Laws without justice are useless. North Korea has laws. Those laws are meaningless. If one were to play by the book (of law), there is no way the north korean regime of oppression and tyranny (same as the ccp) can be overthrown and meaningful change be brought to that country. The ccp is doing the same thing to China and Hong Kong just as the kim regime has been doing to the North Koreans.

Dac N every country in the world, every people in the world shall decide what they want and how they live! There will be a struggle between contradictions when a USA or uk or some other big bully want to decide how people in other countries should live and govern themselves. Actually these two thugs have been enslaving, killing and bombing and burning people all over the world. China does not allow that. It is coming down these bullies by resisting them not with war, but with developmental work for their peoples marginalised and looted by these western thugs whom shamelessly forced opium on China, killed and burned China! The times have changed. The world people will slowly bring an end and chain your legs and hands and stop you from invading other countries, bombing them, drone bombing them and killing them anywhere and everywhere in the world. Count your days!

When did Hong Kong have democratic rights. Its after 1997, before that, the governors was put in by the British empire and not elected by the Hong Kong people. Since then all governors were elected by hkners and China constructed expensive infrastructures ie bridges and xpressways to link with the motherland. Extradition bill was passed and withdrawn according to the hkners wishes and now they're asking for 5. Hk government gave them a foot but now they're asking a mile with petrol bombs, destruction of public transportations and infrastructures. Tolerance has its limits, its time for the central government to come in to install the rule of law for the good of future Hong Kong.

The British returned Hong Kong back to CHINA, not to Hong Kong people in 1997. If these BNO holders in Hong Kong don't like to be Chinese, we don’t give a damn about them. No one forces them to become Chinese. The fact that they are occupying Hong Kong, a Chinese territory, yet raising British and American flags and yearn for their U.K. motherland is a complete shame on them! Over one billion Chinese will not allow Hong Kong to be separated again. You can call it whatever you want “Imperial China” or “Communist Dictatorship”, we don’t care. Hong Kongers holding BNO passports are foreigners in Hong Kong and the rest of China. So, get the hell out of Hong Kong, period - by Derick Lin.

Excellent explanation, Victor Gao. Freedom belongs to everyone, if one ‘s freedom interferes other’s freedom then freedom is gone. A Country’s top level security is its central government’s top priority, which can not be handled by local government independently. If so then the country can be easily divided and conquered, citizen will suffer.

Good elaboration on democracy and human rights! This should go to both sides but we don’t see we have freedom of speech since riots started last June, if we have opposing opinions, we are being sworn at with hate speech or lynched or doxxed! Fake news abound to the rioters advantage! We like to go back to life in May 2019 where we have the high rank of freedom in speech and trade environment.

It’s my opinion on the people , the most important thing is to live with prosperity in any kind of political sympathy by adapting to equality . It’s not just Democratic or Communists or Socializing, we can’t be at the ideological of each system’s. But it’s how’s nice going with the people first. Since it’s democratic it’s not by laws or real freedom, in society we are, must live by rules and rights likely we play sports 🏀 by the rules and spirit in. 🙏🏼

Bottom line, rule of law and respect of rights. The moment anyone starts to deny the rights of others, it’s over. Even what’s something seemingly peaceful - the occupying of the Central District in HK in 2014, is in a subtle way, denying many people their rights, to earn a living, esp. grass roots. What’s happening in2019-20 is a lot worse. Not only are they moving backwards from democracy, they’re moving backwards from being a civilised society.

Democracy is a natural human phenomenon when a certain level of self worth is achieved. Therefore, true democracy cannot be obtained by fighting or imposed on by external force. Although China has the title of a communist country, it is slowly moving towards a true democratic country. This is due to the whole population have achieved certainly level of wealth. This change and improvement of life make people feel free and liberal. Even though the population cannot elect their own president but they are definitely agreeing with their recent decades of political and economic reform. We cannot say the same for other countries where the population elected their president. The key point is to have the population gain wealth at the same time. If the gap between rich and poor is too wide, we will have different form of social problems like racism etc...this is the problem in the US. It is not about color. It is about wealth. Mainly, the black community lives in poverty most of them in comparison to other ethnicity in the US. If we can close the gap, the racial problem will diminish.

