RE: Solo death scene. You have to remember back in 1964 the Lincoln Continental was arguably the apex car in America...a 1961 version was President Kennedy's parade limousine. That's why the shot of the car just before the crane claws descend and destroy it. The crushing of this car in 1964 had an impact on the screen that much later audiences do not get.

I agree, Goldfinger's plan is the best villain scheme of all Bond movies. It is simple, yet believable and it just sounds so awesome, especially since Goldfinger is just purely delighted by his idea. His delight makes him one of the best villains in a Bond movie. He is evil, but Gert Fröbe portrayed him as a kind of normal man, who just loves his work. All other villains are either menacing or psychopathic or emotionally restrained or unsympathetic. Goldfinger's death or rather his facial expressions when he's sucked out of the plane have always struck me as being comedic faces, as if Gert Fröbe was intentionally looking silly, which is in total contrast to his anger when he appears from behind the curtain.

For a great villain, Goldfinger and his team let Bond off the hook many times. They let Bond live after Jill and Tilly were killed, took Bond off the table moments before the laser arrived, nice enough to bring Bond's luggage so he can shave/freshen up/put on a new suit and really nice enough to let Bond drive his own car after being captured. Seems like KFC and Sunoco had good product placement.

Unlike most of the later Bond movies, the screenplay for Goldfinger far surpassed the actual Fleming novel it was based on. Maibaum and Dehn (just looked it up) deserve massive kudos for their sublime improvements, to make this the no.1 Bond movie. 1) Goldfinger deals swiftly and visibly with the wonderfully portrayed Jill Masterson. No waiting months to learn that she was killed in a tragic spray booth accident as in the book. The movie scene also introduces Oddjob at the outset, establishing Goldfinger as a 'dangerous man'. 2) Goldfinger's car has entire body panels made of gold, giving a great visual in Auric's factory, rather than the hidden armour plating panels being replaced by (hidden) gold sheets in the book ...boring! 3) That book had Goldfinger only blowing the bloody doors off of the Fort Knox vault using a nuclear bomb, after which several gangs of mafia mobsters were supposed to run into the broiling and radioactive ruins to loot the gold. Totally ridiculous! The screenplay's dastardly plan is far more credible and somewhat astonishing, when revealed. 4) The book DOESN'T take us inside of Fort Knox - we ALL want to see the gold inside (ffs!). The film's scheme enables just that, with a wonderful view of a multistorey palace of gold for the finale. How could Fleming have envisaged anything else? 5) Lots of other cool stuff like: Mobster Solo's death: Movie - shot, car-crushed and cubed in a Lincoln continental limousine! Book - reportedly shoved down some stairs by Oddjob >yawn< 6) In the film, Bond is kept alive and captive, to neutralise MI6's interference in the scheme. In the book, he actually works for Goldfinger as his personal secretary. Such a thin plotline! I think the SCREENWRITERS are the real heroes of Goldfinger. The book is one of the lamest of Fleming's Bonds.

