Probably a good time to mention how good the music in this show is. David Chase personally selected all the music himself, sometimes consulting Steve Van Zandt (Silvio's actor, and a member of Bruce Springsteen's band), and it creates so many iconic moments, with that season 2 opener being among the best. There is such an eclectic range of songs used from all genres and time periods, and every so often the lyrics of the song used can give insight into a particular character or theme.

Tonys not an alcoholic, not even close, we dont even see him drink that much. Carmelas advice wasnt bad, she was telling him to go out, have a beer, relax, & be with his friends and family instead of stewing in anger over Janice. Suggesting he have one beer at a family reunion wasnt wrong, barring therapy what he needs most is to chill out and get some enjoyment from life. I know Carm isnt perfect but she's a smart woman and cares for her family including Tony, & was trying to get him out of his own head.

I appreciate all the deep stuff you guys get into with the story and your theories for the characters' motives, etc. BUT can we just take a second to appreciate the late Mr James Gandolfini's acting. Out of all the major famous fictional crime bosses I can't think of anyone other than Tony Montana that can portray rage so perfectly. You will absolutely see many more sides of Tony other than just rage. James and the rest of the cast put their whole ass souls into this series.. Dare I say I think it is the best acted TV series of all time (to go along with its other GOATs proclamations from fans and critics for various other reasons).

David Chase was/is a big David Lynch fan. The drama/humor mix, the setting of mood/tone, the dream sequences, the occasional sense of dread... none of it to 'Twin Peaks' extremes, maybe, but the influence is definitely there, especially as the seasons progress.

Janice is the older sister to Tony, the one who was with their dad at the carnival in their flashbacks. Barbara is the baby of the family, which she literally is a baby in the flashbacks. You see Livia trying to feed Barb when Tony is having his lil hissy fit about why Janice gets to go out with their dad. Out of all of them, its clear Tony and Janice were affected the most by the dysfunction of their family. Barbara seems the most normal one cos it seems she immediately got the fck outta there the min she was legal age 😂 the smart choice

Ahh season 2, I'd rank this above S1. S1 is great, but it's just a small introduction to what we're going to get into. Season 2 is definietly more complex in terms of story telling and plot lines. In this season’s opener, we see the implication of David Chase’s decision to not use a cliffhanger last year: a cliffhanger dictates that time must “freeze” during the off-season, and then magically resume when the new season begins, but-as we see in the current episode-time has not stood still. I think this is part of the “fucking regularness of life” (said by Chris) that Chase has committed his series to portraying. Nothing in life is more regular than the passage of time-the clock ticks inexorably. What television show has the right to “pause” time while on hiatus? Chase doesn’t hit the pause button, and his strategy certainly adds to the realism of the show. It allows characters to age just as the actors portraying them do. It allows the series to incorporate real-life events which occur between seasons into storylines and conversations very naturally. By not picking up the new season precisely where the old season left off, The Sopranos just feels more believable. The montage early in the hour is able, through its artful craftsmanship, to evoke the sense of time having passed. Its little snippets show characters gaining new interests or reaching milestones or continuing business as usual. Another season-opener convention is continued here: Tony comes out of the house in his bathrobe to pick up his newspaper. David Chase has spoken about the quandary he was in after the first season ended. The major conflict in the initial season was centered around Tony’s troubles with his uncle and mother. Chase needed newer, fresher tensions for the sophomore season. Pussy shares some similarities to Corrado in his relationship to Tony. Both men are part of Tony’s professional life, but they are also a very important part of his personal life. Any betrayal by them would not only devastate Tony professionally, but also personally. I think y'all cut the shot out at the 13:30 scene but we see a clear and obvious shot of the pool cleaner which seems sinister and reptilian when proximate to Janice, seeming to underscore her snake-like persona. At the scene at 16:13 David Chase is using the physical environment to reflect the psychological states Tony. In the scene, as Tony drives, he looks out his passenger window at environments that become progressively more distressed and unhealthy if you go back and look at the scene. I don’t know if the deteriorating environment before Tony has a breakdown is merely a cinematic construct for the viewers benefit. Sometimes people get depressed just by seeing something they associate with some issue they have. The scenery is a reflection of Tony life, this triggers his collapse. Even though Carmela alluded to Tony’s philandering in her very first scene of the Pilot episode, it never developed into a major issue in Season One. A couple of snippets in the montage show Tony’s cheating and its attendant behaviors, and the accompanying “It Was A Very Good Year” is a song about a man who dates different types of women over the course of his life. Our knowledge that it is famously philandering Frank that is singing predisposes us to identify the song’s narrator with philanderer Tony. In direct contrast, the final scene of the hour is all about Carmela’s stoic loyalty. The narrator of the closing song, “Time Is On My Side,” is sure that her cheating lover, given enough time, will return to her. (“You’ll come runnin’ back,” is her repeating refrain.) The decision to use Irma Thomas’ version of the song, rather than the well-known Rolling Stones cover, gives the song a female voice, allowing us to further identify the singing narrator with steadfast Carmela. I always thought that the final scene shows Tony attempting/considering to open up to Carmela, in light of his rejection by Melfi, and failing to do so. The scene is almost awkward, him seeming to want to connect but her being dodgy and insistent on doing something “productive” rather than sit and really be present with Tony. He seems to be waiting for a cue from Carmela, but it never comes. She can tell that he needs something, but does not consider offering anything beyond food. As soon as she sits down, she starts going through the mail while he hesitantly eyes her and eats his pasta in silence. It’s tragic. Small note: In the Pilot episode, Dr. Melfi cited the possibility of passing out behind the wheel as one reason why Tony needed to continue therapy. Here, she is unmoved by news of his accident-she refuses to resume her role as his therapist.

I once heard someone break the seasons down this way thematically (not a spoiler): Season 1: Explores Tony the son and his relationship to his mother and Junior (father figure) Season 2: Tony as a brother to both sisters, as well as Pussy and Richie (introduced in ep. 3) as they were so close growing up. Season 3: Tony the father/father figure Season 4: The husband Season 5: The boss Season 6: The individual I think this is a good way of looking at things honestly, and gives additional perspective when watching the show.

The shift for all the characters in terms of scumbagginess (like Chris putting his hands on his girl) and more. As others said here in the comments the show finally hits its stride in terms of knowing how it truly wants to portray mobsters and crime world fully. This show has some truly diabolical monsters in it and that's another reason why it's held in such a high regard because you still absolutely sympathize with said monsters due to how amazingly written they are. It goes far beyond this guy is bad because he kills people and treats his girlfriend horribly or this dude is bad cause he's a racist and a killer lol.

You guys have Christopher figured out. His low self esteem drives his desire to be seen as “the man!!” Problem is... he’s pretty damn stupid & F’s things up a lot. He’s kinda trapped in this negative circle of wanting a lot of attention but is usually only capable of drawing negative attention from his screw ups.

At 3:31 I’m soooooo glad to have heard you say:“It’s very clearly a drama, but you can definitely find the humour in all the episodes”. This is exactly the point. A lot of people seem to think it’s comedy and drama. It’s not. What they perceive (misguidedly) as comedy is just a reflection on the everyday ‘comedy’ we all experience in our everyday lives. It’s the natural humour we all encounter in our human interactions. In other words, it’s not ‘pushed’ as intentional comedy.
