I had been saving for the purchase of the 6DII, but since it didn't meet expectations when released, I upgraded from the 60D to the 80D, purchasing the Canon EF-S 10-18mm to make up for the loss of sensor size I had hoped for. When I made the choice, I was briefly disappointed, but I got over that very quickly once I started using the 80D.
@skakdosmer6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, as far as it goes. The problem is that many people watching videos like this and see the noisy pictures they all produce when pushed to the limit, will think they are all poor cameras. And then we get to read comments like “crappy camera” which of course is nonsense - they're all great cameras with little differences. For instance I'm sure they'd probably all outperform my 70D, but that doesn't mean much. Everybody loved the 70D when it came out, and the camera hasn't changed a bit since then: It's still an absolutely stunningly wonderful camera! Just to put things in the right perspective.
@Camerahoarders6 жыл бұрын
I see you point but "the right perspective" is a subjective thing. "Great cameras with little differences" is a term used to describe entry level models (around $500). At $1900, 6D2 must do better and those who spend that kind of money _will_ push these cameras to the limits. 6D2 is made from existing parts and technology Canon had at hand. It is crippled on purpose not to undermine 5D4 sales but people are not stupid and this market segmentation will bite Canon in the ass one day so hard they will not be able to comprehend what happened.
@skakdosmer6 жыл бұрын
I can't very well disagree about that. (Except for the part about the term “great cameras with little differences” being restricted to entry-level cameras). But I think Canon will simply have to do better pretty soon, or they WILL be run over by Sony. And they must be fully aware of that, of course. Personally I think they've waited to see how this mirrorless thing would develope, before getting too involved. And now that they must be sensing the general wind direction, they must be on their way with something. But as even Canon cannot just decide to make a super-camera and then deliver it the next day, that something may not come this year. Let's hope it will.

Great review, one of the best comparisons I've seen. Many canon 6D ii reviews say the camera is disappointing but do not go into more detail. This shows where Canon really fell short, they sacrificed dynamic range for low light performance. To make it worse the low light isn't very good. I have an 80d and was hoping to make the jump to full frame, but unfortunately, the mark ii is not a worthy upgrade and there is no other canon in my price range. Forced to wait until the 90d.

For those going oh crap or yea about what camera they got. Just know these test are blown way out of range setting wise. That being said, the best camera is the one you have with you. Better tech helps, but having the skill to utilize the camera to its full capacity will always trump someone compensating for a lack of. Enjoy your camera purchase and don't think too hard, at the end of the day they'll are good cameras.

I have had all 3 cameras. If you are shooting 5 stops off with all the technology we have these days, you are really missing the mark and it shouldn't matter that much. I watched a ton of these videos about how much the 6D mk II sucks, but bought one anyways and I love it. The 6D original sucked so bad at focusing it was a joke. I got the 80D for the video features and articulating screen and loved it, especially for it's focus compared to the 6D. I was on the fence forever on the 6D Mk II even after I sold the 6D original for $760 a couple months ago. But the bottom line on it, is that it is AWESOME!. I love it. If the 5D MK IV had the articulating screen, I would have got it, but I'll take that screen over a slight improvement any day of the week. I have the 16-35mm 2.8 and love it on my new 6D MKII as opposed to just on my 80D with it not as wide. I like having my 70-200 2.8II on the 80D to get more zoom now and the bokah is great. No regrets for me. I also bought mine new grey market on eBay for $1379 back only, so I have no complaints at that price either as opposed to current retail of $1900 (no warranty, but I haven't had a problem with my others, so live dangerously! I think a lot of us obsess on these techy stuff instead of just shooting already!!! :)

If you obsess about technical features, and pixel peep then don't get the 6Dmk2. For the rest of us, it's a brilliant camera. I've had mine for a few months, and it does what I want it to do perfectly. 70d-80d Crop frame wasn't cutting it on the wide end of 16-35 for me, video and photography, and I wanted the quality of those L-lenses. 5D and original 6D doesn't swivel, and EOS-R is way over-priced, so we are where we are.

