I actually bought the S5 when it came out, so far I am happy i did! Of course, i was anxious about Autofocus, mostly because a lot of KZbin guys, such as Camera Conspiracies, make a living off talking about it, and looking at older Panasonic Cameras this really was a big issue (a lot of older Contrast-detect systems, Sonys NX- Camcorders are even worse than the GH5) What convinced me, in the end, was the Testing by DP-Review Gerald Undone Kai W and others, combined with the Value as compared with other offerings in the market. - Having had it for 2 months now: Absolutely flawless for stills, not a single out of focus image, and no annoying flashing when shooting. And yes, the infamous Pannasonic Video AF does work all but flawlessly in real-world all-rounder usage, I personally had 0 issues with it. Look: is it the fastest most reliable Autofocus: NO, of course not, and Panasonic does not claim that either! But it has none of the old DFD Pulsing, works perfectly for still Video, and except for V-Log at the highest settings is really snappy and reliable when shooting handheld outdoors! Thus far the only time I had any footage that had an out-of-focus issue was when I accidentally left it in manual focus mode after taking a picture! Unless you do nighttime sports with 120 fps this will do the job reliably! Reviewers on KZbin obsess over the AF because it's so easy to visually convey to an audience, but even with the GH5 AF a lot of people chose it despite that gigantic shortcoming! To me, it comes down to the overall value proposition, this camera comes with features way outside its price class! Especially with the Preorder Bonus (the 45 mm Sigma prime), the Value proposition is amazing, compared with the Nikon z5 that costs just a little less or the z6 that costs more but has real issues this was and likely still is by far the best "bang for your buck"! V-Log, the same Sensor as the S1H (the low light quality is really unbelievable), great Software that works reliably and has a lot of features. Surprisingly good in-camera Audio should you ever need it and the 20-60 mm kit lens makes a lot of sense (the IBIS makes up for the missing OIS on the Lens) The only things I wish they had done differently would be a Full-Size HDMI and maybe another programmable button on the front.

For AF, +3 responsiveness and 0 speed works fine for your walking videos. Maybe lower the speed for a dramatic slow focus pull, or to lessen the Panasonic AF pulsing. The blown out skies are terrible to watch. Don't turn the saturation an contrast down too much, just enough to prevent clipping. I think I would use the auto I-dyn function to help out in changing light conditions. The 20-60 does not to appear to suffer from warpy corners. Hopefully panny makes a pro version of that lens with a constant 2,8, whilst still keeping is a reasonable size and weight.

In my tests the best S5 settings for Human AF: AF Speed -2 AF Sensitivity +3.
@crystalpulseTV4 жыл бұрын
I'm testing one at the moment too, the AF has been super on point for me - Nowhere near the results you are getting here! Really enjoying it, really surprised XD I have it on +3 Responsiveness and 0 or -1 speed. That seems to a sweet spot and then it's a beautiful huntless refocus 9/10 times! In tough conditions it does not perform anywhere near how the Sony handles. Similar to how the new Canon line performed for you actually. The 4K crop in certain settings keeps catching me out though - Probably my own fault for not being on the ball with the custom setting I'm in. I like the way the buttons feel on it, they're a nice experience. The touch screen is wishy-washy for me. I love the nice eyepiece thing. EVF hasn't felt like its lacking in quality. Flippy screen is great, I've been looking at the GH5's one for so long that this one feels like magic. Shutter button took a bit of getting used to, it's a bit hair trigger at times. I'm using the 24-105 f4 lens, that's heavy but all in all a pretty comfortable experience etc! Key question though, should a GH5 user switch? I can't answer that yet... Probably not, but it is a really lovely camera that they would definitely fall in love with, I REALLY like the S5, it's pleasant! Looking forward to you reviewing it more, I think if you end up warming to it, then I'll splash some cash on it!

Tbh the auto focus from the S5 in this video was better than the canon auto focus on the R5/R6... Not even joking. Yes there was outliers, the slow Mo with the squirrels was bad.. and with the wrong settings it pulsed when everything was set to super responsive... But especially when just walking around it looked rock solid!!!.. in day to day use it looked significantly better than the R5/R6!!! For canon I mean that's beyond a disaster a Panasonic having better video auto focus!!!.
@professionalpotato47644 жыл бұрын

I sold my MFT gear (Panasonic G9) a few months ago and went Full Frame with the A7III. I have to be honest, I wished I had gone for the Panasonic S5 even with that poor autofocus. I just don't enjoyed those Sony bodies. The IQ is great but it's missing something. Maybe it's the ergonomics, or the shit menus. My G9, except for the sensor and and AF, was so much better. Sadly I'm too invested in Sony now to switch again.
@goodgremlinmedia27572 ай бұрын
I replaced someone as cinematographer for a project. He had a A7III, I have an S5. He always completely rigged it out, and with just a kit lens at max settings it wiped the floor with the Sony. I must say that S5 looks great. Autofocus is bad but it has its moments. S5 is better then A7c because of better IBIS, it has 10 bit video recording, better viewfinder and it has option for 5K recording. Dual native ISO should be great but I heard that A7c also has secret Dual native ISO. S5 has better KIT lens then A7c (20-60mm vs 28-60mm). On the other hand Sony has more lenses and L mount lenses are way to expensive. When S5 was on preesale Panasonic gave sigma 45mm f2.8 for free for every S5 that was ordered so back then for 2000euro you could get S5 with 20-60mm lens and sigma 45mm f2.8 and that's better then any other offer from Sony, Canon or Nikon. Like I said, S5 is great but it has some room for improvement. First improvement should be autofocus, second inprovement should be higher video bitrate and ALL-I recording and the last thing i would really want is for third party lens manufactors like Viltrox or Samyang to make autofocus lenses for L mount.

Basically, Panny invented a new focus mode: the OOOF ! (I'm sure you got it right... "Ourageously Out Of Focus" , yeah) Actually, it did pretty decent most of the time, it's really more of an inconsistency issue; I guess once you're sure you're detected, it avoids the biggest moments of shame, & Responsiveness +2 and Speed 0 or -1 depending on the situations, would do ok to avoid too much fast/apparent pulsing.

Well picking up either a used s1h or an s5 for the v-log and low-light and dynamic range. A7siii was out of my budget. Was looking at x-t4 before that. Well with Panasonic we know it's going to be manual focus, so will have to learn that. Really only downside. Just stop down to f/11 or f/16 and you avoid both ND's and the need to be paranoid about autofocus. I just wish it had a better EVF, may still go for a used S1H for 600 bucks more. Not exactly light, and not friendly as a vlogging camera to replace a gopro. But still a very good camera, and for 31k nok used, or 3500 USD not a bad buy. Of course can pick up a S5 for 2950 USD with kit lens. We have a 25% VAT or sales tax here of course in Norway. Guess Camera Conspiracies suffers from similar problems over there north of the border.
