30 year master tech here. Do it the right way. I was never that lazy on those pressure senors to risk other damage and looking at a half hour diffidence at most. You can clean under the intake, install a new screen and install new gaskets which are prone to leaking after high mileage. Keep on trucking your way.

On my 07 5.3 I did the reach around to replace the sensor and put in a new filter. It was pretty quick. I think If I have to do it again I’d pull the intake. Then replace the intake gaskets also. Pretty hard on the hand. Book time or actual, IDK. You have a minimum one hour probably. Because your experience gives you a more efficient way to get the job done doesn’t mean you have to give up your profit. You’re in business to make money. So those people who think you are ripping off the customer need to grow up. Like your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Ray, that LY5 could need the early 2011 updated left valve cover. That thing looks to be taking in a lot of oil from the PCV. Same issue my 2011 aluminum block LC9 had. Was built just before the new valve cover was released. LY5 is on the same TSB. Mine burned a lot of oil. The cylinders were carboned and it spark knocked bad. It burned about 2.5qt every 5k. Had dealership swap the valve cover and it dropped to using less than 1/8qt. Took three dealerships, four techs and my own research to figure out what the problem was.

It's easy for some viewers here to suggest removing the oil sensor with the intake manifold in situ, and that's OK if you are working on your own vehicle, but if Ray should injure his hand, or get a cut that becomes infected, then it's a bunch of down time for him which is costly. Besides, considering the mileage on that truck, and the worn out manifold gaskets, not to mention the crap accumulating in the valley, a manifold disassembly is indicated anyway. Look forward to the rest of the work to be done.

I think he had it backwards. Since a sensor modulates voltage, the signal is the output of the sensor, which would be a voltage between zero and the input voltage (either battery voltage or 5 volts). So, a voltage high error code means the output voltage is high, which could be a short in the extreme case. A voltage low error code means the output voltage is low, which in the extreme could be an open circuit.

On a customer truck, sure, make sure the VLOM works as intended. For my personal truck, after a DoD (AFM) lifter collapse, I made sure the VLOM would never send oil pressure to the lifters again and reprogrammed to prevent DoD from ever operating again.

I did this job on my own truck. Yes you can get the screen out and replace it with the manifold in place. I did it. Mid length socket made for the task (12 bucks on Amazon) and a flex head socket wrench and that sensor can come out with the old reach around. 'Course I had to get up and into the engine bay, but it's no big deal. I did this job in about 30 minutes, and I'm just a DIYer. That being said, I have no issue with following the manual. Cheating? I don't see it that way. It's just another technique. As a lawyer, I too deal with billable hours and I charge for my actual time, not for the time it would have taken someone not as good as me.

My next door neighbor has changed that oil sensor unit several times using GM parts. I've never heard him talk about cleaning the screen beneeth it. I'd bet that has been his problem all along. Thanks Ray for bringing that detail to my attention.

Usually the sensor will come with a new filter. You can get it out with a small pick. Also, you have to be careful not to over tighten it. It’s like 15 inch pounds or something and if you over tighten it, it will defunct out early.

I used a piece of curtain wire bent like a fishhook to remove that screen, although I replaced it with the intake on the engine. You just have to be good at using your hands in a blind spot. Toss some old cardboard over the intake and lay on the engine to replace the oil press sensor and curtain wire hook to get the FOD valve solenoid oil filter screen out. It can be done in 45 minutes if you know how to use your hand blindly. The solenoids probably quit working when the filter got clogged and all that valley pan work wasn't necessary. No dig on Ray for doing a full and competent job. I'm more of a roadside guy that only does what it needs to keep it in service. Those 5.3's are famous for that filter getting plugged and many mechanics delete the filter when replacing the OPS so you may not always find a filter screen if someone previously removed it.

