I haul max gross 63500 every day locally, Both directions always loaded hauling Ore/Backfill for the mines here. I can honestly say I don't miss gears. Maybe the odd day, but can go weeks without missing a shift, and if i really tried I wouldn't miss. Its happens when I rush or don't really give a shit about the companies transmission lol. I probably shift more in a year than some guys do in a lifetime running highway. I run a 2022 T800 with an 18 speed, Run with jakes on all day and catch the gears with the fuel pedal on the way down.

You are included in that as you've just said you might miss a gear the odd time lol. Any good truck driver isn't missing gears on a regular basis, just the odd gear. That's normal.

Wound up with more shoulder problems that hip. As a gal, having to put the seat so far forward, I was almost reaching behind me going into 8th. Finally someone that explained about using the clutch in a way that for me was easy to understand. This was the only part that was kind of confusing to me when shifting a 13 or 18 speed. Now i get it. You were also the first to even mention about pushing the clutch pedal all the way down when at a stop.

In my driving career before retirement I also drove a 13speed splitter transmission in a Mack. It had low and a conventional 6 speed pattern with the splitter on each of the 6. With a good load each gear had to be split. Like your videos Matt, takes me back to those working days here in Australia 🇦🇺

These are few things I had to learn when stepping up into the big trucks from smaller/light semi trucks, that you might touch on with your own advice and technique. Throttle control, not dropping the throttle too much when floating up or down. I drive B double tankers, which fully loaded are 68+ tonnes (150k pounds) GCM. When learning to drive these fully loaded I used to take my foot out of the accelerator far too much, which would cause rough shifts or cause the gear to hold and become difficult to release because the transmission would reload with decelaration forces/weight. I learnt the correct pressure by keeping the jakes on while shifting up, if you let off too much they would activate. Perfect pressure they stay off, the revs will drop and you can float-shift normally. I did this practice in high box, otherwise you could badly miss and potentially have to stop and start over. Gently backing off the throttle when splitting a gear up, letting your foot off the accelerator too quickly/harshly will cause the box to slam the splitter and cause drive train shock loads. Gentle off and gentle on. Missing a gear and half engagements. If you miss a gear, usually from under-revving, don't panic. Hold the gear near the gate (the gear tickle) and quickly and smoothly increase the RPM again and it should pop/suck itself in. On hills you will probably have to go back one or two full gear(s) depending on weight and incline. Half engagements, this happens to me most often going from Low-low to first on take-off, hold the stick firmly in gear and lift off the accelerator gently, it should pop in and you're good to go. Trying to drive it will cause the transmission to violently throw the gear out.

Five positions! If you start in low with a heavy load it will be five positions. When I'm loaded I often start in low. Sometimes I even split low range. I love 18 speed transmissions! And you can even shift going in reverse. The only other truck that can do that is some of the old Mack trucks. Five gears in reverse! I've shifted all the way into 4th gear in reverse. Never hit 5th though. There's not many pro drivers out there that have ever shifted while going backwards. I love my job!

You have 16 speed that has 16 gears + reverse or 16 speed with crawler gears. Crawler is the same as low on your 18 speed but here it is still 16 speed ( crawler is not counted in). Just different names for similar thing. 😉

I'm a UK trucker and this is by far the best explanation of how non-synchro truck transmissions work. European trucks are almost always automated shifters with the ability to shift manually. But even when we were driving stick they were synchro.

I never had any formal training on a 10 speed other than a few test drives with another driver who never explained the clutch braking to me. Don't think he knew that. As a result, i would grind every gear.. and forget about downshifting. I never could get that into a lower gear exiting the freeway .sometimes could get into like 8 and just putt off the exit. This is definitely the best video on shifting 18 speed transmission. You are definitely a master at driving. You video's has help this 57 years old make the decision on getting my CDL. For heavy loads is better to have 18 ,13 or 10 gears? Which is easier on the engine/transmission.

