"Instead of thinking, 'what's wrong with this child', 'how can I help this child." Very powerful sentiment and a great takeaway from this video. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think 3 is too late to start! It might take some time for them to catch on to the idea, but that happens at any age.

Just commenting because a few days ago for the first time ever (I have a 3yo) I gave MYSELF a time out (especially since no one was doing anything wrong I just really needed a short break and my son stopped napping and I have a infant too lol) and I thought I traumatized my son because he was upset, but when I came out he said "you all done relaxing mommy?". I just hope it's a good example to him to show that sometimes mommy's emotions are too high and she needs to step away for a second.

Loved seeing how you are bringing our Time-In ToolKit to life in your home's calming space with your son. For ages 1 to 2 I highly recommend getting started with our children's book introducing emotions called Heart's Treasure Hunt, and our SnuggleBuddies Emotion Plush. Again, we are thrilled to see our play-based social-emotional learning tools and toys featured in your awesome and educational video. xo Suzanne, Founder, Generation Mindful

Hi Kevin Lu, Love love your videos. I have a 10 month old baby boy. I love watching your videos. Very interesting content. Can you do a video on your baby’s food schedule or non subscription books that you read every day. Any recommendations on books and any book favorites currently of alastir? Also any bed time routine you follow ? can you vlog a general day in your life ? just curious to see how you manage a youtube channel with a toddler at home .. kudos to your hard work as a great dad and a great youtuber . I made the sensory bottles following your video , and my baby loves looking at them. Thanks again for the beautiful content.

Thanks for the support! We follow the schedule of the Montessori school he attends so he doesn’t get confused. These are approximate times 7:30 breakfast, 9:30 AM snack, 12 lunch, 3:00 pm snack, 6 dinner. Great idea on the books. We have collected quite a few. Currently my son still likes Dada and Mama both by Jimmy Fallon. Overall he tends to like books with animals or cars. My video that’s being released Tuesday actually touches on my bedtime routine! Spoiler nothing crazy lol. I’m mostly able to have a KZbin channel with a toddler since he goes to school. Used to be part time MWF, but now he’s going fulltime. A vlog on days when he’s home would be fairly hard to juggle. I’m not sure how some parents with KZbin manage it. Pretty much the days revolves around his eating and napping schedule 😅

Do you have any sleep sack preferences and any sleep routine you follow? Thanks
@kevin-lu4 жыл бұрын
My son still doesn't like being covered with a blanket, so I haven't looked into any sleep sacks yet. For night time we don't do anything too special. Our regular nightly routine is - bath, body lotion, get dressed, brush teeth, wipe face, face lotion, let the dogs out, look at the night time sky for the moon and stars to say "good night", head to our room and let him dim the lights (we're holding him up to the light switch) before putting him down to sleep. He does go to a Montessori school and at the school him and his classmates just sleep on a plain mattress/cot on the floor for naps. I've adopted that idea in his room and seems to be working decently for naps. Although sometimes he prefers to nap one of the Nuggets.

Thanks for sharing this, one thing that wasn't clear to me is how do you invite the child or persuade them to go to calming corner? Do you tell them to go when there's an unpleasant behavior beginning to brew or how do you approach it.
@kevin-lu3 жыл бұрын
Initially you’ll need to walk them over and introduce them to the activities. You can let them know that “we’re going to the calming corner to calm down”. For my son I’ve found that if the activities are intriguing enough it’ll help cool him off from being upset. In the beginning it might be tough to tell them to go to the calming corner in their own. It’s best to go with them so it doesn’t feel like a punishment.

we are in the process of creating a calming corner for our 22 month old. I'm wondering how you are letting them know how to get to the corner? are we picking them up and bringing them there? or we suggesting they go there? are we walking over there and hoping they will follow? that's my only question with the corner. thanks! great video. loved the info!
@kevin-lu2 жыл бұрын
We make the corner welcoming so that my son doesn’t mind going even when he’s not upset. It’s less of a suggestion and more of something along the lines of “let’s go to the calming corner and pick an activity”

Thanks Kevin. Question about your video of the tour of the room: I noticed you didn't have a changing station. Where did you move it?
@kevin-lu4 жыл бұрын
The changing station is actually in our room now, but we don't use it too often anymore since we started changing him while standing. We just find a place for him to hold on to near the restroom to change him. Slowly trying to get him potty trained.

Subscribed and liked! Great video and lovely concept! Q: What can they do next time they feel a positive motion like too much excitement to express it instead of say running? Also q2: does this apply for people who work at daycares and have multiple kids at once? I would love to know more about why timeouts done right are not. Good idea in your opinion? Ty (:
@kevin-lu2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! When having positive feeling it’s kind of similar in which you would want to identify the feeling and tell them the name and show them how to express it. After they’ve calmed about then you can talk about how it makes them feel and what they can try doing next time. This might be harder depending on the daycare. I know some daycares do this but of course everyone at the daycare has to be on the same page. My son goes to a Montessori school and they don’t have punishments. They explain and teach them how to express the feelings.

How do you apply the calming corner in a place that isn't your home?
@kevin-lu4 жыл бұрын
Being away from home is a bit harder, but we can make a small little travel bag sized calm down corner to take with us. It doesn't have to be anything big maybe a small ziplock back with things like a small book, stress ball, mini glitter jar, or sketchpad. Another great idea is to look on Google for "calm down cards printables". They're pictures you can print, make into little cards to carry around. The idea is for your child to look through them to find something they can do to calm down. I haven't made it myself yet, but this set seems pretty nice! www.lizs-early-learning-spot.com/anger-management-23-calming-strategy-cards/

This may sound silly, Can a child learn to manipulate the corner to get out of a situation?
@kevin-lu2 жыл бұрын
I would assume that if they’re able to think straight enough to manipulate the corner than they might be calm enough to discuss the situation. Older children might but I don’t see toddlers doing this as the emotions are usually too much for them to think/listen.
