Problem is Smith DOESN'T rise to the occasion. He should've annihilated Canelo on size & power difference alone but like Kovalev he played along with the script. Smith lacks the imagination & confidence to truly be great. He's a superb boxer but far too modest to become a superstar. Canelo was stronger than him in the fight and power is useless if you can't land it. Canelo was slipping and rolling most of Smith's shots and breaking him down to the arms/body. Unless he's improved massively since that fight, he can't beat Beterbiev. He has a better chance here than Canelo though, he'll find his power shots easier to land and there won't be as big a speed differential.

Bivol, BJS and GGG (in the 1st & 2nd fight) were the only opponents he's faced in recent years who actually came to win, everyone else was there simply for the paycheck & the privilege of fighting Canelo, Smith included. Both Smith & Kovalev were more than capable of keeping Canelo honest with their jabs alone just like Bivol did. Canelo's a good boxer but not a great one. Kovalev in particular was a very good boxer, coupled with a size & power advantage, even the alcoholic washed-up version of him still should've creamed Canelo if he hadn't already agreed to roll over.

And honestly, I think Kovalev was overcautious (yes, that part is true) but what I don't think he expected that everytime he even threw something with at least moderate power, he will get countered. Past the second half, Kovalev started to throw actual power shots, extend on his jab and even fight dirty, but there was always a counter, I think that Kovalev followed the gameplan too closely because he knew that he was'nt in the best shape and saw that Canelo was just waiting for him to comit with a big power punch

Callum has only lost One Pro fight (to Canelo!) and if he had gone into that one with a touch less respect for his admittedly top tier opponent then he probably would have done A Whole Lot better with that opportunity . . . however, it was still a great learning experience nonetheless and one which Smith has undoubtedly now benefitted from through the implementation of numerous improvements. Attempting to dethrone Beterbiev is arguably an even tougher challenge than fighting Canelo but if Smith catches Beterbiev properly like Callum Johnson did previously then the fight would be quickly over from there because Callum Smith is a Devastating Finisher and does not let opponents off the hook when he has them stunned. I believe it could easily go either way in dramatic fashion though to be fair and promises to deliver a very good contest, it's virtually a 50/50 fight in my opinion and Callum Smith will likely prove to be by far the best and most experienced opponent that Artur Beterbiev has fought to date. It's a great fight for True Boxing Fans and massive credit must go to both these Warriors, huge respect to both men for stepping up and actually embracing such challenges so readily, may the best man win on the night! 👊💯