Just watched the movie again after not seeing it for a few years, and this is a great Bond flick. Absolutely holds up to this day as a time capsule for that era. I don't understand how people say it's over hyped. It's a smart script. I think the only thing that gets a little fuzzy is Pussy's turning, and swapping the gas cans. I understand that this sequence of events happens all off camera, and is purposely set up this way, but the whole time the audience is like "huh?" Until Felix informs us after the events happen and all suspense is gone. It's like they built up the set up, but dropped the ball on the pay off. My only really issue with the film. I think it could of been written better, perhaps her busting Bond out at night, and they swap the cans without anyone seeing. Could of been a fun spy moment. As I do with most movies I watch, I look up reviews to get other's insights on a particular movie, and just a plethora of different opinions. I found your review, and I just wanted to comment on your format. I'm not sure if you do this in all of your other videos. I've only watched these two. And I do understand it's a bit dated now. Maybe you've changed things up. But still wanted to share feedback. Your thoughts and insights really only came into play at about the 7 min mark of part 2. Part 1 and most of part 2 was you literally giving a watered down spark notes of the film. I think most of the general views that find their way to this particular video have the movie fresh in their head, or perhaps just saw it. Having you go over the movie from start to finish felt off, and no offense rather boring. You could of honestly taking the 7 min mark of part 2, to the end and expanded on key parts of the movie, and giving your thoughts. We as the audience don't really need a play by play summary of the entire movie, if we want that, we will go watch the movie again. Not trying to sound harsh here, I think you have a lot of interesting thoughts, and I actually found your closing points well thought out and interesting to hear. But it took you one video of 15 mins, and another 7 minutes of your second video for you to be done letting us know exactly what the movie was about. Perhaps you were actually reviewing the full video. If that's your stick cool. I personally think you would do much better giving a super brief plot summary of the flick in a minute. And then break down characters, gadgets, villains, Bond, and whatever categories you wanted to touch base on. Maybe even bring up history with the particular flick like you did in this one a bit. It was super interesting. Anyway, thanks for the review, and your closing thoughts. Really enjoyed that bit. Keep up the good work. I'm going on a bond Marathon here this month. I'll most likely check out your other reviews soon. :)
@paulclemens79534 жыл бұрын
Bless you for this delightful review, Calvin! Over the years I've noticed even more mistakes and inconsistencies and illogical stuff than you pointed out here, and yet, like you, I absolutely love this film. In fact, it's my favorite Bond along with 'Casino' and 'Majesty's'. It was also my very first Bond -- which I saw on it's initial release -- and the sheer magic of that experience cast a spell on me which has lasted a lifetime. Like another commenter here, I too was taken in by your Harold Sakata fake-out and wanted to jump through the screen and throttle you! 😄 Best villain scheme, best villain, best car, and one of the most iconic Bond girls (women) -- 'Goldfinger' had it all. The only thing we seem to disagree on is the title song, which I love. But you're hardly alone in finding it's brassiness a bit much. In summation, though 'Goldfinger' remains my favorite cinematic Bond, I acknowledge that 'Casino' and 'Majesty's are probably finer films. And though Connery is "my" Bond, and never better than in this film, I'm also happy to say that, as an actor myself, I think the finest performance of any actor as 007 was Daniel Craig in 'Casino Royale' -- hence his richly deserved BAFTA nod.

Nah Calvin I think you're right about that barn scene. I hadn't seen this one for about 13 years or so and I just got out of a screening of it. It's difficult to not interpret that scene as a coded 'corrective rape'. Connery's cold portrayal also kind of reinforces it. Given how central this movie is in the perception of Bond (good and less so), it makes all of M's talk of Bond as a sexist dinosaur in (I think) Goldeneye make a lot of sense. Also, while I kind of agree with your distaste for the theme, I do think the instrumental motif is used really, really well in the score. That stuff aside though, this one is really, really good.

What makes me think Pussy is the best Bond Woman is the fact that her tough character makes you forget what her name is on top being the first Bond Woman who could take care of herself, if need-be. I always thought that Goldfinger explained his plan then kill them was to show off how sinister and deceptive he can be which is shown throughout the film. And lastly I think this is Connery's best performance as Bond. Best movie, best Bond, best Woman, best villain, and best henchman. Love it.

I'm enjoying all your reviews, but i disagree that the crushing the gangster in the car is a pointless scene! It's the first of one of many important Bond tropes of the series! The villain always has to kill someone (a minor character) in a horrible, novel or weird way (the worst being the dogs set on the girl in Octopussy and the decompression in Licence to Kill) So it's actually as historic in bond terms as the entrance of Q or Bond banging a girl at the end of the film.

Dude. Great review :) I want to make a comment about the scene in the barn. I didn't find anything bad about it at all. The chemistry in the moment. The contest of wills. The subtle energy in the air between them. Bond would *never* rape. He's just got a way with women that they do not want to resist. It is a fantasy of masculinity that few men actually get to experience. I laughed my ass off. Ps. Embarrassing Fact: I just watched Goldfinger for the first time in my life today. WHAT. TOOK. ME. SO. LONG!? I'm really enjoying making my way through every book and movie now. I saw Never Say Never Again with my father when I was 8 in the theatre. I loved it. I'd hesitate to refer to Pussy's sudden character shift as a nitpick given that it has a significant impact on how the final conflict plays out. Not to mention the arbitrary nature of it completely undermines everything that had been established about her character up to that point. It makes it next to impossible to take her seriously from that point on, not to mention it really undercuts the tension of the gas element of Operation Grandslam. It feels like the writers did such a good job of setting the odds against Bond that they couldn't figure out a way for him to surmount them while maintaining the internal logic of the film. The whole thing is so ridiculous that even the next movie pokes fun at it.