Doing the job properly is the only way to fly. Shortcuts can lead to issues further down the line and they come out of your pocket since you helped create the issue. It's Ray's shop and channel so how he does things is up to him and if people don't like it they can go elsewhere. But it's a 5 minute job to remove the oil sensor, including the screen. No need to take off the intake and risk damaging or breaking all those electrical connectors and everything else that needs to be manipulated to remove the intake. Especially on older vehicles where everything is more brittle and breaks easier. It is amusing to hear so many compliment Ray on doing things by the book. Anyone who is a real fan of the channel has seen Ray take shortcut after shortcut whenever possible. It's a feature, not a bug.

I have changed probably 10 oil pressure switches on these without pulling the manifold. You can get the screen out with a pick. But I was working for someone else so I had to do what I was told. I agree pulling the intake is a much easier way. We never charged for removing the intake either.

After mentoring junior electronic technicians for many years…I always complete the project following the manufacturer procedures /instructions. Once they reach six months or so (depending on the ET) you may start showing any shortcuts that experience has provided you.

I replaced my oil pressure switch/sensor about 4 months ago. Since I did the work myself, I took the shortcut. From a professional standpoint though, I don't care if the job takes you 45min or book hours, I'm paying for the experience. I appreciate seeing a tech doing their due diligence to make sure everything is the same as it was before they touched it. I have been watching your vids for a couple years, and I have learned so much from them. Thank you for showing people the correct steps to fixing vehicles.

Depends on where you work. A local shop giving a break on labor hours is understandable; as long as the tech and shop stay profitable, you'll retain and maybe attract more business. Dealership environment will charge full rate to maximize profits

Other than the trolls, I can assume that the rest of us will agree that you only charge what needs to be charged and nothing more. You've talked about this before, not too long ago, about finding more efficient ways to do certain jobs. For example, you're doing a cv shaft job that calls for 2.4 hours, and you're able to do it in 1.4 hours. You, being the honest man you are, you will charge 1.4 hours. I personally will do it more by the book just because everything "usually" goes smoother. If you break something, you either fix it or bite the bullet and replace it on your own dime. The bolts should also use loctite on the bolts, that’s why they seamed tight when loosing. One vibrates loose and drops into valley wound be good.

Less time involved for sure but those that thought you were cheating the customer by doing it the other way are wrong. A shortcut is a shortcut and its not cheating the customer necessarily either but I always charged accordingly. You're charging for the knowledge too!

AFM actually disables the lifters so valves stay closed when AFM is activated. This eliminates the pumping losses that would occur if you keep the valves working.

Wouldn't there still be compression/vacuum to be overcome so the remaining 4 cylinders would need to work harder. Surely keeping the valves slightly open would make more sense, or alternately a decompression valve.

When the piston is coming back up for the exhaust stroke where the exhaust would be pushed out, the combusted air/fuel mixture stays in the cylinder and acts like an air spring so the other cylinders that are still firing don’t have to work quite as hard.

Disagree. The shop rate is about $150 I think. If the book says a job takes 4 hours, and Ray can do it in 2 (because he has special tools and lots of expertise) but Troy takes 6 hours ( because he’s an apprentice) should Troy get paid 3x as much for the same job? No. You could adjust that by charging 3x per hour for Ray’s time, I suppose. The book time allows the shop to have one rate, and the master mechanic makes more money by doing more jobs in a day, while the apprentice makes less because they can’t do as many jobs in the same amount of time. Giving a discount when you can do a job faster than the book is nice, but not morally required unless the book is clearly wrong. Otherwise, the Master mechanic works harder and makes less money and the apprentice works less and makes more.

Book time is based on new vehicles and everything cooperating with you. Wouldn’t that be nice? Rust, broken bolts, things rigged up by the previous guys etc., all could add time it takes to the job. If you kill book time by half the time or more, then you may feel the need to give them a little discount.

That oil leak might be from the sensor. I replaced one on a savana van through the doghouse because the oil was coming through the middle of the sensor. Couldn't imagine replacing that sensor on a pickup without removing the intake manifold. Keep the videos coming.

