some of them oozing that late 80s, early 90s keyboard demo vibe, FMs, cheapo PCMs or samplers, occasionally taking some patterns and licks from music I'm awfully familiar with. some Towa Tei, Toshiki Kadomatsu, Casiopea, RAH Band, or that damn Japanese 00s fusion band named bird, or something I can't find(who named their band BIRD) 37:35 reminds me of a BGM in Japan Science Television(?)/JST's できるまで program(Japan's How its Made)

you're right! I love the cuica! To be honest, I think a lot of japanese game composers took influence from latin music (particularly koji kondo) around the 90s/2000s and so that influence came to me via japan. However, I do listen to a lot of artists like jobim, ed motta, djavan, hermeto pascoal, gilberto gil, ivan lins etc. these days but initially that sensibility came to me through 90s/2000s game music.
