I purchased a 6D from KEH last week and I couldn’t be happier. I have a couple mirrorless cameras that I plan on selling now. I just enjoy taking photos with it this camera. I bought the 50mm 1.8 and plan on buying the 17-40 and the 85mm 1.8. I feel like those are the only 3 lenses I really need. Thanks for all the recommendations! It’s because of these videos that I now own a 6d and 5d classic and have no interest in spending thousands of dollars on the latest camera! You’ve saved me so much money!

Thats great to hear Jordan, I hope you will continue to be happy with your setup. One day a time will come when you will probably want something newer, just take this with you...dont sell this gear, you will regret it one day, take it from someone who has been down that road. As have most of the people commenting on these videos.

@Jordan Duncan I have loaded up so much old gear from facebook marketplace. I just watch stuff I want until it's been up for weeks to months then make an offer, or snap up bargains when they come up - but have to check every morning for canon gear listed in the last 24 hours to get the bargains first I picked up a 6D with canon 20mm prime for $200AUD - I already had a 6D and didn't really want a second one, I just wanted the lens ha. I just watched that one for ages then offered $200.

Same here! I have down?/up!-graded from mirrorless to 5D classic, and I'm extremely happy. I have the 50mm F1.8, and I also have a couple beautiful M42 lenses that unfortunately have only very limited use on the 5D as in infinitiy / far focus the back element hits the mirror (ouch_!), so I decided just not to shoot with them at all, as I want a nice long camera life... sadly though, as the Asahi Super Takumar 50mm F1.4 is just so much nicer than the Canon nifty fifty - it really eats the nifty for breakfast, lunch and dinner... So that's pretty sad. Even with that edge though the mirrorless can't catch up to 5D with the nifty... So, I'll have to save for a serious native EF Canon or Tamron glass.... the quest continues! && I'm also super tempted by the 6D for low light scenarios...

I love the 6D. It's simple, fast autofocus with the center point. A beast for Portrait. Cheap. The most important thing is it makes you focus on photography. Modern cameras have too many features that a photographer doesn't really need.

I could get behind this. I LOVE my 6D and my 5D classic. There’s character to the files, and I tend to use it much more that my 5D MKIV. The only time I’ll use the 5DMKIV is when I’m shooting weddings, or going to heavily depend on cropping. Also, the dynamic range on the 6D is pretty amazing. I’ve pushed my editing to almost 3 stops before I see the files fall apart. Some of my favorite files have come from that camera. 6D + 40mm pancake + 1/8 - 1/4 diffusion filter!

I seriously think the 1dx that can be had for under 1k…and the 5dsr is the biggest budget powerhouse combo you can get and for less than a single R6 or R5. Can cover sports or stills easily.

That 40mm 2.8 is a sweet lens. On the 6D it's a great all-around lens. The downside for me is that the 40mm works so well on an old IR converted 20D that it pretty much lives there.

Such an excellent video. I own both cameras--everything you have explored here rings true. 6D colors are lovely right out of camera. There is hardly any other camera to which it can be likened. It reminds me of the child of the Canon 5D classic and the Leica M8. And that is very good thing indeed. The RP sure is a bargain considering its capabilities. Professionally, however, I would never choose it over the 6D. The 6D has served me well in event photography and I've never had a memory card failure so the single card slot is a thing that seems fine. Very good comparison video.

