I've been caving once - only once. Looking back, going with experienced cavers, I felt like it was way more advanced than a rookie could tackle. I was poorly equipped, and way out of shape, I have never been THAT close to a full on panic. One spot I had to empty the air from my lungs to be able to squeeze through one spot. Another obstacle was a very long belly crawl with minimal clearance. Not being able to turn my head as I was crawling on my belly was a new and frightening sensation. I will say, sitting in an enormous room, in complete silence and darkness, was some of the most peaceful moments I've experienced. There is no time in a cave. No awareness of sun up or sun down. I think you need to be kind of a nut job to be a caver - and I mean that in the most positive and respectful way. Hats off to you both!

I had been in a lot of caves but of the four of us, one guy was experienced and had done that cave several times before and I think I'd still be down there if he wasn't with us. One guy in our group had a bit of a panic attack just above the hall of faces and I fought my own demons struggling - and failing - to get back up through the birth canal. Without one guy pulling from above and another pushing from below I'd have been screwed. I had never felt claustrophobic before but that cave required all the mental strength I had. Your video brings back all those feelings of anxiety and near-panic even now, 25 years . Well done guys, and I'm glad somebody other than me is still enjoying that cave.
@CalvinHikes2 жыл бұрын
Yeah sounds like a fun trip. That little cave does have a few challenges. Above the hall of faces I found to be really tricky during the Winter when it was muddy and slippery. But it's a great place to experience a little bit of fear without putting yourself in too much danger. The popularity of that gave may result in it being fully gated. But we will see.

Yeah we had several folks say that nobody looks at the soda straw pillar even though it's clearly marked on the map. Initially it seems like it would be difficult to get to but it's really not. But it will turn back most casual cavers. It's also difficult to film because it's a very small room.

Wow thank you so much for this...I've been obsessed with the Hell Hole, because it's such an interesting phenomenon. The fact that it's a narrow, crawly, and highly vertical cave, but is so close to the city environment that many high school/university kids have ventured in (probably a lot of people who aren't necessarily experienced cavers, but rather just people taking part in a local challenging activity). The way that we all have these well known named areas based on the hand drawn map from 1989. And now we get to see for the first time an exploration of the lesser known sections, and attempts to expand mapping beyond tunnels labeled impossible to traverse! I've always wondered what that "soda straw column" would look like!

I like that it's a shared experience for those who have gone in. Most of the caves we go and we are the only ones ever. There's no trading stories.
