I'd never seen one of these before until one just attacked my dog in my house. My dog freaked out and killed it after it bit him. It must have really hurt, because I've never heard the dog make sounds like that ever before. (I immediately got online and looked them up and was marginally relieved to learn their bite is painful, but not venomous.) I love creepy crawlies, especially spiders, but I now have this dead monstrosity under an overturned glass, and even stone-cold dead, I'm terrified of it! It has a frickin' beak and it's HUGE. I don't know how this beast got in the house (probably hitched a ride inside on the dog, because I'd just taken him out a few minutes before the skirmish), but I'm scared to go outside ever again. Not even joking. OMG. [EDIT (3 months later): I posted the above comment immediately after my dog had the run-in with the camel spider while I was still pumped up on adrenaline. I've since calmed down and done a lot more reading and research on them - learning, among other things, that they're not even spiders, though they are arachnids - and I'm not freaked out by them any more. I've seen a couple more out in the yard and found another one in the house last week. It was chilling on a wall, minding its own business. I was able to capture it under a glass and take it outside. I'm glad it didn't run, because then I probably would have panicked only because they run crazy fast, but it went well and the little fella is in the wild again. I wouldn't want a whole mess of them to move into my house, but a little education goes a long way toward making things like this a lot less scary.]

Aw man! Yeah Camel spiders can reach top speeds of 10 mph and their jaws have bite pressure of over a hundred pounds of force. I hope your dog is okay, next time try to help the spider back outside as they only larger anims attack out of fear, bet way to do this with a thin flat surface and transparent cup, perferably a bowl. +violetxoxox Not venomous, but it is poisonous and highly toxic. Has flesh eating bacteria like a brown recluse. If you get bitten it requires 24 hours in hospital IV antibiotics!!

+Mike383HK They're not poisonous. In fact, Camel Spiders are harmless. The worse they can give you is a rather painful pinch. And Brown Recluses don't inject bacteria with their venom. Their venom is hemotoxic, meaning it breaks down tissues and causes necrosis. (Which can lead to an infection if not properly treated, but does not cause the infection itself)

try the black camel spider as a starter its a lot more docile and easier to handle the reason these don't live for so long is many have to be naturally caught and only a few breeders have had them long enough o of had several generations captive bred

I was looking for what spiders sound like cuz I was curious and sometimes a hear what my brain identifies as the spider sound before I find a spider in the room or close to me and I wanted to know what it was. The sound she made was the exact sound I hear. Granted none of the spiders I find are camel spiders or quite as big as her. Mostly hobos and between dime and quarter sized. Sometimes a little bigger.

They are Solifugids, a branch of the Arachnid family. They are also Arthropods, as the family goes Animalia > Arthropoda > Arachnida > Solifugae
