Underexposed files made by nikon cannot be" pulled " by third-party editors. Only in the family, for example Capture NX-D, Capture NX. In any other third-party developers RAW files from Nikon are pulled from overexposed or underexposed - not correct! The dynamic range becomes narrow and fragile. It's a fact!

Apologies for the long post but you asked so... I was a Canon shooter. I mainly shot birds and wildlife and shot the 7Dmkii. I wanted to go full frame but couldn't justify the expense and giving up my focus system and 10 fps. When Nikon announced the D850 I actually thought of jumping ship but held on to see what Canon would do in response such as the long awaited 7Dmkiii. Enter Sony. I started watching all sorts of videos on the R3 and was thinking wow this could be really good. In February my birthday was approaching and I was about to order in an R3 when that same day Sony announced the 73. I pre ordered it the next day! It fit everything I wanted. Full frame, awesome focus system and 10 fps and it did it all better than any Canon could. Now after shooting with it for almost 2 months I sold my Canon and have almost finished selling off my Canon glass. If Canon introduced a mirrorless (or even a DSLR) that matched the Sony point for point right now I would not go back. I feel that Sony is innovating and that Canon crippled their cameras and overcharged just because they could. I personally feel the 73 beats the R3 in all but resolution (I don't use video so I have no comment on it) I would LOVE that resolution for bird photography but the focus system on my camera is better right now. I plan on looking at the R4 when it arrives as I'm guessing it will do what the 73 is doing and beat it along with more megapixels. I just got into portrait work and as I'm sure you can guess it blows away what I was able to do before (The Canon wasn't bad and I got good results but...) The eye auto focus coupled with the 85 1.8 lens is a portrait taker's dream. I only have to worry about composing the image and press the eye focus button. No more click, click click as I maneuver the joystick to get a focal point on my subject!

Dennis Moncla I'm still rocking the 5D Mark III and 1DX IMHO I didn't see enough improvement for me to invest in the 5D Mark IV. I'm soooooooooo tired of Canon with their game of incremental improvements and charging a boat load of money in their new gear. I will purchasing the III and the R4 when it comes out. I don't think Canon will be able to compete with Sony in the mirrorless field. Canon shooters has been asking for years for features that Sony put in the A7III. Canon has been asleep at the wheel and Sony is innovating period!!! Kudos to Nikon in bringing the 850 online.

You are not buying just a camera body but a system. It is perfectly fair to put each maker's glass on each maker's body. This wasn't a test for third- party lenses. If a body cannot resolve with native gear, you probably don't want to buy that system. Being stuck having to go third-party is a big deficit. Pentax K1 being a good example.

I just watched the whole video, and it seemed to me that the Nikon consistently had the best color in still shots. Look at the color in the model's clothes. It also had the best overall image quality in the low iso tests, as I can deal with a bit of grain if everything else is better. I just wish the D850 had a pop up flash on it. That said, the Sony a7 III looks really good for the money.

I would go with the Nikon, being a landscape photographer the camera has a rough life sometimes, I know of a couple of people who have dropped their Sony and the lens mount broke clear off. ( Simon Baxter). I also dislike EVF’s, they have their advantages, would love a histogram in my OVF (technically impossibly). But the results from the Sony’s are great.

Guys this was an awesome video. Super helpful and covered all the details. One thing that would have been interesting is a view of how the cameras perform in other situations, like architectural and the results of cropping. Beyond that, you helped me immensely. I shot with a Canon 5D MKII for years and it was definitely time for a change. I wanted a smaller body because I sometimes go out with a large format film camera to boot. Hauling both the film and Canon gear was crazy. The Sony makes all the difference, and one thing I'll say is that 24mp on the Sony is a vastly different experience and outcome than a similar mp count on the old Canon. You also helped me decide on the Sony a7III over the a7RIII. Thanks! Keep up the great work!

I was at BH Photo Video 2 days ago testing out the af on the A7r iii, Canon 5d mark iv and Nikon d850. The thing that blew me away was how fast the af on the A7r iii was compared to the other 2. The coverage and spread of the af point was very nice and it tracked the people walking around effortlessly. Canon 5d mark iv and Nikon d850 wasn't too impressive. Worked but didn't feel as responsive. With the Sony I didn't have to "focus and recompose". Old style af system with majority of the points in center. Fyi i have been shooting Canon dslr for last 8-9 years. Leaning toward Sony now but might do some more research before moving.

