Totally agree... For me the beauty here is in the strangeness of what we see : a cloud that looks perfectly half liquid half gazeous. It is hard at the very start to comprehend fully what we have in front of us, because of its strange aspect and very particular physics. The frightening aspect (for me again) is about how it's moving both so gracefully AND quickly. And I didn't even mention the spread ! A volcano is directly perceived as a frightening thing because of its purely explosive nature. Maybe we don't "see" at first sight the evidence of danger with ice despite its dangerous mechanical nature (more than the thermic one from an explosive volcano)... Even if anyone reasonable enough would still realise rapidly what's happening, if you know what I mean.

@miizzy006 ай бұрын
@Mxmic0101 you are correct. You can not outrun an avalanche. He survived because the flow of it went down the mountain to the left and all that hit him was the "spray" that came over the mountain side he's on top of. What he got was like a wave splashing against a sea wall your sanding on. IF it would have come up that peak he was on he would have been buried in there and no one would have ever found him. In this situation behind the boulder not inside of them is best. If he would have been buried inside that something could have landed on top and he would literally be in a tomb. Jumping into a hole for safety in an avalanche is never going to be the best answer. You want to be as near to the surface as possible.

@miizzy006 ай бұрын
@numbingcactus153 ya for sure. I see what you're saying. And that was most definitely my first thought as well. Him just standing there made him a target of those rocks that came with that spray. That's why I said behind a boulder and not in them. That front wall is what is going to deflect and protect not that back one. Since you have no way of knowing if it will overcome that location it's best not to trap yourself. If you are found you'll be at the bottom of it all with a very specific dig out and that all means you're less likely to be out in time. Think about having a shovel and trying to get to him when he's in a hole of narrow rock walls you can't dig through. Not only that- he's at the bottom of potentially 5 6 ft of snow ice and other rocks and boulders. Impossible dig out.

In the United States, about 26 people die in avalanches each year. That’s actually a pretty large percentage (about 17%) of the more than 150 people who die in avalanches each year around the world. Thousands more are buried or partially buried but survive until rescued. Snowslides, the most common kind of avalanche, can sweep downhill faster than the fastest skier. In the mountains of the western United States, there are about 100,000 avalanches each year. And compared to most other countries the U.S. has a high number of skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, and hikers endangered by avalanches. In addition to the danger of being hit by or buried in rocks and ice, avalanches are also dangerous because they can produce a powerful wind capable of blowing a house apart and killing a person. Furthermore, once the avalanche stops, it settles like concrete. Bodily movement is nearly impossible. Buried victims who avoid being killed in the avalanche may suffocate while awaiting rescue.
