The people saying three months is not enough to finish a wedding dress as a way to blame the person who ordered are being ridiculous! It’s up to the seamstress to give an appropriate timeframe! She knew she couldn’t finish it she should've told her!

@marta9854 - It sounds to me like the sister is just upset that she came up with a business idea that was stolen from her by her own family. However, to be fair to the seamstress sister, she obviously put a lot of work into the corset/dress business and built it up on her own without help. Starting a wedding dress business isn't some never before heard of idea. I just wonder if she is still using her sister's designs for the product. I was unclear about that. It sounds to me like this is a case of a new business trying to do too much and it spiraling out of control. $1,500 for a custom wedding dress isn't very much for the work involved, so idk. She was probably trying to build her business too fast and messed up big time.

I’m assuming that it would take knowledge off how different fabrics pull on stitches or how said fabrics drape. I would imagine that just because I’ve put zippers into sweaters I’ve knit doesn’t mean I automatically would be able to put one into the kind of fabric required for a wedding dress. Knitwear is very forgiving in a way that I would imagine that not all fabrics used for wedding dresses are… I would think that the sheer weight of some of those fabrics would require more than beginning-level sewing skills in order to use proper stitching or whatever else would be needed to make sure that the weight of the gown doesn’t compromise the integrity of the stitches and cause a tear.

I have sewn a few bridal gowns and bridesmaid dresses. The very first thing I sew is a muslin mock-up and actual fabric swatches to make sure the color holds to expectations. It gives you proper fit and a way to address changes before cutting into more expensive fabrics. Opinion as a maker. The fact that other orders had to be delayed for her to take a couple of days to deal with it shows her level of disorganized. You have to in ANY business give yourself time to finish a project even if there is a couple days of delay. She did the thing were she agreed to a project that she knew she was too busy to start. That is especially bad for a time sensitive event. If you can finish in 5 days, you tell the client 10. This is how most companies are. Not even makers. In IT, we also at minimum double any estimation is hours or price and let them know there is a possibility it could be delivered sooner.

*cracks knucles* I’m a professional seamster/sewist and used to work in a bridal salon. $1600 is suspiciously cheap for a bespoke dress. Like that’s a moderately priced dress in a normal bridal salon where they can’t make it do your measurements and you need to have it tailored. I don’t believe anyone that says they can make you a bespoke wedding dress for that price. Something is getting compromised. The zipper having a long tail is just laziness. It takes 3 minutes to trim it to the measurement you need and put some sort of stopper on it. The way it’s sewn in is pure sloppiness. Something as nice as a wedding gown needs to have a lining and the zipper would be sewn into the lining so it has a clean finish. Can you sew it to just the outer fabric? Of course. It happens all the time. But the fabric it’s attached to should be finished if you’re going to be giving it to someone else to wear for the love of GOD. Baby hem it. Serge it. Bind it with bias tape. That edge is so raw, Gordon Ramsay is going to yell that he can still see the worms making that silk. The uneven gathering is baffling me. Throw that thang on a dress form and raise it to the client’s height and look to make sure it’s hemmed evenly. This is baby’s first sewing class kind of shit. The offhand comment about the sleeves not fitting is what’s really killing me though. That’s proof positive that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. If you’re going to bill yourself as a professional making bespoke pieces you NEED to know how to make sleeves that fit. I can bet every cent in my bank account that she doesn’t have blocks and slopers in her studio (very basic patterns/garments from which you can work from to make whatever pattern piece you need). I would say go back to school but it’s obvious she hasn’t gone to school in the first place. Go find some adult continuing ed classes at the local community college and start there.

I’m back because this lady’s work has been haunting me for days. I think I cracked the raw edge on the zipper situation. In (proper) corsetry, there is no lining that gets incased into the whole garment (like on a dress for example). All of the raw edges on the inside are covered by the casing for the boning. It sounds like she learned how to make corsets before literally everything else, so it makes sense that she doesn’t know how to handle linings and raw edges. It’s like she learned how to ride a unicycle before a tricycle, and now she’s eating shit trying to ride a bike with training wheels. I’m in awe of how far she’s managed to get.

@@tahlia__nerds_out Thanks for asking! I don't sew much anymore. I don't have a cutting table and always laid everything out on the floor, and getting up and down like that is too painful now. But when I was in the hospital after surgery I got into embroidery and have kept up with that! I do want to get back into cosplay and have been trying to think of ways to make it accessible. I recently got an electric scooter, so I could at least attend conventions now! But I definitely couldn't marathon sew like I used to. A costume would probably take me months. I did try knitting for a while but I tend to get distracted, stop for a while, and lose track of where I was in the pattern. As a couturier, tailor, and dressmaker/alterations specialist absolutely none of this should have happened. The first meeting should ALWAYS involve a contract signed by both parties with deadline and cancellation fees etc all laid out plainly. Having worked on several wedding dresses it takes about 7 months to make one by hand w/ boning and beading/lace. This is such a nightmare scenario but also why you need to ask for references and business license number prior to working on a custom garment.

I once had a Venetian masquerade gown made in 2 weeks. The shirt alone required 10 meters of fabric, it was a black and white gown, with alternating black and white panels in the skirt in satin, a black velvet bodice with fitted black velvet sleeves, with an over pocket sleeve in white satin. The entire gown was embroidered with vines and blossoms, white on black and black on white. The reason it took only 2 weeks to make was because the 2 ladies making it became obsessed. They thought it was the most fun idea ever and they ran with it. I gave them months to complete the gown, but they didn’t want to work on anything else. The skirt was, in my opinion, a nightmare to create, because it was cut on the bias and was made to fit over a massive hoop. To the ladies, it was a fun and exciting puzzle. I only say this because, you can make a wedding gown in 2 months of sufficiently motivated and possess the requisite skills.
