Moonraker has risen up my ranking in recent years and so when I was in Paris a few months ago I made the one hour train excursion to Drax's chateau. It's a lovely visit even without the Bond connection but it is a really cool location for a Bond fan.

In my teenage Years, I thought Moonraker was just a silly stupid movie that was trying to cash on the Star Wars phenomena, I despised it. Now? I think Moonraker is a silly stupid movie that was trying to cash on the Star Wars phenomena... And I love It! Possibly the Bond-Moore at it's top and enjoyable craft from the 70's in terms of design, acting... all of it!

I used to only like Moonraker for the score and the cinematography/sets, but I keep coming back to it just as much for the things that don't work: the slow pace, the awful humor, the massive deviations from the (best) book, and the "ruination" of Jaws. It's all so silly, but so what, that's part of the fun. I now enjoy it as the Bond ballet. With dad jokes.

My opinion on Moonraker largely hasn't changed since I was a kid; I'd rank it slightly under halfway, maybe around 15th-18th. The one great quality about this film though is Drax. One of the best villains in the series!

Hell yes, I really love Moonraker so much and Moonraker along with Time After Time, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and The Black Hole with Robert Forster are the most underappreciated films of 1979. Moonraker is a very underrated and awesome bond film, this film just like The Black Hole had a brilliant John Barry music score, and Moonraker had great performances from Roger Moore, Lois Chiles, and Michael Lonsdale. Michael Lonsdale as Hugo Drax was an excellent bond villain, Lois Chiles was an amazing bond girl as Holly Goodhead, and the opening skydiving scene was very impressive. I also love Time After Time, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and The Black Hole. Time After Time was a brilliant time travel film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a pretty good Star Trek film, and The Black Hole by Disney is one of my favorite sci-fi films. The Black Hole had awesome characters like Dr. Hans Reinhardt, Maximilian, and V.I.N.CENT, Robert Forster was very good as Dan Holland, and The Black Hole had stellar special effects. Overall, I always liked Moonraker, Time After Time, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and The Black Hole from 1979, John Barry was a brilliant music composer for Moonraker and The Black Hole, and Moonraker as well as Time After Time, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and The Black Hole are all way more better films than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Flight into Space is definitely a great track. Tried to think what my favourite John Barry Bond piece was and was unable to come up with just one. Was able to narrow it down to a Top 007 though, in chronological order: • Into Miami (Goldfinger) • The Wedding (YOLT) • On Her Majesty’s Secret Service theme • Q’s Trick (DAF) • Flight into Space (Moonraker) • Snow Job (AVTAK) • Mujahideen and Opium (TLD) Even then I feel bad because I’m leaving off so many good pieces, but I had to stop somewhere otherwise it’d end up becoming a track listing of all the soundtrack albums.

The term Moonraker comes from smuggling in the eighteen or seventeenth century ; a smuggler who would work during night time , hence dreaming of gold in the title song ; there was also a film made in the 1950s / early sixties called The Moonraker about one such smuggler played by Ohmss actor George Baker

I find that more and more lately, if I want to put on a Bond film and just relax and have fun, I'm reaching for the Moore movies. I first binged all the films over a summer, so when I first saw Moonraker I thought "what the heck is this??" and it was very low in my estimation. However the opening stunt is truly one of the best ever and the movie is pretty good and fun when you accept that it's ridiculous and they're all flying around with laser guns. Still on the lower end, but I would easily watch this over Spectre.

I very much love Moonraker as well and it has always been one the films I tend to re-watch the most, definitely not the best in the series but just so much silly fun and indeed one of the best soundtracks in the series to boot! Might give it a try again pretty soon, so thanks!

I really wanted to love Moonraker, as Moore was on top of his game, and there was space action and all of that. But it could never beat Spy, and they turned Jaws into a laughing stock. The bit where Jaws is dressed as the clown still gives me goosebumps. Lets see how John Gardner is getting on with his screenplay... "Bond is about to slip out of his flat when the phone goes, it's Q. "Listen up 007, how's that experimental libido stimulator going?", "Sorry Q, something happened when I put it on high speed, and somehow it deflated in my hands". "Really 007. M wants to see you immediately." Bond steps through the door to M's secretary's office, and finds Moneypenny draped over the hatstand. He throws his hat, but it misses her head, and hands on her chest. "Good catch old girl, but don't back yourself into that umbrella.". The office was brown from layers of dust and pipe smoke. M looked worried. "We've had a message from your opposite number, get over there right away." Bond grabbed a taxi and headed for a secret base in Soho; number 69 Humpton muse. The door was open, and he leaned one eye inside the door to check it out, and then pushed it wide with a steely Clint Eastwood look. "Well Helloooo there big boy.." came a voice from the kitchen. Bond was hesitant, and gave her a side glance; "I'm sorry I appear to have completely lost my way to the gentleman's bridge club, miss...." "They call me Bonk, Joyce Bonk, oh double-dee negative.". She moved over to get a better look. "Oh, you will do nicely. Mind if I smoke?". She rips the end off a pack of cigarettes and pokes a holder in the other, and proceeds to smoke the whole pack at once. "Come and sit down, you look tired... what's wrong...?". Bond looks away and drops his head, "It's been a hard day. Some mad guy wanted to wipe out the entire planet just so two-dozen people could live on a space station; with a very tall man, and a woman with teeth braces." "Never mind dear, why not check out my new secret weapon, its called the double bazooms. All you have to do is insert you head here, and soon you'll forget about taking a smelly old leaf rake up to the moon." Bond buries himself and dies. See you next time on Boond Reboooted!