The more gears the better for heavy loads as there is less of a gap between gears. I wouldn’t pull anything over 80’000lbs with a 10 speed. 13 is common for 80’000lbs. For what I’m doing (140’000lbs) it’s possible with a 13 speed but much nicer with the 18 speed.

Ten speed transmissions are for light loads. I have pulled heavy loaded Super B Trailers from the bottom of a hill (bridge construction!) and I wished I had an 18 speed. A 13 speed is OK for most heavy hauls but not climbing steep hills, or pulling a load of logs out of the bush in mud. With an 18 speed you can shift without it bogging on you. Fantastic transmission. You can even shift in reverse! I do that all the time. In soft ground you start the splitter in low. Get rolling and shift it. Saves the clutch big time!

12:00 In neutral and clutch engaged (foot off the clutch pedal ), the transmission input shaft is connected to the engine which allows the engine to control the input shaft speed. (slowing it down/ speeding it up / matching it to the output shaft speed (which is "controlled" by the wheels))

Adams family theme song. Best advice I ever got for a full gear change was to click your fingers the same as the song. Each finger click was the shifter movement. Click to neutral, wait, next finger click push it to the next whole gear..worked like a treat and made floating up through the box a dream. :)

With 100 ton plus , trucks over here live on 1750 - 1500 revs and always flat, 1500 rpm is the perfect rev to go back half a gear and back to 1750 and flat again...im talking triple road train in Oz, always good to rev less if possible but the engines are built for 1750 which is already lower then their capabilities, more when hp and torque start dropping,its not over revving as such, great work mate, cheers

The Big No-No with the clutch brake is to use it with the truck still rolling. It essentially tries to stop the truck, which of course destroys the brake.

Awesome video mate - I failed my first assessment test here in Australia because I was coming down a steep hill to a roundabout pushed the clutch in at 1000rpm but in doing that the truck speed up over the revolutions to synchronise and I couldn’t find the right gear for the revs so 5 seconds out of a gear is an instant fail - but your video addresses this scenario so I’ll do that next time - so thanks for an excellent video - cheers

i've driven Freightliner Cab over trucks with a 4 x 4 double stick. Also a B Model Mack with a 5 x 3. Double stick transmissions are great fun, but are quite rare these days. We called the new 13 speed transmissions, "lazy mans transmissions" but now they have automated manuals. Now that is lazy!

Them Fruitliners in the 1960's were pretty drafty, the top of the door was always flopping out. Petes and KW had nice cabs. I liked 5x4's they seemed to have enough choices to allow any Motor to do the job. The NTC 335 with lots of gear choices was great for climbing mountains. A Guy in Montana had 2 10 speed trans in his KW, now that man had choices.

Hi, in the UK we call it double-declutching. When taking my class 1 Heavy goods I had to double-declutch on every change even though the truck had synchro on all gears.

thank you for this informatively video. in europe we shifting gears a little bit diferent first we have synchromesh gerboxes whos allows us shift with depress clutch once but we cant float gears because synchromesh tension do not allow do float but actually some drivers in order to save synchronizers do double clutching and also for this changin gears is smothier. Other diference is we have max 16speed transmisons and the we can split all gears reverse gear low range gears and high range gears. Spliter not activated until your press the clutch. Despite synchromesh gearbox reverse gear dont have synchromesh so if you try shift reverse you will grinding gear first you need stop gear box from spining so in order to engage reverse youll ned shift any gear and while your are depresed clutch not release the clutch and then shifting in reverse

Ever since I was a kid, the best thing about big rigs, aside from the air horns (!) has been the Jake brakes. I never knew the Jake was on while shifting up to get that sound (my Harley sounds like that when I shift up). I'm amazed you didn't even tap that pickup! BTW, you have the whitest set of choppers! Double Clutch= When double clutching you only push the pedal down a little over half way. It helps with the timing.