Really good video. A friend of mine recently posted a question on Facebook asking should he upgrade his Canon 6D to a Fujifilm XT2? My question to him was what is your Canon 6D not doing for you that the XT2 would he really couldn't answer the question, so then I asked him are you chasing gear? Then he said that he wanted a better auto focus system. I quickly responded, well. You ain't going to get that with the XT2. Then we talked about using just the center point focus on a 6D and recompose. It amazes me how many people do not realize this simple and old technique. I suggested to him if autofocus was his main goal, then the RP would be a better value but at the end of the day the 6d center point focus gets the job done. He then responded well. I went to the camera store and they talked me out of the rp and suggested the R5. I just rolled my eyes. He wanted to keep it under $1,000. Then they tell them the RP is no good in that the R5 is the way to go. Pretty sad if you ask me. Then they tried getting them into a used XT2 with a kit lens for $1,000 lol. So I went to his house and brought with me and XT2 and the 60 mm macro and we did a session together. Needless to say, he is sticking with the 6d and was glad he didn't bite on the XT2. This is not to say the XT2 is a bad camera, it's just a different camera and did not align with his needs compared to the 6d. In conclusion, this is what I like about your videos. You break things down in such a way that you potentially save people thousands of dollars.

I can kind of see why people look away from the 6d probably due to the focus point layout its just one of those cameras you dont appreciate properly until you compare it to other cameras. then suddenly it becomes more clear. Ive had 2 6d cameras both at the same time and sold them both, worst decision i ever made regarding gear.

I believe I'm not the first to point out that... *6D has 11 AF points* , so it is "advanced" compared to 5D\5DII\550D and others... while it matters not, BC the really usable is the centre one. And I confirm it is fantastic, especially in low-light. I own 6DII and not sure the centre point is as sensitive as on 6D (but compensated with all 45 being cross-type (with few f/8-capable in the middle) + vast DPAF capabilities in LV). When I got 6D for review (it was my second full frame after 5D Classic) I was amazed by centre point AF and high ISO performance + normal Auto-ISO (unlike, say, weirdy 5DII). For the price 6D is great and feels much better in hands than RP. Not mentioning bigger battery, better ergonomics, enormous lens variety without adapters and no freaking EVF lag during shooting (BC it's got flawless OVF)... Sure, if you need video with DPAF, flip-out screen, clean HDMI, EYE-AF and stuff... RP is your choice. It is also good for the price.

You are quite right its is 11 not 9, i dont know why i thought it was 9 still after having used it so much, probably because they layout is similar and you are still mostly stuck with the middle focus point. Incredible camera as you say, i prefer it a lot over the RP but the RP is the more practical camera if you want to do any video. Ive added the little canon grip to the RP and that makes it very comfortable and nice to hold. Thanks for all the additional input it too.

Fascinating, thanks Martin. I've only had my 6D for four weeks or so, but thus far I would say it is a fine landscape, street photography, portrait and still life camera. The sensor always delivers realistic results, with rich and yet natural looking colours. I enjoy just using the centre point on the AF system and then recomposing, having come from a manual film camera. Used in this way it gives consistently great results. The metering system works fine just left at the default Evaluative mode. Overall it must be one of the best used full frame DSLR camera buys out there at present...

Trying to decide between these very two cameras, thanks for making the video! Determined to go full frame. The 6D is very tempting due to it’s low price ($250 USD). As an amateur that wants to improve, coming from a Sony Nex 5t (mirrorless)… I’ve become accustomed to seeing the exposure before taking photos. I’d like to learn the exposure triangle better and the thought of getting such beautiful images straight out of the 6D, breath taking. But I’m hard pressed to give up that exposure preview. It’s nice to push the shutter with confidence! Going to use this camera for family photos/video and tempted to jump into some real estate photography and perhaps help with an occasional wedding or event. At the current price point for the 6D I can pick up a decent lens, less that lens with the RP (used $600 USD). Might have to stick with the kit + nifty fifty for a while haha. I’m still pinching myself that full frame is even in this price range. But just enough of a gap here to make this difficult. Any advice?