The description of the AMF is mostly correct. Under normal operation (8cyl mode), the lifer is locked and acts like a normal lifer. In the active operation (4cyl mode), oil pressure is applied and allows a set of locking lugs to retracted and now with every rotation of the cam, the lifer collapses, and the valve stays shut. In the failure mode of the lifer, the locking lugs either get suck retracted or the surfaced they lock into break or wears away. Both situations result in the lifter not being able to operate normally. It is more efficient for the engine to continually compress the same volume of air rather than pumping air though the engine which causes parasitic losses. (Enginering explained has a good video on this) I recently had all of the AMF and standard lifters replaced in my 2015 Silverado with the 5.3 at 91000 miles because I had multiple lifters give up or stop working entirely correctly in 8cyl mode. This was the first time this failure happened to this truck. I took it to the dealer and the tech was surprised that it was at 91k miles and did not have this failure earlier. I got lucky and there was no cam damage and while fuel did get into the crank case (something like .5 to 75 qt) there was no low end bearing damage either.

I think the question of "what to charge" depends a lot on how the contract between the shop and customer is created. and from legal aspects, it still may differ locally. In many places for example, old traditional "business by handshake" would still in a way define a legal contract. But I think a lot comes to wording. Are you charging set prices for certain operations? Then it simply is that set price. You can do it in less time, good for you. You run into complications, bad luck, or it gets really interesting. Would removing a broken bolt (yeah I know Ray, painful topic ;) ) be considered a part of the operation sold by a fixed price, or is this something new and additionally billable? Again, could all be hidden in the wording. If book times are just considered a reference to make an estimate and time is charged as used, well, if you can do it faster it should cost less. One could argument you could do other business in the time saved. Is this getting punished for beeing good at your job? Yeah, I guess so, but that is what you get in all trades, even with office jobs. If you are good at it they all the time want or expect you to do more of it.

This is a very touchy subject. I always build my bids high. You never know what you will find when you take stuff apart. One old service mgr of mine said some jobs you make money, some you lose. Best thing is to be honest. If book on a job is 5 hours and you have done it several times at 2.5 hours, you should maybe charge 3 hours instead of 5. So I bid out 5 hours and tell the customer unless I run into issues it will likely be closer to 3 hours. This is if you are self employed. If you own a dealership, one tech can do it in 2.5, the next needs the 5 hours. So the writers almost have to bid 5 hours not to lose money on certain techs.

At 41:32 when the solenoids were lifted off, there are only 3 of 4 black disks remaining on the bottom plate. It appears the 2nd from the left got carried away with the top plate. It appears to be missing. I never saw that go back on re-installation. I'm not a mechanic but you might want to recheck that!!! EDIT*** There is at least 8 other previous commenters that saw this too. As usual I'm late to the party.

It’s a lift post not a arm and I’m confused how do you expect Ray to get out of the vehicle? Is he supposed to NASCAR it and slide out of the window or remote control the vehicle and pull it in via remote I would like to know how you would get the job done.

The mechanics who use short cuts should not be in business in my opinion! By taking short cuts you might miss something that needs to be fixed. Like I said short cuts are for fools. If you do the work the way it was intended return trips for service might be averted. As far as charging the customer, if the mechanic takes a short cut he should charge less!

You have worked at dealerships before, you know that’s how a mechanic earns his money. Book time is 2.5 hours, he completes the repair in .5 hours. Book time gets charged and the mechanic moves to next job. Quicker you are the more money you make.

Well, well, well! I remember that job. I felt the people that were 'hammering' you, almost had never done a job like that. As an 80+ guy, who still works on his own vehicle, I never could figure out why GM, even years ago, would put the most failure prone item on the engine BEHIND a part that would last longer than the rest of the vehicle. Re how you charge. I think it depends on how you scope out the work. In general if you are just going by hours, then you should chrage for actual time up or down. If you are charging by the job within pre established criteria, then you should benefit from the shortcut. But if the job takes twice as long, thats a risk you are assuming. It's more about setting and agreeing to specific expectations and documenting it per job imo.

