Tip for doing this job is a roll of plastic sandwich bags, that you use to hold all the fasteners and small parts per assembly, and a small zip tie or a knot to attach bag to part. Also the bags are good to cover ports and pipes, keeping debris from entering. Do not have to be strong, or ziploc, the cheapest ones will do fine.

Been doing this for years, especially when it's something I know is gonna be apart for a while. Cheap ziplock bags and a roll of masking tape to label everything.

Legit Street Cars starting using single use aluminum muffin pans to keep them sorted lately. I think he saw it at a DeLorean shop or something, and the past few videos he's been really excited to share his find lol. I always used zip locks, but I'm kind of sold on the muffin pans now. Not only does it keep bolts together, but you can keep them in order of disassembly, too!

When I had my Corvette shop we bought 4 shelf shelves, and added casters and braces so we could roll them around. When we took a car apart we would place the parts on the shelves/carts with a piece of tape saying what job they went to. We restored cars so some jobs could have 5 or 6 carts, but it kept parts together and off the floor with less losses and damage. We also used plastic cups to keep the bolts with the part they came off of, with a show car you can lose points for having the wrong bolt in the wrong place, so details are very important.

@@devinangola3458 We found that it actually took up less space using the carts, instead of it laying on the floor in a pile, it’s stacked up vertically taking up less space. Hopefully, Ray sees this and takes it into consideration, it made a big difference in our shops and I’m sure it will in his.

I learned (reinforced by a spank and being sent to my room without desert for a few days) when I was around 5 or 6 that it is a LOT easier to take something apart than to put it back together correctly. In my case, it was the kitchen wall phone and it had to be replaced. - After that, I was only allowed to take apart things that were already broken or had stopped working, but it channeled my inquisitiveness and led to a career of electronics repair.

What a deal. Ray tearing down an LS to remove that junk AFM crap and also an Eric O vid on the same morning. That's starting your day the best way. Wish I had my 05 Silverado torn down and a nice little improvement cam and lifter set...no AFM model. Looks so easy how Ray tears it down in like record time (video editing but still). When I get the green I might have to have mine shipped down and done on video so I can see. Fascinating to me the ins and outs and how simple they look when broken down this clearly and straight forward. Now, can't wait to see the rebuild. That SS might just have gotten another 300k sitting in it after this. Cheers.

I had my AFM/DOD disabled by the king of LS tuning (James Brewer). He did things to elongate the engine and transmission: * Fuel map fixes for better performance * Trans pressures/shift points to elongate the 4T65E-HD glass trans * Removed the speed governor but put in an rpm limit of 6500 to protect the engine * Cooling fans on almost continuously to protect engine and mostly transmission AFM/DOD parts are still in the engine and can still fail, real fix is to get the LS4 King's DOD delete kit. I have a Lacrosse Super. The cars that run the LS4 are W-bodies (GMX230/231/365). Chevy Monte Carlo SS, Chevy Impala SS, Pontiac GXP (with shift paddles) and the Buick Lacrosse Super. Super is a sleeper and is actually the fastest of the 4, especially with a tune. Not as sporty as the rest. When the trans gives up the ghost, I'll be doing the DOD delete thing, Triple Edge Performance transmission rebuild and put her back on the road for another 200k+ miles (214k on her now)

Those engines were bulletproof before they decided to appease the EPA by haphazardly slapping this system onto a proven platform. Looks like a Impala with a V8. Some of them had a V8 in 2006 and 2007. A real common problem on those was the rack and pinion. I had those cars, and the steering rack was toast by 3 years or 20,000 miles. They would leak fluid. Flushing the steering fluid did nothing to prolong the problem. Many other Chevy Impala owners said there should be a spare replacement steering rack in the trunk because it is a common failure part.

I liked how you pulled this engine apart in macro assemblies.... it only makes sense and it makes reassembly so much easier.... P.S. I love watching you.... I love the steel toe'd safety crocks.... ; ) Doc.

Interesting teardown of the LS, and explanation of the AFM system. Assembly minus that system will be interesting. Will the electronics of the car have to be modified without the AFM? We did get a small Lauren/WifeUnit cameo, and a little bit of Dave too. Thanks. 😊

LS engines are super easy and fun to work on. SO many different aftermarket options. The lobes on the afm cam are different in the location of affected cylinders.

I was just thinking those exhaust bolts are coming out really easy and then the last one broke off, lol. And Ray, get a folding table or two to put all the parts on during disassembly! 😉

Exhaust bolts, use pb blaster catalyst and spray the bolt and beyond the flange. I got all of mine out without breaking them. Definitely look at the pushrods and rocker arms for wear spots Check the rocker bridges for wear/damage, I replaced a set on an angine I acquired. Use the factory GM Lifter Trays or BTR units, not chinesium Amazon units. Dod delete I believe requires blocking off the ports that the oil passes through to the VLOM. Sealant is only required at the 4 corners where the rear and front covers meet the oil pan. The cam seal plate I replace due to seal wear.