I sold my RP and bought a 6D. 2nd time with the 6D. Great colors, fun to use BUT the moment you put it on a tripod, you miss the RP. And seeing exposure before you shoot is also a plus on the RP. Using the 6D is a little more difficult and takes more thought and attention. If I did events all the time, I would want a more sophisticated focus system than the 6D’s. Maybe the 6Dii. Not so much the RP because controlling the focus point was one of my biggest issues. Maybe an R (has a joystick as far as I recall).
@kevinl1492
@kevinl1492 Жыл бұрын
I am replying to my own comment. Canon just reduced the price of a refurb RP to $599 in the US. So I bought one. For events I will now be using a 6D and an RP. I am making an effort to learn how to really use face and eye tracking (mixed success so far - moving the focus point to the face I want to track takes more time than focus and recompose - but still working on it). In bright sunshine, the DSLR OVF is better but the mirrorless technology is sometimes very helpful. The combo will be very effective.

Thank you for the comparison of the two cameras, especially the raw files; it helped me to know I made the right choice for me by purchasing the 6D Mark ii. For anyone that is curious, I've owned the original 6D and currently use the Mark ii version. I would say the Mark ii is a cross between the original 6D and RP. The raw files from the 6D and Mark ii when it comes to color rendition are virtual identical. I found the original 6D low light performance to have very slight edge on the Mark ii, which is probably due to the Mark ii having 26 megapixels compared to the 6D's 20; as a result the noise becomes a little more noticeable on the Mark ii. However it is nothing a little software tweak can't fix. If anyone is looking into the original 6D for the image quality, I would suggest the Mark ii with the upgrades and better ease of use. Thank you again for the information, I am sure it will help others to make an informed choice.

I love all this stuff and am interested in trying these old bargain DSLRs & comparing their RAW files, but I used to shoot with a Nikon FE and subsequent manual & AF film bodies back in the day. I always think it must be a real culture shock for people who have only ever used mirrorless and then come to these 10-15 year old DSLRs which don't automate everything for you. It's well worth it though, when you consider £350 for a 6D or Nikon D700 vs £800 upwards for a new mirrorless & converter for your old lenses.

As an old film guy focus and recompose was SOP. I still find I do that more than anything. I have come to really like the AF on my 80D, but I still have no problem going right back to the old school on the 6D. I've commented on enough of your videos so it's no surprise I am a big 6D fanboy. It's just a hell of a workhorse of a camera with lovely images and an ISO beast. It's a very usable camera. Looking at various R series I would have to step up to a higher model to replace the 6D and I don't do enough anymore to justify changing EOS to R. And I do appreciate the battery life of the 6D. Not knocking the RP as it seems a good little camera. It's just hard to find something that makes it truly worth spending bigger money when the gear I have is so capable. Glad to see you are still making videos that give usable information for the various levels of photographers.

Interesting, Martin. I've been considering the RP as a route to mirrorless for a while and already have a 6D. I don't video (if I needed to I would use my phone for that - its just easier) and don't think the RP really offers enough for shooting over my 6D - focus/recompose is fine and for any action shooting the centre focus point works great because I mainly shoot horses in competition, just keep the centre point on the horses shoulder. The pics from the 6D just look great with wonderful colours to boot. Its a super camera for "enthusiasts", I wish I had bought it 10 years ago! Maybe I need to raise the budget and start aiming for R6 or R5!

I have the 6D also, your comments summarize my thoughts too. I watch several KZbin travel channels, and they use phones for their video main camera. GoPro's for when they are moving, keeping the video clips at about 4 seconds so you don't have time to nit pick the details. Seems like the most expensive tool they own are the drones for special angles. Canon has totally dropped the ball as far a offering video feature in their lower end cameras. I wonder how many Canon users have left Canon for Sony over the video features. They still are using the cripple hammer on the R10, not offering log files. Why they dont compete with the Sony A6400 and ZV-E10 for video is just crazy, they are losing so many customers.

Tony Northrup uses about 10 Canon RP in his studio to do his talking head videos. They are cheap, autofocus well and require minimum post processing, so can efficiently get videos made. He states that most people are viewing his content on phones, or laptops and on those platforms, people dont notice the difference between the 1080P and the 4K. If he is outside the studio, he will use the Sony A7SIII, for the IBIS.