One thing about Jake's operating RPMs. From what i know, from Caterpillar's C15 spec sheets, it is actually okay to engage the jake all the way up to the governed engine speed (about 2100 rpm), the jake actually making maximum retarding force the higher the rpm is. But i think most drivers don't do this either if they really care to their motors. 😅

Thank you for the explaining. Love to watch differences between here in Europe and USA. We have different trucks with different strenghts. Each designed for different driving conditions ( different roads, allowed lengts, speeds..). When you love large trucks..you love them all.

I had to gear skip in my old Elantra. Second gear got worn over the years and from having a previous owner. Learning how to go from 1 to 3 was a life saver, though I got tailgated a lot by BMWs and EVs. Learning to downshift was huge too.

Good video there, Rubber Duck! 😆 Man, these new trucks have so much technology and fancy stuff now. I started driving big rigs in 1976. Drove all kinds of junk, 10 speeds, 13 speeds, even twin stick Macks. One thing I don't understand about new drivers, especially younger guys is that they like having their seat down low on the floor, barley seeing over the steering wheel and having to "shuffle steer". I preferred a higher seating position so you can get a good view of the road and everything around you. Seemed like a much safer way to go. Oh, and never would ever considered driving in stocking feet. Good work boots always. If I'm in an emergency situation and have to get out of the truck quickly, I don't want to have to look for something to put on my feet.

About 45 years ago, i went as a passenger across most of Canada in a rig. My memory is a bit hazy, but the driver also had 18 gears, but no splitters - there was a standard 6-speed pattern but three ranges (LMH) so you just cycled through them. He let me drive for a while across Sask.

I think I'm right in saying that most new trucks these days have automatic transmissions (certainly the case here in Europe) but it always amazes me how long manual gears were used in trucks. Its not like auto (or clutchless manual) boxes that could deal with the power and torque didn't exist, agricultural tractors have had auto or semi auto gearboxes since the 80s. Most of the 90s era tractors I have driven have manual range shift with a clutch but are clutchless and flat shift within the range.

thx a lot. as i said in my comment on another video. it reminds me very well of my military days with a 4x4 MAN 630 army truck. it had six gears with gears for off-road at a vmax of 70 kmh (about 43 miles/hour)

Excellent vid. I've driven 10 speeds, but not the 13s or 18s. This made it easier to understand the difference in the respective shift patters; it's not as complicated as I'd imagined.

Eaton Fuller also makes or made a 9 speed that has a pattern similar to a 10 speed. 1-4 in low range and 5-9 in high range.

When you're driving a transport truck, what are you doing with the accelerator? Do you go flat out every gear? Do you wind out every gear (that you use) to redline?

I learned to drive rig with a 70s tractor that had a worthless clutch. If you can match engine to transmission you really don't need a clutch. I got so good at matching the engine to the tranny I didn't even grind hardly at all, really only 1st gear was a problem.

Was a baptism of fire,going from UK trucks to Eaton manual gearboxes...had a Rockwell manual in a Volvo in Nth Dakota, it was slightly easier to use,and a 3sp twin splitter in NZ,that's another kettle of fish!

I first drove a truck at 15. It was a 1930's AEC which had a crash box and a non assisted clutch. My father was a Truckie in the days of vacumm assisted brakes, crash gearboxes, and no horsepower. Also no weight restrictions. If it fitted on the truck, it went on. I travelled with him and most hills were a. Cheerst 3 mph due overloading and hope for the best going down. I learnt by observation, and floating gears was normal. Later in life I did a season hauling wheat for a farmer. I was happily floating gears and one day he decided to come with me. When I stopped for a truck check, he asked me what was that pedal for. I finally realised he was talking about the clutch pedal. He didn't appreciate my answer of reverse and take off. I suggested he makes some enquiries with local transport drivers and contractors. He was shocked to find out, that if you couldn't float gears then you didn't last long. Clutch change out was an expensive item due to truck off the road for the day etc. A good operator wouldn't have to replace the clutch between engine overhauls. My usual run required more than 150 gear changes each way, but the clutch was only used 6 times normally
