I lived in auburn for about ten years and just about everyone has a Bo Jackson legend they've heard before. I was lucky enough to meet him at a Bo Bikes Bama event in 2022. He was so gracious with everyone. Stopped to take a selfie with absolutely every person that asked. Asked their name, shook their hand, thanked them for being there. 100% pure class. Elite athlete, elite human. ❤

Very nice guy. Well spoken, respectful to everyone who approached him. When he was with the Angeles he came to Iowa when our minor league team was affiliated with the Angels. Why he was there I have no idea but he shook hands and talk to people before and after the game. I was 14 then and had grew up loving watching him do what Bo does football and baseball. The guys strength, speed, and power was almost in human. The Raiders were never my team but we all tuned into watch Bo. And when he got hurt it devastated alot of us kids. But luckily he could still play baseball and sometimes you'd catch him on a fishing and hunting channel. Definitely one of my sports heros as a kid. I worked all summer 3 yrs in a row just to be able to buy his Nikes for school alot of us did, it was either Bo Jacksons or Michael Jordan's, and later kids had Shaqs Reeboks with the CO2 cartridge. Man I miss the 80s and 90s.

The things these talented young men and women dealt with in the time when college sports was becoming national and monetized was deplorable. The multibillion-dollar industry that feeds on their talent and hard work has finally had to pay the piper for the decades of exploitation.

In addition, his minor league career was ridiculously short. He was hitting major league pitching basically as a raw talent that played half the season. When he was at his peak, he could hit the fastball. It was the curveball that gave him trouble. It’s not unreasonable to assume that that extra time in the minor leagues he could’ve become more disciplined at the plate. He was the only guy in my 50 years of watching pro sports that made the dimensions of a baseball diamond look smaller than everybody else.

Even as a Phillies fan, I've always appreciated the 90s Braves teams because even as a kid I recognized the greatness in their pitching rotation with Smoltz, Maddox and Glavine. So when the Phillies beat them in the 93' NLCS it made it that much more special. I was 9 years old and remember going into that series just grateful the Phillies had made it that far but no way they'd beat the Braves... But they did and it was incredible. The greatest thing about Bo Jackson is not just the lore. There is talk about Bo’s speed. His explosiveness. His strength. Just everything about Bo that sounds utterly ridiculous to all of us mere mortals. No way he ran a 4.13 40 time. And then there are the people who played with and against him. While the rest of us armchairs said such stuff was impossible? Those people in football and baseball and track and field will talk about Bo and say that everything they say about Bo is not only 100% true but that the stories are moderated in order to maintain some believability. It wasn’t just those of us who witnessed him do it (I got to see him play in person against the Bengals run for a TD of over 90 yards against the Bengals. From those cheap seats at the Coliseum it was clear that he was the biggest and the fastest and the baddest) who were awed. It was the elite pros who said that we mere mortals have no idea just how fast and big and strong he was.

It really felt like he set the stage for everyone else that followed, aka mark reynolds, dan uggla, and any other players who can't hit for average, strike out a ton, mash 20-40 homeruns a year and walk a semi moderate amount each season.)