Hi, Ray, just finished watching you replace the o-rings and gaskets on the AFM assy. There was a missing rubber seal on the second to last solenoid on the AFM plate. I hope you did replace that seal before you placed the assy back onto the engine block but, I didn't observe it, I would either review this video to make sure before continuing the repair and have to find out the hard way and disassemble everything again. I know you love your job that's why you do it twice. Go to 44:36 time and you can see the seal is not in place where the 2nd. solenoid sits on the plate. Keep up the good work. BRAKLEEN RED FOR ALL!

On that fuel line the connector comes up without drama if you either disable the fuel pump and crank it to bleed the pressure or pop that cap on the fuel rail on the passenger side and depress the shredder valve to release it first, you can man handle them off but you could damage the locking mechanism. I've done those oil pressure sensors both ways... always easier with the intake off, except when theirs a body lift... then its easy enough to do with the intake still installed. You risk damaging the plug as well as the evap connector when you try doing it with the intake on. For those who say you should just do it the quick way do they bill the customer for the time it takes to fix those problems if they cause them. If its your truck and you want to take short cuts go ahead, but if the "book" says to do it the more involved way and you don't I think your taking a risk if you try and short cut it.

I do these pretty regular. A 45° angled mini pick makes pulling the derby screen from under the oil sending unit out with the intake in place easy. Just hope you have small hands…

It all depends on the job. About 10 years ago, I had the same problem with my RAM 1500 CATS. The dealer wanted $1,200 just for the CAT assembly, not including labor. I took it to a muffler shop instead, and the cut & welded new CATs in for half what the dealer wanted just for parts. I'm still driving the truck and have had no problems since.

I have a LC9 5.3l in my 2008 jeep jk. It's way easier to pull the intake off and change the oil sensor. It's about a 15 minute job to pull it off. For the fuel line, put a rag under it to catch the fuel. Pull the line to you, put the tool in and then pull it apart. Last thing is put a 3/8 rubber cap on the fuel rail so the fuel doesn't spill everywhere

Having spent over 30 years as a passive mechanic I have come to understand that there is a legitimate reason for following the established procedure for repairs. If you don't have the time or desire required to do the job correctly you should not commit to doing it at all as the possibility of creating further issues is extraordinarily high.

Rainman, one more thing that can impact oil pressure on these trucks is the O-ring on the oil pickup tube. Over time it is unable to hold a seal and it can starve the top end of the motor which is already under duress due to the AFM. If the customer OK's the repair I would also drop the oil pan and replace that O-ring.

You can get the delete kit for the AFM system, a little pricey but it is worth it

Solution. Replace oil pressure sensor, replace break light switch. Remove debre from catilitic converter, add resistors to the post cat o2 sensors. About 2kohm should do it each side. Block Off EGR soloniod. Leave it attatched.

I firmly believe that is is not the time that it takes to fix an item, but the quality of the repair job. You film ALL your work for You Tube so it would be hard to not see the quality you put into your work. Any other garage probably does cut corners, and gets results charging a full fee for their work. YOU Ray, are an honest person - I don't think any customer of yours would mind paying the 'quote' price that you always tell them before the work is even attempted. You get the job done, fixed and repaired for the price you quoted. IF you cut hours off the job, you can always be honest and say so to your customers - they will always come back to an honest technician. By being 'you' - you have built up a reputation for being honest and reliable. You know your onions. Continue doing what you do best will ensure you always have a stream of cars coming in to your shop for repairs and fixing. By the way... this video was, as always, NICE!

GM fatal flaw is the AFM. Best to go to aftermarket and buy the AFM delete kit and install it so this doesn’t happen anymore.

Unfortunately too many people now days live to complain and are inflexible, must be their way or your wrong, just ignore them and keep doing things your way, you're not going to change their mind and are wasting your time trying, so keep up the good work. Honesty is the best policy. If you charge per job, it's a fixed price; if you charge per hour, charge for the time worked. An apparent 'discount' will endear you to your customer.
