In our recent pony car comparison test, the retro-heavy - and just plain heavy - 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS walked away with top honors in its debut. The big V8-powered coupe needed a new challenge. It was time to refocus the lens. Shoot from a different angle, so to speak.

Challenger is modern muscle. It is wide, heavy, long, and manly. It may not be the fastest, but it sure is the most iconic. A Challenger SRT8 is a tank with the Hemi.

SES10M Well, the lines are blurred, but Pony Car is defined by many as an American, front-engined, RWD, two-door coupe with a long hood and a short deck. The Mustang was the first to have that design. Shortly after, Chevy/Pontiac and Dodge/Plymouth came out with their versions. Muscle Car has more to do with a large, powerful V8 engine.

OddTimeMan muslce cars are 2+2 American cars with front large displacement, Pony cars are a sub category where small coupes keeping 2+2 seats with large displacements engines, People make the mistake to say the Mustang was the first muscle car when the actual first muscle car was the Pontiac GTO designed by John Delorean, cars like the GTO and the Plymoth road runner where Big coupes compared to the smaller muscle cars, when the mustan came out people started to call it a Pony car because of its small size compared to other muscle cars and so the muscle care where born now the mustang and the camaro have grown in size and weight so they keep the heritage name of pony cars but they are now more muscle cars (even if the are smaller than the charger an challenger who always have been muscle cars)

I have seen those gt500s of that year trapping like 118ish. These cars are running much slower than normal. The 13-14 gt500 was just as fast if not faster than the newer 15 up hellcat. The precious shelbys can also beat hellcats with a simple 1500-2000 dollar blower swap.

No it actually wouldn't. This gt500 was trapping 9 mph higher than the challenger. It would take big boost to gain enough mph to "destroy" the gt500. The non hellcat challengers aren't known for being able to take boost very well. You throw a blower on either of these other cars then the gt500 gets an aftermarket blower. These cars are all stock. You throw an aftermarket blower on one they all should get an aftermarket blower. Guess what the gt500 would still come out on top. This is an old comment but still a dumb one.

My 2008 challenger runs 13.2 @ 107 on an automatic. Automatics are becoming increasingly more efficient on the strip.

I really liked this video. Anybody from the 60's knows the quarter mile is the true test of muscle & HP. Couple comments: The 13.6 time in the quarter for the Challenger, I find that pretty hard to believe unless the Challenger was inhibited with a stick shift and the driver wasn't pulling good power shifts (never taking your foot off the floored gas pedal and shifting thru gears as fast as your little hands can go). I drove a stock (no fancy tires, no headers, all stock) 1968 Dodge Coronet (a boat of a car and weight but no stick shift) automatic slapstick trannie with a 375 hp 440 CID engine in the quarter at the Wichita Int'l Raceway in 1968 and got the same time with it. 13.6 in the quarter. I think the new Challenger could beat that time with an automatic trannie in it.

@TheElysianTerror Yeah I see what you mean, but the GT is really the sportier version of the V6 mustang. And then the GT 500 is even better than the GT. HP, price, and performance are more similar within the SRT8, GT, and SS. I know that this isn't the newer engine, but even the 2008 Challenger with the older engine is running 4.7-4.8 and the newer ones are going 4.4-4.5. The Camaro SS, Challenger SRT8, and Mustang GT are all a couple tenths of a second apart from each other and are price relatively near each other. The Shelby on the other hand is nearly half a second ahead of second place. I know the Challenger is very big and the blind spots from that massive rear pillar can be annoying but like I mentioned, the space and seats...

Yeah so a couple things. First off, like some others said, why did they use a gt500 not a gt, which would have been a much better more fair choice. Second, why is it that inside line seems to get such bad 0-60 times for the Challenger. First they had 5.5 seconds, now 5.3, this car can easily do 4.6-4.8, what are they're drivers doing? Also, the Challenger is very practical, with the biggest truck and 5 seats. Plus it looks the most like the original and is the best looking one. Challenger wins!

Was it 120 degrees? Were you at 20,000' above sea level? It's not just the Et that's .5 a second slow on every car but the trap speeds are all 3-5 mph off. Wtf. Shelby is an easy 12.20 at 116-118 car, the ss is easy a 12.80 at 110-112 and the 6.1 Hemi is a 13.0 at 109. Anywhere else in the world.

