go out and create something out of the box! Each week I continue to update my blog with new and affordable project tutorials, home improvement tips, and business strategies that beginners and experts alike can create and enjoy!
I enjoy sharing free step-by-step ideas with all who are interested in finding new ways to add creative projects to their personal resume! I welcome all and any ideas and suggestions; my aim is to creating, building, and home improvement fun, easy, and affordable for all who wish to participate!
Hey, if I can do it. You most certainly can!" (excerpts from diyhuntress.com)

The process of making, building, creating - once you start to give it your attention, you can let the world melt away for a brief amount of time, being proactive about creating a little win for yourself, a rewarding sense of accomplishment. Sam is definitely onto something!

Justin… I don’t even know if I have the right words to express my gratitude for you and for this video. I don’t think anyone could have done a better job telling my story. I am so honored that you put aside time to come visit me, hang with for a weekend, and share my journey. You’re the best… and I’m so honored to call you my friend. 💓

This glimpse of your life gives us a view we don't normally see. At 70 I take inspiration wherever I see it and people who can manage two jobs and do one of them well enough for a fellow woodworker to take note of their work and sometimes gain an idea from them my hat is off to.

I'm really digging the idea of the psychology practice in the front with the workshop in the back. I'm willing to bet a lot of people could really benefit from doing some kind of craftwork, not just woodworking specifically.

I totally get the therapeutic aspect of woodworking she goes into toward the end. After the hectic pace of a stressful day or week, packed with all the nuance of interactions, give and take, negotiation, and compromise, it's restful to go into the shop and do something _unequivocal._ And that may sound like a strange word to use for a process that usually has many ways to achieve the same desired effect. But there are aspects of it that are unchanging, and uncompromising in a good way. Like, whatever you may _want_ to do with a joint or a structure, there are certain forces that must be accounted for (expansion of wood grain, the weakness of butt-joining end grain, etc.), or else your joint will fail. Unequivocal. Or, the fact that a project is just going to take as long as it takes. Your timetable may be on a faster track, and you might even incorporate all kinds of jigs, time-saving methods, or even the speed of energy, familiarity and experience. But in the end, there's a point beyond which the time to completion is irreducible -- no matter what your thoughts are on the matter. Unequivocal. Or, the fact that the unforeseen is a constant partner in each project. All your experience, planning or desire aside, there are still always going to be those little gremlins, pointing out how this procedure you thought you had down cold, still has this little element of randomness, often with devastating consequences. And it's not a matter of how hard you may try to eliminate this potential chaos, but rather how you roll with it, how skilled you are at adjusting your own actions to it on the fly. Because those gremlins will always be there. Unequivocal. Dealing with those certainties brings a kind of peace. You are a being in a universe that extends beyond the boundaries of your own 'druthers'. You can argue, wheedle, cajole or bargain all you want, and you can try bringing that struggle into the shop with you from your outside existence. But you soon discover it's all for naught. The certainty of the wood instructs you otherwise.
