Alot of the lines will go over your head if you don't know what he's talkin about. "The baby gorilla diein for Free" line, he was talking about Freeway. One of the few beefs where I really think it’s a coin toss. They both killed it. One of my favorite back and forths. This wasn’t that far removed from the killings of Pac and Big too. Some people were nervous when this went down. This beef easily could’ve gone legitimately violent, but they kept it strictly music only. Much respect. The beef started with Jay-z. Jada would do a song with an r&b artist then hov would do the remix and the radio would stop playing the kiss version and would play the the Jay-z remix. That was a big issue because radio was the major outlet for new music back then their way no streaming services you had mixtapes or limewire and napster that you could download pirated music but the artist wasn’t getting paid of that. So jay and kiss kind of had a little Cold War. Then kiss dissed beanie on a song with dmx called “hear we go again” and the rest is history.

Every time Kiss would do a feature with an artist, Jay would come right back with a “remix” I forgot the 1st song ( might’ve been R.Kelly ) but the 2nd now was Best Of Me with Mya. That’s how the beef started. A ‘lil history lesson.

On Fiesta remix where Jay says "And after the original it's probably dis" was a sub at Kiss. Kiss was the hottest nigga on the features and Jay was kinda scared to get in that kind of back and forth with Jada. So he gassed Sigel to do it. Both Kiss and Sigel said the same thing years later

This beef started because of Jay Z. Jay and DMX were rivals from day one. They met battling each other. So the Ruff Ryders and the RoC ALL had competitive vibes from the beginning. Plus, Jay was friends with Biggie while LoX were on the Bad Boy label w/ BIG. But everyone who was around back then all say that all of the LoX were tight w/ BiG, but him and Kiss were SUPER close. Then, when BiG passed, Jay desperately wanted the invisible Crown as the King of NY. That’s why he started dissing Nas- who was automatically the King since he was who he was while BiG was still alive. It was even to the point that as soon as BiG passed, Jay ran directly to The HitMen (Biggie’s Producers) and got them to produce his Vol. 1 album using all the beats that were gonna be on Big’s next album before he died. Plus, Nas stepped away from rap for personal reasons. BUT, the album was trash, and at the same time, X got signed and LITERALLY changed the entire dynamic of hip hop music. X was gritty and original and singlehandedly killed the flashy flossing Era of hip hop and was the biggest thing in music period in 1998. Fast forward, the LoX wanted out of Bad Boy and to go to the Ruff Ryders... who were already their managers but turned into a label with X’s success. Once X dropped TWO multi platinum albums that both debuted at number one using the rap style that Jay and Dame said was whack and depressing, Jay quickly dropped the Biggie formula about Versace and champagne and ran to the X formula. But Jay was never considered a street artist, so that’s when he brought in Beans and then State Prop. Once he had those guys, he started taking subliminal shots at the Ruff Ryders but never openly dissed any of them. On top of that, Jadakiss was heating up as a solo artist when Styles P. was locked up. And since Jay couldn’t do anything at all with X bc of the fact that X was the bigger artist, Jay started messing w/ Kiss. When Kiss did a feature, Jay did the remix. And Jay even got Kiss bumped off of a few tracks/ all the while, still taking subliminal shots at them.

So of course, Kiss would fire shots back at Jay. I’m fact, once it could no longer be denied that Jay was dissing Kiss and when Kiss started firing back, Jay apologized to Kiss and the Ruff Ryders. When Beans found out, he was pissed at Jay for not only being scared to respond but for apologizing. And against Jay’s wishes, Beans started bombing on the LoX and on Nas. Then Kiss shot back at Beans on the Here We Go Again track from X’s album where Kiss said, “Beans just make you fart... Kiss really sh*t on niggas.” After the response, that’s when State Prop hot Hot 97 with the classic freestyles. And that’s how it started. It was all bc of Jay throwing rocks and hiding his hand. That’s what Nas was talking about in Ether when he said, “You pop sh*t, apologize, just ask Kiss,”