Wonder how much they were paid by Ford and Chevrolet to rate these cars like they did. I've seen STOCK Challenger SRT8s do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. And yes, it's the 6.1L HEMI of the time this video was made. In the Real world, Challenger smacks both of them to the back of the line. Funny how Ford has to throw in a supercharger to even keep up. haha author withheld so funny. your suv would not any mustang not a 4.0 v6, 5.0 v8 any of them power to weight ratio. your suv weighs 2 to 3 times as much as a stang so you will need 2 to 3 times the power to even get close even. for example to beat a 4.0 mustang with 200hp and 220ft/lbs you will need more then 400 hp and 440ft/lbs but gearing of the transmission and rear end comes in to effect in which case you would nvr get close. and one more engine size has nothing to do with performance

You don't "add a 6-speed manual" to the Challenger; it's standard. At least it was on my 2013. And while I don't dispute the final rankings of these three cars, how they got there is a little strange. Would have expected the slalom to be the Challenger's worst test, given its weight and bulk, but they have it first. And then they criticize its real-world handling, when that actually seems to be where it would have an advantage. Mustangs are notoriously jittery in bumpy corners.

to bad the srt team is going back with the 6.1L when the barracuda comes out and yes it'll be S/C but its only gonna have 570bhp the Camaro has 580 bhp and the gt500 has 650bhp so either way if you like the Zl1 just upgrade the S/C to the same one in the shitstang then get a tune and video the result's bc the gt500 and the zl1 have the same s/c the only difference is the zl1 is a stage 2 and the gt500 is a stage 3.

I was trying to get at price comparison. According to Dodge's website, an 2012 SRT8 392 costs $44,425 alone, without any extra features. A base R/T (Not R/T Plus, nor R/T Classic.) costs $29,995. That's a $14,430 difference. With that extra $14,430, and maybe with any other extra money you've got laying around, you can buy a bunch of performance upgrades and increase it's horsepower and overall performance to the point where it exceeds that of a stock SRT8 392.

How can you call the SRT slow? It weighs almost 3 tons and has 470, hp the SS ways 4500 lbs and has 420hp they both go 180. So if the GT ways less but has 6 less hp and only goes 140 then please tell me how the SRT8 is slow, definatley when the GT is backed by a supercharger. In the last 2 years I've bought a new Challenger SRT8, Mustang GT & Camaro SS/RS. All are great cars. Each has their + &- for visibility but my wife & I don't have any issues, we just adjust to the car.. Visibility: Challenger - best front, worst rear Mustang - worst front, best rear Camaro - middle for both front rear For driving thru the twisty backroads by me the SS is a bit better than the SRT8 leaving the Mustang at the back with its solid rear axle.

The Challenger is just too big. They are replacing it with a far smaller SRT Cuda due out around the same time as the new generation Camaro (based off of the new alpha platform) and Mustangs (based off of the EVOS concept) for the 2015 model year aka mid 2014. Get ready for some real driver's cars bulging at the seams with American muscle. Far lighter, smaller, more powerful and better handling. I don't know about you guys but i like the sounds of that :)

You are comparing a supercharged Mustang to two naturally aspirated muscle cars... no kidding the GT500 takes first. ZL1 msrp 58k LOLOLOLOLOL after putting on the chrome wheels and carbon fiber stripe im at 61k :) now i went to ford.ca, built a shelbyGT500... 58k msrp.. and the way it comes is perfect... already has the nice wheels and stripe :) sorry chevy. and supercharge the 2SS? sorry but i like my warantee.. if you wanna talk warantee free cars, why dont i just droped a built 429 SC in a foxbody, runs low 9s and less then a camaro 2ss :D

@JDYDesigns dont be ignorent, a zl1 camaro is 60k a srt8 challenger is 60k besides if the shelby and corvette are the same price, besides... Do you get a decent trunk out of the vette? Very true, mustang was invented before the others and as far as weight/hp ratio the 5.0 gt would have been the better comparison, which they've made that comparison already and the 5.0 dominated as well. I will admit that ford came out with the 5.0 to be better matched with the other two, because the 2010 gt was weak and definetly behind it's competition. I prefer the mustang only because I'm a ford guy, but am very happy to see chevy and mopar back in the game!! They've all made great cars!

@02mustangguy Ford has always had the Mustang. They've had it before the Camaro, Charger, and the Challenger of the 60's. In the end, it is not doubt that the Mustang is the best. Chevrolet AND Dodge stopped producing muscle cars by the early 2000's because they weren't as appealing as the Mustang. With Shelby and Saleen variants, neither would have survived. It's just a matter of time before the production of the 2 companies' muscle cars stop yet again, while Ford takes the cake.

ford came out with the mustang to compete with the chevrolet camaro not the corvette. Just because ford decided to put more power in their pony car than chevy or dodge doesnt make it unfair. I mean finally chevy has come out with a beafed up camaro (zl1) that has the zr1 vette motor and it's nasty! Think of it like this, if you buy an ss and put the extra money that u would spend buying the mustang then you would have one sick chevy. It's just a personal choice as to what you want.

@bunnsfornunns Granted the cone transitions are kinda lame...but I do have to say that the Challenger is not only the best looking of the three, but seems to handle the best too. The Camaro's fairly uncomfortable on the inside and I'm really not impressed with the steering...the Mustang's got it's supercharger in the top spec model, but up until they got rid of the 4.0 V6 the base model was a gas guzzling turd. Not to mention who gives a fuck how fast you go if nobody's looking at you ;).

