Why? He's doing nothing with his playmanship and everything with showmanship. He's doing absolutely nothing but pressing on a pedal. You can be doing anything with the guitar or even nothing at all and get the exact same sound it had nothing to do with playing. None of his stuff does. It's all stupid simple and it sounds good and sometimes simple is best. In his case that's been almost all the time and it's worked for him simply because of his showmanship or ability to perform. His skill is way over rated by his listeners who either don't play or are new. IDK if you play or not but I promise you can do every single thing Tom can do, and easily. Again that's worked best for the man but still, it doesn't give him any form of skill. Almost like lip syncing for guitar when he popularized that Cry Baby pedal and the Space Station pedal. At those volumes if you take your fingers off the strings the guitar is going to feedback no matter what. That's why I said doing nothing creates the same sound, and you just press the pedal to stretch the notes. He doesn't even have to make sure he presses it to the same point - there's an additional pedal in his array that does key detection and keeps him on point. I've also seen him (sorry for the let down but many of today's "pros" do this) completely program his parts for the set, the band plays on a click track that the drummer controls, and he 100% focuses on showmanship and there is no real playing. I'm not saying he sucks just that with any practice you'd likely be better - no joke at all.

Plenty of people hate on Tom because they can’t perfect his sound. Yeah, it’s easy to make weird sounds with a guitar, but not with the precision and tone he does it with. Honestly one of the greatest guitarists out there. So glad I got to see the first show of possibly their last tour.

I've heard people trash on Tom Morello, saying things like "it's all flash no substance" but I disagree. I think he has a very unique handling of the instrument, and his effects and note choice serve the songs well. He definitely creates a more synth-like or "hip-hop" sound which fits RATMs music.
