Phase detection pixels can cause more noise or banding depending what you are shooting. Take a look at A7M3 and Nikon Z6. They use same PDAF senor and they both has banding noise on darker areas. These artifacts can cause degradation of exposure latitude and dynamic range. This is very important when you shoot in Log. Because Panasonic is focusing on video quality for their cameras, I'm not very interested on PDAF in video hybrids. Maybe they could make high resolution still cameras with PDAF.

If they only add some phase detections AF pixels on the sensors... Lumix cameras (S and G) can be the perfection according to price as hybrid cameras, good sensors, lot of video functions, nice menu, etc. Just few points as focus assist, I mean: the main focusing system can be the advanced DFD system base on Contrast Detection but with addition of a basic PDAF can be more consistent during video. The opposite of Sony or Fuji for example, with the assist of CDAF when needed but not on par with Panasonic as a contrast detection AF if "engaged". The Lumix sensors btw are the most "clean" because there is no AF pixels on the sensor, no interpolation, so very clean expecially when recovering exposure, less banding etc.. but the current tech is good enough to allow a lot of PDAF pixels with no problem on the image quality. DFD system is not bad idea but you need to predict subject distance physically to be smooth (with a system like Canon DP), not just evaluate it based on the sensor image reading and move the autofocus back in forth.

I really liked your videos until I realized that you are talking solely from your perspective as a volger. What I also realized after spending almost a year researching for the perfect camera is that it doesn’t exist. Each company has its strengths and flaws. From Canon paralyzing their own mirrorless cameras in order to protect their C line camera and Sony’s colorimetry even in 2022 is somehow debatable. I moved on from Canon to Panasonic 3 years ago, knowing that at AF system in video quite sucks. What I did get however is an amazing dynamic range, great IBIS, multiplie codecs and so on. I won’t suggest S line cameras for someone who constantly uses a gimbal and works alone. For that you can take Canon or Sony and have fun. For interviews or any kind of shoot where you either work with a focus puller or can work out your own focus pulling, it is a winner in terms of color and versatility. In those kind of project, you won’t be bothered if a lens cost 500 or 5000 because you will probably rent them. Leica, Panasonic and Sigma don’t cover enough ground to compete Canon, Sony and Nikon alone. Creating a new optic eco system take time, just look at Canon. 4 years since they launched the RF mount and they are also quite behind in comparaison to E mount that has been building up their lens catalog for over a decade. You always rise many good points but I think that you should also define the to what kind of use your reviews and criticism is aiming and sometimes try to review it from a different point of view.

@@tomslittlecorner Don't even start me with the X-T4, that my second camera ( actually I got it before the S1) and all the BS I see in so many channels about this camera amazed me. We are at the point I feel only Canon or Sony is good if you listen most ( but not all) youtube. But that not only this channel that a lot of them.

@@nicolasletellier6162 thank you. I'm tempted to buy the S5, just waiting for the price to drop a bit. I think that smartphones got us used to good and very fast autofocus and people is looking for the same experience in mirrorless cameras, they don't want to fiddle around with settings, they just want to turn on the camera and shoot. To me, if the AF is good for stills, it's enough, since i'll probably record video in MF most of the time. I'm more worried about lens choice and price for this system, coming from an aps-c everything looks bloody expensive.

as of right now it seems like the l mount alliance isn't that great but lumix needed a full frame lens for their new cameras and they needed something, its not that the lenses are that bad it is more like they are new and there aren't many options.

The problem is that we have three brands of cameras here, and not one of them care about phase-detect AF, which makes investing into native lenses questionable - at least for the time being. With the m43 system we have Olympus, who cares about phase-detect...oh wait a second...

The best way I personally describe Panasonic autofocus is it's like an escort mission in a video game, but the game A.I. is absolute dogshit. Think Ashley from Resident Evil 4. At times it works seemingly great, until it doesn't....breathing incessantly, focusing on random shit in the background even though you're in face priority mode, etc.

Unfortunately there's no perfect camera. The R5 is seriously lacking in DR in video mode which is a definite disadvantage in many situations and also has other issues. The overall image quality of that 8k is lovely though if you can handle the time limits.