@Phil Jones65 the best UWA aps-c I have is the Canon 10-18mm. It is a lovely lens, but unfortunately it is variable aperture. I also have the Tokina 11-16 f2.8, but it can't keep up focusing videos, and it flares like crazy, at night. Nothing I've seen UWA aps-c can touch the quality of the 16-35L with or without IS. Maybe you know of something that can. If so please share. :0)

Colour rendering of 6D classic is really awesome
@khaleel_as6 жыл бұрын
I own the 6D mark ii. I expose correctly and in some situations you have a lot of shadows no matter how well you expose your shot. However, the 6Dii tend to have a lot of bleeding and noise even at 100 ISO with proper exposure when bumping up the shadow in some cases. It also struggles a lot in terms of dynamic range. I totally hated that camera and I am about to sell it for dirt cheap money just because I cannot enjoy what I am doing with this camera.. Important NOTE: I shoot a lot of golden hour / cloudy days. When I try to take a full body shot of my subject using 50mm lens, 80% of the time the image is soft and my subject seem to be out of focus. I don't know if this is a camera issue in terms of focus or just in terms of quality, but again, I get a lot of quite soft images when my subject is further away from me.
@hywel31432 ай бұрын
Thanks for your interesting and balanced analysis. Sensor quality, not camera feature set, should be paramount in any camera review, but it is all too often glossed over. I'm unsure what extreme cropping really proves for real world photography. However, on the subject of colour rendition I think your analysis was accurate and incisive. As a 6D Mk1 owner I have compared 6D images on high resolution platforms such as 500PX with the Mk2 and the Canon RP mirrorless. I did this to help decide whether to "upgrade" either to the Mk2 or RP (because the RP had the same sensor as the 6D Mk2.) From my own comparison I agree that the 6D not only has the better colour rendition, but it is rendering shades and hues of colour that are not actually picked up by the 6D Mk2. So you can't recover these subtle colours in post production from the 6D Mk2 Raw files. So I share your disappointment, because the Mk2 and RP have really useful extra features such as better focusing and a tilt screen. I think if Canon had simply reused the sensor from the Mk1 in the Mk2 they would have produced a truly excellent DSLR!

I just got a 6D. Was looking to replace my older Canon DSLR with a full frame. My deciding factor was price and image quality. The point of a camera is to record images. The overall technical differences between the two are not mind boggling so I couldn't justify spending twice as much on the MKii. 20 Megapixels is more than I need. Dont need or care about the swivel display. Dont care about video specs as I rarely record video. Shoot mostly landscape and stills so the upgraded AF also was not high on my mind. In Short, I cannot justify the difference in price. IMO the MKII is not worth twice as much as the 6D.
@Hubieee6 жыл бұрын
Despite the drawbacks I am very happy with my 6D mk II. It has comparable image quality to my 70D (ISO 3200) at ISO 10000. I am the kind of photographer that doesnt raise shadows by more than 2 stops, so I guess I dont depend on that extra 'dynamic range'. Meanwhile I enjoy having a flip display and good ergonomics with Dual Pixel AF and that for 500€ more than a 70D. Not twice as much but rather 60% more expensive. Else the dynamic range is superior at higher ISOs. At bottom line one could say, that Canon surely should have innovated more with the 6D mk II's sensor, still the camera is a great one.

I've some difficulties to make a choice: staying with APS-C sensor or moving to Full Frame. I currently own a 70D and very happy of it, I think I will wait for the 7D Mark III and take a decision. Like for many people, this 6D mark II is a deception: outperformed by a 80D in dynamic range. Shamely a 5DIV is far too costly for me.

Good test of extremes but let's be honest, any of these 3 cameras is capable of producing stunning results. All 3 perform better technically than say a 5D mk1 and mk2, but the 5D mk1 and mk2 produced some of the best images in the world for 12 years. The 5D didn't get worse, these cameras just got better. Any improvements from 2017 onwards are hard to spot in normal use. It's 2019 and I'd happily buy some used 5D mk3 bodies for professional work.

Hey Camerahoarders, you're right about low light performance. Personally I would definitely prefer 80D (mainly because I own one). However pushing ISO to 25k... I would not push it even to 1600. Full frame - 3200 (barely). So don't play with it unless there is no any other (even creative) way :D BTW, the biggest "feature" as canon says - 80D and 6Dmk2 are tradeoff cameras between photo and video world. Anyways, nice review!

Nice test Its only in ISO 100 right? But from what Ive seen in DXO, the 80D and 6D Dynamic range become basically the same befor ISO 400 and gets better than the 80D at ISO 800 and above. And that is usually how I use it for events. But its only the theory. I would like to see the reality.