I may have said it before, but I saw "Goldfinger" when it came out and Oddjob scared the hellout of me, up to the point I thought my cousin's fiance (now husband of my cousin) was Oddjob and I ran away from him. As for your complaint about Goldfinger's guys not being able to paint Shirley Eaton gold, you have to remember that Harold Sedakas chope on Connery's neck severely hurt him. I know you couldn't give a ""rat's ass" about Ayn Rand'sview of the Bond films; however, she blasted the movies contra the Connery films, after "Dr. No," that is. I did read "From Russia with Love" and parts of "Goldfinger" and I think the motivations of the "Goldfinger" film is superior to the book. Does anyone else just love that guitar rendition of the Goldfinger theme at the end? So great. As for the movie, I have a love-hate relationship with it. I think it's flawed, the writing has issues and Pussy Galore never made an impact on me as a Bond girl, the pacing is off and as you mentioned, Bond doesn't do a whole lot. But none of that alters the undeniable fact that this film is iconic as hell. It may be less than the sum of its parts, but it has some damn fine parts to offer. So yeah. Characterising that barn scene as an instance of rape troubles me. It seems to me that the movie makes an effort to show, via Pussy's hand movements, that the encounter was consensual by the time the scene cuts out. It's not explicit, but I believe that was the intention. So at most, Bond commits battery or assault against Pussy by forcing the beginning of their encounter. She's hardly the first, last or most unfortunate victim of 007s battery though. Context is also king. She was a key player in a plot to kill tens of thousands of soldiers, and treason. Prosecuting Bond in this case would hardly be in the "public interest". As always though, I love your videos Calvin.

I never truly understood Goldfinger’s plot. I mean understand what he was trying to do, but didn’t understand how it was going to work. I didn’t think any nuclear device could be that close and simply make it radioactive and not vaporize and destroy it. If it was radioactive, how was it still not of value, since it just sat there as a symbol value, which is not passed around physically? Sadly, I was, (and still), pretty ignorant of the gold standard, and the national, and worlds financial systems of that day, and even more of the current systems.

This is definitely a fun movie and I love the golf scene, but there are some crazy scenes. How did Goldfinger know that Jill Masterson had a disorder where she breathed through her skin rather than her nose? I agree about the Solo scene. While the scene in Marnie is arranged to be serious and horrifying, the scene in Goldfinger is arranged to be playful. Iirc the character Marnie gets even more disturbed, because she actually feels raped, while Pussy changes sides, because she didn't feel raped but maybe passionately loved?

Plus, once they started kissing, she could have kneed 007 in the stomach or kicked him in the nuts..Maybe she succumbed because she couldn't resist those dark Scottish eyes. Only in the 60's could a normal man chuck a bar of solid gold like a baseball at a muscular henchman that takes it to the chest as if it were a stuffed teddy bear and audiences in the theatre don't find it the least bit cartoony. I'm not by the way, I'm a huge James Bond fan and prefer the more unrealistic films in the series, but man, I can't but watch these films today without coming to the conclusion the the world mentally and physically an entirely different beast than it is today.

SpenceDaFence No kidding. Compare Moonraker with Skyfall.

+DarthRushy Yeah, Moonraker is glorious, whereas Skyfall is shit.

teppolundgren I wouldn't go that far, but it's too artistic to be fully enjoyable as a Bond flick, at least for me. It's otherwise great.

DarthRushy The same could be said about Spectre, but I absolutely loved it! Best Daniel Craig Bond film by far.

teppolundgren Yeah, Spectre was pretty great. It was the first Bond flick I saw in the cinema, so that was literally awesome.

Worst Connery Bond film. Way too monotonous. And the gassing scene was so ridiculously fake; it put a real dent in the movie.
