I bought my manual E92 (coupe) 330d as a stop gap after my E36 M3 was stollen nearly 3 years ago. Still got it!!! Hands down one of the best cars i've owned. It did turn out a previous owner had had it mapped so it's a fair bit quicker than stock. In day to day driving it's faster than the M3 was because of the torque and returns 40+mpg. Whats not to like? Not driven a diesel audi but have driven a V6 petrol which left me cold, FWD 😔

Having driven both I'd say the Beemer engine is far more superior. The power delivery feels a lot more satisfying and stronger

Wouldn't touch the 3.0tdi audi engine without Quattro plus the fact a 2.0tdi will put out 170 so really not so much extra power for the extra engine size

Not a Fair race to be fair. The drop top 3 series is 250kg heavier than the E92 coupe

Totally fair. Actually it's 280kg which is like carrying 3 extra large passengers, however the BMW has 30 bhp more. If you look at the power to weight ratio, then the Audi only has 3 bhp/ton more which is nothing, therefore the difference is down to gearing, drag or more likely the torque (Calvin - can you add this to the stats as well). By the way, each 10th of a second is approximately one car length, therefore the Audi won the 0-60 by 2 car lengths. It would be interesting to see the comparison after stripping the BMW out or injecting nitrous in the intake (there's a video that showed a 201bhp diesel engine make 272 bhp with just a small shot in the intake).

I remember the x reg bmw 330d 180 bhp 0 to 60 in about 7.6 seconds with a manuel gear box. The mid range torque in 3rd and 4th gear was immense.

@@justsomeguy1141 you need an eye test. The E46 is looking very dated. Granted the E93 isn’t the greatest. The E92 still today looks very modern. Interiors too. You stick a E92 M3 next to the new M3 and M4s and it’ll not stand out àn E46 would look ancient

The 330D saloon weighs about 300kg less and is unsurprisingly quite a lot faster as you can easily lose over a second from the 0-60 time. A simple remap can knock a couple of seconds from the 1/4 mile time which in the real world makes them bloody fast as in Golf R fast and quicker in gear due to 50% more torque.

Makes sense as the horsepower is more top end speed where weight doesn't factor too much as it does off the line for example. So the higher powered BMW went quicker top end. Plus the BMW has probably lost a few ponies.

Bro.. this is a completely unfair test. The BMW is a vert and therefore will be much heavier than a coupe. Secondly, you used the prefacelift 330d from 2008. You should have compared it with the LCI 330d which is noticeably more powerful

I really like the way you come across on screen, you should be on top gear or something better than that cos I would rather see this channel than the pretty lame top gear I only saw one time since Clarkson and friends left. I have been involved in the modified German car scene for over 20 years and you have given a fair evaluation of both models here, just to add to what you have already said, the best production all wheel drive system in the world is the genuine quattro version, not to be confused with the Haldex system on the small vag cars like the golf and a1 and a3, which is still a good system just not permanent 4wd. So if you had a 335d and the higher power a5 3.0 tdi you would have a better match with the 335d being more powerful and the audi will have a lot more traction with the quattro set up. This gives the a5 a much harder launch than the bmw, but the 335d will reel it in after the first 2 gear changes. The choice between the two is a difficult one, the audi is a better car for daily usage with more comfort and less noise, arguably the better looking and more reliable, and the bmw is a more responsive, more precise handling car, feeling more like a performance car than the smooth comfort based audi, which for me is a bit hard over bumps but a nicer place to be inside. I've had a few models of both of these from the m3 to the rs5 and the bmw is the most involving car to drive and it's the one that makes you smile, the audi feels like a luxury car with the whole image of it yet its a numb feeling when compared to the bmw. If you like driving in a feeling what the car is doing then you need the bmw, if you want a quick comfortable well built reliable car you can depend on, and you don't need to feel like a racing driver then get the audi and you will be more than happy

I own the Mercedes c350cdi have had oil cooler seals leak which is expensive as over 8 hours labour plus suspension level sensors and sensors and a few other bit. If I was to buy again I would go for the beemer better mpg better performance more options available if you want to tune it. And I beleive just as reliable

BMW has higher HP but lower TQ. Audi has lower HP but higher TQ. So the Audi will get the bimmer on the jump, but the bimmer takes it on the long straight.

Fifth gear did the S5 v 335i and the 335i just won. I have an A5 running enough power to embarrass as S5 and I'd rather have a 335i., Just for driver engagement. A5s are boring and mine is one of the better ones

that a5 is the shitty one with the multitronic cvt gearbox, the other ones with the s tronic/tiptronic gearbox are a good 1.5 seconds quicker in 0-60 and also have a 4 wheel drive as opposed to fwd

A5 3.0 TDI the sound is insane and the torque it provides is just other wordly A5 all day can squeeze 330 bhp and 770nm with good stage 1 remap from the boys at darkside developments

The quattro is 240. Map up to 300bhp / 600nm with no other mods. The bm is the better car of these two.