But the noise recovery is only tested with low ISO. Because if it's tested at ISO 400 or above, the results might be a bit different. The dynamic range of the full frames would probably be better than the 80D. That is probably where most event photographers shoot at. Rearlly do we photograph at ISO 100 or 200. Well more mpx is usually worse regarding high ISO results, fewer pixels on the same surface means the pixels are usually bigger which should mean better-looking noise and better color rendering. I've been using 6d mk2 for a while now, and In real life scenario I don't see any difference between my 5dmk4 or 1dx regarding image quality, also for right results you should have used canon raw converter cause camera raw will do its own basic color rendering depending on the model, and each model of a camera will have different renderings and should be adjusted accordingly to get optimum colors and contrasts. super kanal :) pratim :)

I LOVE my 80D. But it has limitations because of it's APS-C sensor. Still a beast, that outperforms many other far superior cameras in the experienced hand. The only reason I am upgrading to full frame is because I want weather sealed lens, but also want to use that lens to its fullest. Only complaint about 6d2 is the scrunched up AF points. I do like that the 6D2 can expose at a lower ISO. I frequently have issues with too bright or too dark with my 80D, but mostly that is do to my subject matter, which is often in a shadowed or dark area with bright highlights against stark shadows, and I am attempting to pull detail out of a tiny subject that is often occluded by differences in highlighting. Any camera regardless of brand and quality will struggle there. Exposure bracketing, ND filter, max stop, long exposure FTW.

Tell difference if you stay static same distance...crop sensor apsc camera canon 1.6x math depend in camera body sensor and focal length fstop iso. 32mm vs 50mm primes on different ff and apsc body similar image...but on zoom lenses and get closer or far away change body position or spot distance you can get same image size equivalents. Example 32mm on 16-300 or 18-400 zoom lense on apsc equal 50mm ef prime on ff?? Without switching lenses like primes from 50mm ef on ff body to 32mm on apsc body. Is this crop factor 1.6x 4k or hd correct? Focal length fstop iso plus distance from object of composition? /×2 /×2 ×sq./()sq. Crop factor to full 1080 hd apsc or ff? Not just 4k? The new 8k ibis canon r5 no crop 4k and 1.09x to new canon r6 ibis. R rp ff crop factor and m50 apsc 1.6x.

Having all 3 cameras and experience with alot more, I really wonder how you go that mismatching color reproduction. Have you tried again with updated RAW codec? Have you checked the camera profiles and made sure they are the same?
@Camerahoarders7 жыл бұрын
Yes, camera profiles are the same. There can be visible difference between what a certain profile extracts but in each case results were different between these 3 cameras (actually 6D2 and 80D are almost identical, 6D is different). Various converters could also make a difference (usually they do). It might be possible Canon DPP can extract more info than Adobe which I use. But with my editing workflow 6D2 requires extra effort to match 6D's output.
@MiGelPhoto7 жыл бұрын
I use Adobe as well. Which profile did you use with the 3?
@Camerahoarders7 жыл бұрын
My usual workflow is based on adobe standard profile which I find to be the best one for me and my 6D over the years (and for many other cameras as well). I did some experimenting with other profiles now that you pointed it out and appears 6D2 images respond better when used with Canon profiles; stronger saturation and better color separation but also add too much of contrast for my taste and in case of some profile/photo combinations global color tint which needs to be counteracted with other sliders which in turns screws up everything. In the light of that I would tend to modify my conclusion from "6D2 has weak colors" to "6D2 has weak colors with Adobe camera standard profile but can be better with other profiles (and converters) and workflow techniques - you mileage may vary". Personally that changes nothing for me as I would need to modify my workflow what I'm not particularly keen to do. It is also possible next ACR version (I am on 10.1 currently) will bring some improvements - it happened before. Anyway, this clearly shows how hard can it be to test photo gear as so many variables are involved. I read a good blog post somewhere (Roger Cicala I think) how its actually near impossible to get perfectly objective conclusion in some gear comparisons as its near impossible to get perfectly identical focus point on both cameras even with the same lenses, how certain sensors and firmware changes things slightly, different software renders different results for no obvious reason etc.
@MiGelPhoto7 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right and that's why I am not to keen to publish tests myself. If I do, I tend to do it as a "practical review" and not as a 1:1 comparison. Regarding the profiles, if you got a color chart you can pretty easily make accurate profile for your camera yourself, which I did in the past. However, in recent times I simply use (Canon) Camera Standard as profile for all my Canon cams since I feel it gives WAY better colors (esp. skin) than Adobe Standard. It has more contrast though (which I like) so one could pick sth. else like Neutral. Or just leave Contrast at 0 instead always have to pull it up in Adobe Standard. I did not yet had the time and drive to test the colors of 6D I and II against each other since I never figured there could be a difference. Now I will do it though soon...
@SShaBazzz6 жыл бұрын
MiGel well to be honest. The 6d is an anomaly of a camera. It's truly a hidden gem. I don't think Canon can actually out-do the 6d1 because it's colors and image quality competes with pro-level cameras. I can easily tell the difference between the 6d1 and 6dm2 which is crazy to me because it's not as if the 6dm2 is bad. It's just the 6d1 was so great. And people tend to look past it because it's only an entry level camera.