Lies the Challenger is one of the fastes and in real life leaves behind a camero in it's dust proven these guy's don't know what there talking about! It all comes down to the air induction systems of these cars. This was not a fair test because the Shelby was the only on with a forced induction system (supercharger) and that is why it wins. Now ford has the 5.0 mustang that beats the camero SS and it is fair because both of them are naturally aspirated (air intake system). The fact is, NO camero beats the 5.4 liter supercharged super snake not even the supercharged hennessey camero. Cameros are not bad but mustangs are just better.

I know, it passed me on I 95 once. I've beaten challenger SRT8, and Camero SS 2011's again as i stated above thrust to weight ratio. Challengers weigh about 654 lbs heavier than my 2011 mustang GT/CS. the Camero weighs about 144~250 lbs heavier... By the way thats the curb weight no occupancy..

if you say so narrator guy. i have a 2010 challenger srt8 6.1L hemi. everyday regular street driving, the only thing that i had a problem with was a viper i came across. the camaro? i didn't see the same thing as you claim here, probably because it was behind me. i'll give it that, it was right behind me close, but couldn't pass me. maybe it was because some punk ass kid has his dad's car out for the night and didn't know how to drive. but i don't see what would have been so hard, gas and go.

@moronsgetout I don't like 1980-90's camaros, much less any cars built in between 1974 and 2009. All ugly, too over restricted with emissions. I love my charger though I can't barely afford to drive it. It has a gas gulping 440 bored to 528 cubes, topped off with a 1,300 cfm tri carb six pack, with edelbrock performer rpm heads and a cam. Routed through a beefed Tremec T-56 magnum, to a Dana 60 packing 3.55 cogs and putting it to the ground with MT Sportsmen 30" tires.

@Surfvolcom77 did u look at the upload date? there was no 5.0L v8 mustang at the time just the 4.7L which only had 300hp so they probably used the GT500 because it had more power to compete with the SS and the SRT8. Yes using the GT500 is a little much, but the main reason the camaro and the challenger didn't perform as well as the mustang is because of how much they weigh especially with a 6.2L in the SS and a 6.1L in the SRT8 as compared to a 5.4L in the mustang

@ChevyFan2203 wrong bro. sorry. in 08 when the super snake first came out, you would have right. in 2010, it was still nose heavy and some performance suffered. the 2011 edition out performs the camaro, and the camaro has a lot of issues with putting power down especially in the wheel hop department. plus, they are notorious for low levels in mid range torque and adequate levels at high end. id be suprised if it does more than struggle to surpass the mustang gt.

@fearlis420 you saw wrong, there has never been a late model GT500 making less than 500 HP, this one in the video makes 540. Know what your talking about before you talk trash. They upped the GT because the new V6 makes 305 HP (only 10 less than the 4.6) and it was time to close the performance gap between GT and GT500. I don't know the mpg of the 5.0 off the top of my head but considering your lack of knowledge shown so far is be willing to guess its not worse than Chevys.

@fearlis420 um, food for thought, 5.0 is N/A. They didn't even have a supercharger for it when I posted the last comment. An S/C 5.0 is more like a +600 HP car. Also, recently its been hinted that once the new computer really gets cracked open the 5.0 is capable of much closer to 500 HP N/A with nothing but a tune. The GT has a beast under the hood that can and will surpass the 5.4 in the shelby. And that's before you even think about an S/C for the 5.0. Keep trying though.

@Chuckles9350 What you forget is that your 5.0 is making 412hp with a SUPERCHARGER, whereas the others are making 420hp NATURALLY ASPIRATED from a 6.2L. Now, let's do some math, shall we? Say I buy a Chevy Camaro SS with a 6.2L Chevy V8 and install an average supercharger making approximately 8.5 pounds of boost, that would increase horsepower by as much as 70%, or around 220hp above stock. Even after the price of new injectors and pump, it's all still less than a POS GT500. Food for thought.

I really do not care any way, but I really do not see how it is fair to compare when you have one car with a super charger or turbo on it and the other two don't. This is really not a fair comparison. My friend has a 2005 Chrysler 300 c and he does mid 13's on the quarter mile with only 345 factory horses and the whole car is factory, so how can the SRT8 be doing around the same when it is actually pumping out around 435 horses and has a different rear end than my friends Chrysler which is not meant for speed , but still flies. I just think that whenever car companies or any of the auto magazines do a comparison, all cars should be equipped the same. Lets slap a super charger on that hemi or on the Camaro's engine and see what actually can transpire. Make the tranny's and the rear ends exact so we can actually see what each ENGINE is actually capable of doing. My opinion it all comes down to what each person likes whether by looks or style or whatever floats their boat they will inevitably, pick which one they prefer.