Democracy is not one size fix all. China has her own Chinese democracy like socialism with Chinese characteristics, Democracy with Chinese characteristics. All the countries around the world have different ways of choosing the leader and different voting systems. I have been told that “You Chinese don’t have communism in your blood, look in China and around the world all Chinese practicing very good capitalism. China had no choice to liberate China from KMT tyranny, patriotic oversea Chinese joined Mao army. Then liberate as People Republic of China. Ruled the China with communist ideology till 197-77, Deng Xiao ping re-emerge and ruled with socialism with Chinese characteristics. Well now China is practicing capitalist better than USA, said some western economic professionals.

HK protesters are not democratic. They beat up the public with different opinions from them, destroyed facilities and businesses. They can have democracy but need to accept that other people have democracy too. In addition, their democracy should not take away other people' democracy. Their riots push China into having no choice but passing HK National Security Law.

Never going to happen as long as Western terror groups/spies causing trouble and getting away with it just like all the corrupt cops in USA. I'm calling them Western because of USD, everyone wants to be rich right? They are millionaires since Mafia era. Just like Americans putting Canadian flag on backpacks just to be less hated. No one knows what the Western Gov/Groups are researching because it is not publicly informed. Cultist groups and terror groups are smarter and better since WW2 Nazism. They are not as dumb as street gangs anymore. Modern day China is just following their game now because Chinese in Mao era knows exactly what the Gov is doing. Not anymore. Rule of Law and Democracy are two completely different dimensions. In fact, rules of law can be dictated by an authoritarian leader without ever consulting with the general populace (which is the case in China), or through a legislative process with democratic oversight (as in the several major western democratic/constitutional governments). The one incontrovertible fact/trend that we can see from history is that democracy/representation of the general population have usually been advanced through strife, a willingness to defy the prevailing rule of law, and armed conflict; the drafting and signing of the Magna Carta, the Independence Declaration of the United States, the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, to name just a few. However, we should also not forget about all those unsuccessful attempts, recorded or otherwise, when and where the suppressed would find the courage to rise up against an unjust and absolute authority that shuns and ignores the wishes of the ordinary people, that suppresses dissident views and oppresses the weak. As a lawyer, trained in the west, Mr. Gao, Esq. should have known that a signed contract is a binding contract. To unilaterally flout it is going against the Rule of Law. No matter the context of the contract, one must follow the rule of law to contest it, IN A COURT OF LAW. Progress does not follow from democracy, economic and technological advancement do not derive from democracy. In fact, a benevolent dictatorship would be the most efficient way of bringing prosperity to mankind. The democratic process is by necessity a slow and painful process. China has prosper within the last twenty years because they embrace capitalism, which was supposed to be the antithesis of communism. So please don't attribute economic success, elevated GDP, etc. to democracy. It is quite disappointing to witness this kind of arguments in a public debate.
@cungcung5042

I agree that a good rule of law should go through a democratic legislative process. That's why, like other part of China, HK rule of law is decided by National People Congress, the highest legislature body of China. Just because there are two governing system in China, one can't act freely by disregarding the will of whole nation.

Are you so uneducated? British PM is chosen by her/his peers of MPs elected to form the majority in the Parliament, whereas American President is first nominated by his party {Republicans or Democrats} based on the number of delegates voted for him in each state to run for presidential election, the results of which is by the majority of electoral counts from each state and territories. So, nobody directly elect either a PM or President.

No one will violently disagree to great britain being the old imperial power. But can anyone with right state of mind acquiesce to any country , other than great britain having being the imperial power, once, to be the new one? The speaker is 'drunk' (not by way of alcohol) in that he obviously can't fathom and unaware of the contradictions he found himself in, liken to a blissfully unaware frog being inside a big beaker of continually boiling water in a laboratory situation. Can't find a more finer example of the case of loss of sense of direction and bearings. Especially in the use of the word 'new', which has to, in certainty, means that great britain was or is as 'foreign' as china was or is. Needless to say 'drukardness' plays tricks on people's minds where everythings in faculty all got jumbled up.