We are cherry picking a bit anyway: I have both a 4000k shutter release 5Dmkll and an RP and love both. The 5D has those "Wow" moments, when the light is right, but sometime I find the RP to be more "polite" about color rendering. The only thing I don't quite like completely in Canon are the Greens which always seem always a bit Yellowish. The sky on the other hand is outstanding: I call it Canon Blue and really you can't find those colours anywhere else. The 5Dmkll has it more, the RP has it but slightly muted. No camera has ever ever matched the 450D sky tones through: those sky and clouds pictures were work of art, straight out of camera! I wonder why that sensor was dropped after just one iteration and I didn't like the 500D a bit. I will add that the 5DMkII sees colours the RP do not: I was testing some blues with a tint of green in them, the 5D somehow was able to make the tint distinguishable, but the RP was just changing them to straight blue, completely another colour form what I was able to see. Panasonic, Olympus and Nikon also was butchering the tint in the same way as the RP: Initially I was thinking of lack of Bit, 8 vs 12-14, but the 5D can see the difference and has an even older sensor.

About the battery dropping the charge overnight: I have the M50 mark II, which is the APS-C little brother of the RP, and it has the same issue! The battery drops quite a bit of charge overnight. I never measured how much exactly, but the drop is enough that the camera dies on me when I am making videos for my channel, versus having enough charge for the videos when I use a freshly charged battery. Briefly, it's a nuisance. Especially as the battery compartment can be accessed only when I remove the camera from the mount.... likely similar scenario for the small RP body as well. On the other hand the 5D classic battery lasts ages. I can leave it in the bag for half a year, and it's still ready to go for ever. Once I had a battery left untouched for 6 years, and it still had plenty of juice.... : ( )

The one and only reason right now is that it would be so much easier to take the camera with me while traveling. But I'd still use that same camera for paid assignments too. Maybe would get the Canon 50mm 1.2 later.

I agree with a lot of what you say. Ive used an 80D with all of my events, with sigma 17 to 50 2.8, because it gets the job done and ita easier, lighter and cheeper..... BUT..... As Ive been occasionally integrating the 6D in to my work flow, Ive noticed the photos, colors, contrast, skin tones, etc...Come out so perfect and nice right of camara, that I dont even know how to edit them. I get scared and think about not including them in the final seleccion because of possible issues with clients, because of how much nicer the look. The thing is .... I take from 6 to 10 hours editing events from an 80D, but take little to no effort editing 6D photos... All I would have to do is get better at changing lenses fast and using the 80D on zoom ranges my 6D lacks at the moment because I work with only three full frame prime lenses. So if making it a bit difficult in those two hours of event, could help me sava 6 to 8 hours of editing, that would definitely be worth it. I only thin this would be true about photography with humana, because of the skin tone issue. Others types like realstate are probably not worth it . Thank You for the video. Very informative :)

Pre Covid I did quite a few events (1 or 2 a month). I used my 6D and a second camera. The second camera varied but at one point I had the 80D and a Sigma zoom. In the end I sold the 80D and Sigma zoom and bought another 6D. Having two identical 6D’s really helped in shooting and in editing. The subtle differences in controls between the 80D and 6D caused some problems and also the 80D and Sigma zoom combo images just could not keep with the 6D. With two 6D’s, I usually had either an EF 28mm or 35mm on one and an EF 85mm on the other (later on I added an EF 135mm which is an incredible lens). I rarely had to carry both at the same time. I would go back to where I was keeping my gear to swap cameras as required. I have a big event coming up next week but only one 6D now. I will use a Lumix M4/3 camera with their excellent Leica 15mm lens (30mm FFE) for wide/group shots. A second 6D would be even better but Not a current option.