The Sony does 64 and 50. Would have liked to see it to but loved the video anyway.
@RobertoPavan6 жыл бұрын
Those are non-native ISOs on the Sony. ISO 64 is native on the Nikon.
@photojournalists6 жыл бұрын
@roberto - precisely! Nikon D850 (and D810) has a native iso 64 where it suppose to have the highest DR at that ISO.
@DennisMoncla6 жыл бұрын
I think Nikon makes it "native" but it is doing the same thing. Either way I would like to see them compared.
@photojournalists6 жыл бұрын
@dennis Monla - it's unclear what exactly Nikon is doing with their imaging pipeline. But various serious tests shows that Nikon 64 has an added bump in DR than 100. So it's seems to be doing something more. But then again the Sony A7Riii seemed darker. So maybe what sony calls iso 100 is more like iso 64 or 50.

Great review! I see a couple really good mentions in the comments below. -Using the same lens on all bodies for testing resolution would be a good idea. I suggest the sharpest Sigma ART you can find in the center (testing the sensor, not the lens). -Testing Nikon's ISO 64 for dynamic range. -Doing a little bit of noise reduction then downsampling the D850 and A7R III's files to compare them with the A7 III, because to me it's more about how much clean detail you can get with the camera you got.

Nikon user here. I've been using an A7RIII for the last month and, with the vertical grip and controls customized, actually love the handling. And the 24-70/2.8 and 85/1.4 G Master lenses are dramatically superior to the Nikon counterparts, contributing to overall image quality that is a step beyond my D810. As a portrait shooter, it's getting hard to find a reason NOT to choose the Sony over the NIkon. BTW, the Nikon D850's sensor DOES NOT have an AA filter.

Nice work on an interesting comparison! Further to pixel peeping, I think an exercise in cropping the image would help differentiate the 7III from the hi-res cameras. More than composition, the high-res camera are like a full frame and crop sensor 2-in-1 so the cameras can (arguably) make more use of lenses and create DOF options that may not be available at lower res. Take a 70-200 for example, 200mm has a better chance of acting like a 300mm on the high-res cameras. Pull it back to 135mm and for the same aperture get more DOF than using the full 200. Making more use of less lenses can offset the price difference, especially on the long end... not that I care since I'm an M4/3 loser anyway! But it seems to me the ability to crop is the main advantage of high-res. If you are going to add tests, I think the results would be valuable for decision making.

On the topic of exposure accuracy or bias between the Nikon and Sony, and also giving another tool addressing the recovery capabilities in RAW digital files, my Sony A7iii has the ability to fine tune the “Exposure Sandard Adjust” for each of the five metering modes. My Canons do not have this capability and I have never heard any discussion of Nikon having this ability to fine tune your meter bias in 1/6 stop increments for a more accurate base meter reading for each individuals style of shooting. The “Zone System” did not work if your meter was not calibrated properly (as well as your technique in applying it). There is a difference in the manufacturers bias in metering and this is the first tool I’ve seen to make it your own rather than the old exposure comp dial permanently set at -1/3 etc.

One thing that may concern pros or even avid amateurs is the ergonomics. I hand hold my camera for sessions that are 2 plus hours in length. The form factor on the Sony’s is so small that I have heard people complain about there not being enough space between the grip and the lens, mainly the larger 70-200 lens, and their knuckles being sore from pressing against the lens. I shoot a Nikon D850 and love it. I don’t do much if any video and I love the ergonomics. I think all 3 cameras are great and leaving Canon in the dust, for now. For me and my use as a professional portrait and landscape photographer Nikon was the best choice for me. Yes I wish they would have in camera stabilization.
@TheSlantedLens6 жыл бұрын
hey, definitely something to consider.
@UnconventionalReasoning6 жыл бұрын
One thought about the high ISO test: for the high-magnification inset, different magnification levels for different sensor resolution might be more informative. For example, looking at the subject's eye, using 200% for the A7RIII and D850 and 300% on the A7III would give approximately the same size inset image. While it seems like a "have your cake and eat it too" situation, emphasizing the total resolution at low ISO but setting aside the high resolution for high ISO pictures, I think that is how the cameras are used. When a photographer wants to make the best, high-res image, they will try to keep the ISO low. When they are going up to ISO 6400 and higher, they generally want the best overall image, rather than a high-res blow-up. The A7III may still be better at 300% magnification than the A7RIII and D850 at 200%, and it would be interesting to see that. Thanks! For the resolution test, while the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G is a very good lens, it is far from the best lens available for the D850, especially if the budget goes from $450 to $1500, the price for the Sony Planar T* FE 50mm f/1.4 ZA. Of course, it's on Nikon that their 50mm f/1.4G is subpar compared to some of the other Nikon (and third-party) primes. Overall, a great review! And even with these nitpicks, I agree that the A7III is a good choice for many, for $1300 less. Until the price of all the G-Master lenses eats some of the difference, of course. :-D

At 8:06 you said that the D850 has a low pass filter, the truth is that it has no low pass filter. An other poit to view is that nikon d850 seems not to be less sharper in that image, for a simple reason, may be due to some shake in the model face or shake in the hand of the photographer .. etc For sharpness test you must always do the test using a tripod and stationary well fixed detailed object, and for sure try to use the same lens for each as possible as you can. An other important point here, you use the model's eye to make your decesion, and the eye tracking makes abig difference here toward the sony, because the nikon has no eye tracking autofocis. Thanx for your videos ..

