All of those moments you guys think are unintentionally hilarious are actually fully intentional. This show is a great mixture of super seriousness and hilarity.

I was going to say just this. David Chase said he was never sure if he was writing a drama or a comedy, and Terry Winter said that he took inspiration from stuff like Laurel and Hardy for the violence lol

Oh man only one season in and she’s up there. The best villains to me are the one you can’t help but empathize with. The humanity/monster duality gives the villain much more depth.

@@americanzombie1802Ok, let's do a hypothetical: let's say before they watched any episode the guys announced they were going to start reacting to The Sopranos. And in the comment section I wrote, "OMG, you're going to love this show. Tony Soprano is one of the greatest protagonists in television history." Are you going to tell me that expressing that opinion about how I feel about a specific character is spoiling it? I revealed absolutely nothing about what they did in the show, and yet that's spoiling it for them? And in the case of Livia, they've already seen season 1. It's pretty evident she's a villain. Then I express my opinion she's a great villain and that's spoiling the show?

I’ve always felt that Junior refusing to admit Tony was the real boss was less because of pride, and more because of loyalty. Junior is extremely old school. He may be pissed that Tony outsmarted him, but he views the oath he took to the mob as absolutely sacred. Ratting is never an option, no matter what. He’s also probably also a little proud of Tony for pulling such a good move lol.

@@janvaneyck5600 I feel like he was being coy. He's prideful but he full well knows Tony is running things, just that he saw a moment to deny it in front of an authority to give him that slight sliver of satisfaction, knowing that the FBI will now think he was the "big willy" and he will get some recognition while also helping Tony.

I noticed two perfectly parallel scenes/shots at the beginning & end of this finale: Tony in a rage, looming over a woman, threatening her life, his face so close to hers they’re practically touching. First, Melfi, when she confronts him with the truth about his mother. Then, Livia, when he confronts HER with the truth. Rewatch that scene in the nursing home. When Tony gets there, he grabs a pillow off a gurney in the hallway as he’s barreling towards her room. He’s planning to smother her with that pillow when they inform him she had a stroke.☠️

Awesome reaction as always guys, I've seen these episodes so many times but watching them again with you is really satisfying because of your commentary and post watch chat which is so good! Many great moments in this episode, Tony found some sense of calm even in all the chaos, if not for the longterm it's fascinating to watch it unfold. After some very tense moments in this episode with Livia, Carmela, his kids and his trusted guys, I always love watching the end of this one where it feels like a genuine family Soprano moment. Always felt bad for Artie but he really comes through here which made me love his character even more! The priest is a really shady dude in the nicest shady way but Carmela calling him out was a great scene.

I think Tony has basically resented his mother for years. Her joylessness, always complaining and never appreciating anything he tried to do for her. Remember earlier in the season when Tony beat up the bartender at the Bing when he said something that reminded him of Livia? But at the same time, he felt guilt and shame for having these feelings and tried to push it away. So I agree with Abe that a part of him is probably relieved. He can finally hate her without feeling bad about it.
@redox.cinema
@redox.cinema Жыл бұрын
All of that bottled up hate feels like it added to his stress. Felt intentional that after this we see Tony at perhaps his calmest and most at peace, having dinner with his family in the middle of a storm.

I feel like the way David Chase wrote this is pure genius, he puts the audience, viscerally, in Livia’s grasp. She doesn’t just gaslight Tony, she gaslights us! I felt sorry for her, I wrote her off as a helpless old lady, when she said horrible things I made excuses for her, like she couldn’t possibly know how damaging or dangerous the things she was saying actually were. Then I’d think “She knows exactly what she’s doing!” then doubt myself and change my mind, then change it back again. If he had written the story, and her character, as straightforward, and you viewed Livia as Dr. Melfi and Carmella do, without any doubts about her intentions, you wouldn’t feel the creeping insidiousness of her poison. Did she smile at Tony? Or was it a stroke expression?