I've always loved your old reviews. Must've been right before the Skyfall release I found your channel, so they were still online at that time. As a 13-year old I was just happy there were more people in the world adoring 007 as I did. But as someone who used to make videos I can understand you'd like to give some context, so these reaction videos are quickly becomes some of my favourite extra's. About Moonraker, the comparison with DAD has always felt wrong to me. Both are silly, but Moonraker has the quality that DAD lacks (and that's from someone who appreciates DAD more than most people). Lewis Gilbert knew what filming was, because all three of his Bond films got some beautiful cinematography, where’s most of the 80s and 90s 007 films just look like a bit grey or boring to me. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy them thoroughly, but these Lewert Gilbert ones got something special. It probably also has to do with the great work Ken Adam and John Barry did as well.
@DafyddBrooks
@DafyddBrooks 2 жыл бұрын
Thats a wonderful point man. There are many great film making elements in Moonraker that sadly DAD didn't have. Some of the most outlandish ideas in that movie could have worked if it wasnt due to poor executuion and build up to those epic moments. Moonraker at least gives you those hints through out the movie where its going and what its building up towards and has at least a decent detective story for Bond to journey along. It knows what it wants to be right from the start, where as DAD kinda starts all over again once Bond has his job back again . Thanks for sharing man :)

Yeah, definitely. Michael Lonsdale lends Moonraker a sense of gravitas which DAD doesn’t have, what with Toby Stephens chewing the scenery so much it’s a wonder he didn’t get indigestion*. I think the biggest difference is that Moonraker knows it’s all silly and has a self-knowing quality that DAD doesn’t quite have - it’s trying just a bit too hard to be cool. *Just to be clear, I don’t blame Toby Stephens - he’s a great actor, I think he just got bad direction from Tamahori.

Moonraker has in my opinion one of the best sets of any Bond movie up until then. The special effect for the space part where done to a level you only could see in 2001 and Star Wars and it looked very realistic. The movie is a lot of fun. The plot a 20.000 leagues in space rip off but that is fine. Only negative I have is Jaws. The character is stiff as Frankenstein's monster with arthritis. He is so slow you could easily walk away from him before he hits you.

I was eight-years-old when Star Wars came out. I loved two things. Star Wars and James Bond... Well, guess what the best thing about 1979 was??? (No, not the election of the Conservative government). BTW, Calvin's Bieber cut was rocking.

Calvin, you ought to review OSS117 Cairo, Nest of Spies. A great French James Bond parody.

This is actually a fun review, and I’ve always had a soft spot for Moonraker, maybe it’s my love of Jaws, but it just has a fun and stylish feel to it.

This is the revisit that I've been waiting for! Moonraker was also my first Bond film, and it remains beloved in my eyes. It's also the original Calvin review that I remember best. If there is one phrase from this channel that has always stuck in my mind it is "pretty fucking fit in hi-def." It certainly got me excited to watch Moonraker when I bought the Bond 50 set. 🤣

I rank Moonraker highly as it’s very enjoyable. Definitely in the top fifteen. Drax was a compelling villain. Loved the space battle. (Yes I imagined Star Wars at points!). Only the theme tune with Shirley Bassey is odd. What is a Moonraker and where does it go? Why does it leave a trail? 🤔🤷🏼‍♂️😅

I very much enjoyed this movie. I am a huge admirer of Roger Moore's, I loved John Barry's score, the title song is perhaps my favourite of the series (I can sing it in a robust low baritone-bass, or as a high alto), Lois Chiles (Dr. Holly Goodhead, NASA scientist and astronomer) is one of my favourite Bond women; she held her own in the action of the conclusion.

Many years after I 1st saw this something crossed my mind that now pops up every time i see the scene where Bond & Holly go after the globes. Why would a space shuttle ever need to be armed?
@BenCol

They’re using Drax’s personal shuttle - he had a few optional extras installed. Perhaps a touch megalomaniacal to kit out your personal space shuttle with a laser weapon, but if you’re a Bond villain you might as well go the whole hog.

Not to be that guy but did you catch yourself referring to Goodhead as Goodnight in your old review? Honestly it's genuinely heartwarming to hear someone say nice things about Moonraker these days. Especially after Quentin Tarantino trashed it mercilessly on his podcast. Moonraker was technically my first James Bond film too. I say technically because it was this weird mash-up on Arabic TV comprised of the last ten minutes of Spy Who Loved Me, the dragged by a speedboat shark chase sequence from For Your Eyes Only (Carol Bouquet made a big impression on my then six year old brain) and the bulk of Moonraker minus the opening parachute stunt! I grew up in Saudi Arabia where bizarre mutant 're-edits like these were common. I once saw a mash-up of Don't Look Now with The Shining and most disturbingly Friday the 13th and The Care Bears Movie.

Yes Moonraker. Also the first Bond I saw at the Cinema. So yes playing the nostalgia card I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Still love Moonraker, to this day. Rewatched it, a month or two back, and still had a lot of fun with it. It may not be a perfect film, but it's so over-the-top that it's hard not to enjoy.