The Slanted Lens . Thanks for the reply other reviewers tested and the result was quite shocking that the A7III were almost 2 stop better at 6400 and above. I just want see if others have the same result. Thanks again.

wasn't surprised at the Cont-AF test results since the A7RIII uses the same sensor as the A7RII with the same amount of AF focus points, while the A7III sensor is pretty much the little brother of the A9's, with the main difference being it's not stacked.

Where are the long lenses for the Sony's. So if you need 600mm f4 glass what do you use, an adapter and a Nikon/Canon lens? How well do they track fast moving objects like birds in flight, racecars, motorcycles etc? Can you switch autofocus modes instantly with programmable buttons while shooting? I could be biased as I need and use those with my D850/D500's. When mirrorless can do everything I need better than what I already have then I will be switching. They already can do some things better just not everything yet.

Great review! Your review is definitely a pleasant surprise. I have a Sony a7ii, with some Tameron & Sigma glass and plan to upgrade to either the A7Riii or A7iii. (Of note: I've been trying my 18-35 Sigma with converter for Canon mount and getting surprisingly good resolution even with serious reduction in megapixels). crop-sensor

Thank you very much for your video. Very investing. I don't know much about photography. If you had used a Nikon Lense instead of a Sony (apparently, a 50mm), would the results have been even better for the D850 ?
@TheSlantedLens6 жыл бұрын
lens choice does matter. a good lens is better than an ok camera. a sharp glass with less adorations will give you better results. if you're just starting out, just work with what you have until you feel comfortable spending more money on gear

Thank you for your answer. Does it make sense to change a Canon EOS 100D (EOS Rebel SL1) for one of this camera? I never tried a digital full frame camera. And it is hard to know if there is a big difference for photography (and video).

The video looks very soft even at 1080p on KZbin. What did you use to film it? In addition, Sony does not have a 50/1.4 GM. That's a Sony/ZEISS Planar T* FE 1.4/50 ZA.

@malcolmkermode97946 жыл бұрын
I think the difference in sharpness is down to the lens used. Try it with a Zeiss Milvus or Sigma Art 50mm or 85mm lens and the resolution will change dramatically.

lens sharpness does play a roll in that. we will try better next time!

I'm puzzled : if both the D850 & A7Riii both don't have a LP filter, how is it that the latter appears to show more detail, especially that the D850 has fractionally more resolution? This could be related, but in my opinion the biggest weakness of the Nikon system is their lenses (optical & build quality). The Sony lenses are excellent in both categories

I don't know about video, but my favorite for photography would be Sony A73 or Nikon D850. If you don't need pixel shift, which I find I don't need for landscape, because I can do better with image processing. D850 is then king of resolution, but I find the A73 design desirable. However, I prefer the D850's viewfinder.
@TheSlantedLens6 жыл бұрын
yeah. it's too bad the a73 and the d850 can't just get together in a room and have a baby. because then you'd get the best of both worlds.
@sittieainie98714 жыл бұрын
I personally own an A7III and its really sharp. However its in landscape and architectural shots where the A7RIII really shows its versatility, as you can be a bit more flexible with cropping. Also, it maxmizes your arsenal of lenses by giving it an pseudo-extended reach in super 35 mode ✌🏻✌🏻

The Slanted Lens...the feel in the hands, the construction magnesium with carbon fibre...oh my 😎, (picture quality was good on both even on your video I believe its splitting hairs), used to Nikon s menu system from my D500, I have lots of Nikon glass so to start over...😵. One of the specs that had me on the fence was the continuous exposure view...as it turned out both my D500 and D850 have it in live view...the D850 also has focus peaking for when using my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 and has electronic shutter...so I don't see Sony in my near future.

Really good comparison...but in my country the Nikon D850 is 4,000 dollars for body only..where as the Sony a7iii is 2500 for body only...so as a hobbyist I can only afford the Sony A7 iii..by the time you add G master glass...or similar...it gets pricey..

The video leads the viewer to believe the Nikon D850 has a low pass filter. It does not. The differences in "sharpness" can be explained away by differences in contrast of the lenses used.

Have to agree with you on that. It looks like they are using the 55mm 1.8 for the Sony, one of the sharpest lenses they have, and the 50mm 1.8 for the Nikon... which I own and never use because it doesn't do the D850 justice. Nikon really doesn't have a good 50 for the D850 so I just use a Tamron 45mm for mine. Other than the spotty autofocus I would say a Sigma 50 1.4 would be a good lens to use for sharpness comparison. It's right up there with the 55mm Sony.
@TheSlantedLens6 жыл бұрын
hey peter, thanks for your insight! we try to test the cameras with native glass since they usually are pretty good. your suggestions are helpful though! thanks!

