Congratulations Jay❤, 1:04 it’s actually the soles of the feet of a full-size human figure, cast of iron and buried head-down beneath the pavement. All that’s showing is the soles. sculptor is Antony Gormley he also did Angel of the North , and nothing on site gives you the necessary information. Which is weird, and apparently intentional. The artist’s decision to withhold this information is crucial, because it changes the piece from visual or spatial piece of art to conceptual art. The concept is something like this: what if you had a piece of art in a public place, but nobody could see it and they walked past it over and over and over?

This is what he wrote about this piece "The question for me is how can you make these bodies work? How can you transfer the representational, traditional function of the statue into reflexivity? Here is the sculpture that I gave the Royal Academy as my diploma work. It has been permanently installed in the Archaeology Department at the University of Cambridge. It’s called Earthbound: Plant (2002), a 650-kilogram sculpture buried entirely in the ground and the only thing you see is the soles of the feet. You can stand on the feet and the sculpture becomes like a materialized shadow. This is a way of activating that democratizing horizontal that we take so little notice of - the ground beneath our feet" Antony Gormley

Congratulations! Interesting to see the differences between the US and UK. I had to complete 30 additional course units, plus pay about $30k for each of my master's degrees just to keep my job.

This isn't standard in the Uk... I spent £10,000 and 4years part-time on my master's degree about 20 years ago. Probably nearer to your $30K in today's money. I don't understand this Cambridge ritual, where they get a Masters without extra work. It's certainly a very unusual thing. Honorary degrees are often given out to people from every university, usually famous people, or people who have done good work in their city, but giving it as standard after 4 years to all graduates... I'm fascinated, I need to learn more about this. (ps, hope you're doing ok over there... miss the Wisonator gang :) ) x

Apparently if you get an undergraduate degree from Oxford or Cambridge and don't do anything ridiculous/are a good citizen you then get a free Masters after a few years. It's kind of a BS thing that isn't taken seriously as a real Masters by anyone in the know, though!

Do you get the degree if you don’t go back?
@TheTimHall
@TheTimHall Жыл бұрын
This is effectively a "snobbery degree". Cambridge thinks their undergraduate degrees are better than everyone else's, so they give away these honorary masters degrees to make that point. Oxford do a similar thing. Not having a go at you J. I'm happy for you and hope you enjoyed your day.
@catsandcrafts171
@catsandcrafts171 Жыл бұрын
Given the amount of work that goes into Oxbridge degrees, it's probably largely true. Not true of all degrees there, and not true of all degrees elsewhere, but perhaps for the most part. I'm always bitter because I did a paltry HND in Mech Eng at Sheffield Poly (not even a university then), and the workload was phenomenal. But most of my friends were doing degrees with a fraction of the workload and pathetically easy to pass exams. It's a shame that a 'degree' doesn't mean the same thing everywhere.
@TheTimHall
@TheTimHall Жыл бұрын
@@catsandcrafts171 Subjects vary a lot. My degree was 36 hours a week in lectures and labs. Some used to have as little as 3 hours per week contact time, but obviously had to do self managed work. I don't think any degree comes easy, they just put different demands on you depending on the course.