I also own the original 6d was furious, initially, with how different the two cameras capture RAW images. However, I took extra time to approach editing and image refinement with the 6d2 and I greatly prefer using it over my 3 other Canon DSLR’s. Canon certainly intentionally handicapped this camera and being the fool who spent $2k on one, I wouldn’t recommend paying that much. It is a very useful well rounded stills camera at $1300-$1500 (refurbished prices on canons site, and yes it was $1299 around Christmas) with its Dual-pixel, viewfinder focusing system, battery life and overall real world usability. If you are considering this camera, rent it. Try it. Or, get a Sony. ;)

Great comparision, clear and balanced, no nonsense. I am a bit curious about the color difference for 6D mk ii, is that using Adobe Camera RAW/Lightroom? Have you tried Canon's own Photo Professional Software, to see whether it handles the RAW conversion better and if colors still are that desaturated?

The only reason I would upgrade to a 6D II from my 6D classic would be for the flippy screen...

The 80D will be the best bang for the buck camera for the next 2-3 years. Actual used price 750€ is just unbeatable. Even tho there will be a 90D someday the price tag will be to high to touch the 80D.

What is the best DSLR or MIrrorless camera I can get today for $1000-1500?

A little late but probably Sony a7rii for sure and that’s coming from someone that only shoots canon.

Ok now people will disagree with his but I hate my canon 5D1V for the same reason as the 60 ii which is the colour of the raw files and I have used all the right profiles. So much work in PP to get it to where I want it. I am considering selling it and getting the 80d until the next mirrorless come out. I am a portrait photographer and are only interested in skintones and colour. Anyone use the 80D for portraits?

You bash the 6d mark ii completely unfairly. Most of the time I think it's the best or second best. On the bookshelf it has much better dynamic range. Sure it had a flat picture, but that's also nice. Jacking up the shadows and showing noise means nothing. No one should be doing that to this degree on ANY camera. Everyone bashing the 6d mark ii is doing so in weird controlled environments that don't make any sense to begin with (cranking shadows, exposure, or ISO). Everyone who loves the 6d mark ii reviews it in real world settings as one would use a camera instead of 'test' a camera. If you want to buy a camera to use in normal real world scenarios, why would you listen to tests like these? At 3:45 you call the 80d as the only one 'usable'. No they are all not usable because they are all not an honest picture taken by a half intelligent user. They are test images to find out how bad a camera is on it's max settings...

Thank you for another good review. I have been considering the 80D and the 6D Mk II. My main intetest is the dual pixel AF but also low light performance. I will use the camera for video and astrophotography. Perhaps it is impossible to find a camera that excell in both areas. But of those two cameras which one would you recommend?

This was one of the best reviews I’ve seen. You should do this with other cameras. Maybe you have I will check out your channel! One thing.... I’m pretty sure the customer that’s going to buy the 6d mark 2 is for video use with the dual pixel af and the swivel screen. So you will ask what about the 80d performed better. They will be wanting Full frame.

Yet another You Tube review that illustrates how Sensor size is far from everything. I switched from Canon back to Olympus a year ago, and couldn't be happier with the results I'm getting from the four-thirds sensor in my OM-D E-M1.

Ciao!