Thanks for the nice comparison. I have the 7R3. Mirrorless can be great if implemented right. Olympus OM-D with its touch to focus/touch to shoot back screen is great. Sony could improve theirs with that technology including eye focus. Also, portrait orientation shooters could use an articulating screen. Sony could extend their focus points to the edge of the sensor. My most used Nikon is the D500 for sports and I look forward to a Sony high end APS-C competitor or a D500M (mirrorless). I would not want to give up the high resolution viewfinder just to save some money, nor do I think that the A9 is worth the money with its mechanical shutter limitations for flash. The benefit of mirrorless giving a preview of the live view effect is very nice and Sony's manual focus assist is great.
@TheSlantedLens6 жыл бұрын
hi sunken branch photography, thanks for checking out our video. pros and cons and you have to meet somewhere in the middle.
@RolandAyala6 жыл бұрын
Hard choice. Mirrorless is the future and Nikon is only just now figuring that out. D850 would be my choice considering cameras alone, but can't bring myself to continue investing in Nikon glass that will need to be adapted to future mirrorless cameras so I've jumped the Nikon ship. As for Sony, I've owned them all the A7 series cameras up through A7RII but I sold them all in 6 months or less. They're great on paper, feature packed, and deliver great technical IQ. But they're a terrible ergo fit for me and I hated shooting with them, Play Memories is a joke, they're not very rugged, and product overall feels rushed to me. I've since moved on to Fuji and am elated with their system and the images they produce. Fantastic lenses for about 1/2 the cost of Sony because less glass required for crop sensor, they're lightweight, well thought out ergonomically, and fun to use. I love the images that come out of the camera much more than my old A7RII and D810. My advice to people trying to decide a system is try out different cameras and don't let bandwagon effect sway your decision making. Pick the camera you enjoy using the most and that delivers the most pleasing images without worrying about technical specs and sensor size, etc. The reality is that most modern cameras are capable of producing great images.

Im ready to sell $6k of Nikon equipment to switch to the A7III, Tamron 28-75(Native) & 70-200 G2 (Canon mount) all for $3800 brand new. If Nikon delivers eye-AF, IBIS, and 4K, then I wont be going anywhere for the next 10 years just like the past 10 years. Nikon's release is gonna make or break them in my opinion not only with me but with quite a few mirrorless hold-outs. On a side note I honestly couldnt care if it was mirrorless or not, todays features is what I crave.

With sharpness your test is flawed, lens selection play a major factor on the results. Next camera shoot out , if possible use 85 sigma art on all 3 bodies. This would help with maxing out the sensor and giving a more accurate skin tone rendering. Auto focus test would still need to remain with native glass for Max accuracy! Great review!

Been a Nikon shooter for many years. I picked up a Sony A6000 and a couple of kit lens for around $550.00 for a trip I'm planning later this summer. Love this camera but not wanting to put too much cash into a new system, I traded in my Nikon D810 for the Sony A7RII. It should arrive later on this afternoon. I was pretty much an even trade at Adorama. If things work out, I'll purchase an adapter that will allow me to shoot A Sony lens mount lens on my E mount Sony cameras. Still going to hold on to my Nikon D 500, just love it.

I owned the Nikon D850 (got in on the first batch of pre-orders) and sold it. It had several major issues. The number one issue was that face detect would get nose, forehead, or cheek instead of eyes. I switched to a Sony A7RII and it was the best decision I've made in years. Eye AF, small, lightweight, EVF shows exposure before image is taken, lenses are typically sharper than Nikon's, silent shutter mode, no need to extensively calibrate each lens for accurate manual focus, slog, better color rendition (in my opinion), sensor stabilization, etc, etc... I realize the Sony A7RIII has better AF, longer battery life, and dual card slots... but I don't miss any of those features. The difference in AF performance isn't that great. The A7RII comes with two batteries instead of one, so I've always been able to shoot all day without trouble (I get far more images than what they rate the batteries for). Even when I had dual card slots available, I never set the second slot to record a backup file. I've had an issue with a memory card just once in over ten years (and I was able to get the images from the card), so I don't bother taking extra precautions. Anyway, I spent the price difference between an A7RII and an A7RIII on an extra lens. The A73 and A7RII are about the same price now, so I think the A7RII would be a good option for those that want a higher resolution. A higher resolution generally makes the images look sharper and you are able to crop in extremely close (I was able to get an amazing shot once by cropping in when I didn't have the proper lens available). Overall, it's not that important. The file sizes are larger, which means you need a lot of memory on your computer to work on multiple images at the same time (my computer couldn't handle it until I put in more memory). I've also heard that higher resolution sensors can cause more motion blur, but I haven't noticed it in my images...