WOW! Thank you so much for bringing this to attention. I have been saying this for years, in fact ever since the 5DSR generation which I believe is the last Canon breed with good "canon colors" as we know (or knew) them. When I first got the 5D MK4 I was really upset with the colors. Dull, cold and simply...not Canon. No matter how much I tried I never got them to fly. And since then I have been waiting for Canon to reverse-engineer their own oldschool color process. So far I see no evidence of any progress what-so-ever. Files are clinical and...meh! Need lots of work and they usually don't end up where I want them. I need LUTs for that and still not close. Clearly I am not a colorist nor is that my intention. People tend to say "it's digital, get any colors you want" but miss the fact that sensor design, filters and the CFA make a HUGE difference, especially in RAW files. Ironically the same people think color science is only for JPEG.

Regarding the 6D battery life I came from the 90D so to me it was "worse" haha, but it still lasts multiple trips which is really great, compared to my first DSLR the 650D which basically had to be charged after each outing. I really do miss the articulating screen though. I make do, but every time I have a strange angle I think damn I wish I could just pull the screen out. I would totally pay a camera modder who could install one. Somehow I fall in love with the 6D more and more as time goes on. I know I'll have to move to mirrorless one day, when all my DSLRs are dead and it's too difficult to get another one, but I just have no reason to upgrade. Maybe not ever?

I wonder why they change colors each time if most people consider earlier Canon colors the best already? Or is it that it is not possible to get exactly same colors anymore in modern sensors? For example would it be even possible to get 5D classic or 6D colors from Canon R5 sensor? Or is it that every color engineer wants to leave his/her own mark and adjusts color to his/her own taste? I would love to have option where I could simulate any earlier Canon camera color with my current Camera. For example I could decide to use 6D colors on my R5 or 1D Mark IV if I wanted. Or even just any of the 5D series.

I think its because its different teams working on cameras and im not sure but im not convinced they know how to do it again. Things like putting a worse sensor in the 6d mark ii than the mark 1 can only come from different teams working on different projects and simply fulfilling the brief they are sent. Unless they are completely sadistic. Actually its probably that.

Cameras like the 6d and the Markii are absolutely brilliant. You cannot replicate the overall feel of these camera bodies. That being said I would never just own one of those cameras. I would use them as secondary cameras to get specific looks and shots. I need two card slots for work and very very fast Af ability that these cameras do not have. Also focus and recompose you tend to need to shoot a lot to get those 1.2 1.4 shots. Once you are into the Rp o would consider the EosR which is more capable in many ways or of course going further into the R6. Although I HATE the R6 files. Colors are horrible compared to Nikon z6 or z7 line. I would say in the mirrorless market the best for color and file quality is the Nikon z7 the Sony a7r3 GFX 50sii those specifically gave great quality output and I’ve tested everything. I have the RP andI agree it’s easy to use. I also have the 5diii and a 6d. For some reason my version of the 6d is a bit less sharp than the 5diii. I’m not sure if it’s the “creamy” quality of the 6d. I have yet to get a second 6d next week so I will compare that new unit to my 5diii. I have to say though that the handling and feel of both 5diii and 6d are so much better than the RP! I also like that I do not have to worry about changing the battery that much compared to the RP. Between RP and 5diii, the color of 5diii is much better. Between 5diii and 6d, I’m not sure yet as I think there is a ‘veil’ of some blurriness on my 6d that affects the overall impression of the photos.

Well I was really considering going the Canon R route lately, but this new BS of Canon blocking third party lens makers to make lenses for the RF system is so disgusting to me that I am running from canon...even if it was very tempting to go that route and use EF lenses with the adaptor natively....but even the thought of thinking that the nice RF lenses aren't even an option for me in the future (since they are too expensive for me) makes me even more furstrated with canon. The famous Canon cripple hammer effect. So I am staying with the Sony and/or Fuji system that is for sure....Would you consider to review some older Sony/Fuji bodies in the near future? @@MartinCastein actually i learned how to do it and all my batteries on all my devices keep they charge even if not used for long periods. like most manufacturer of rechargeable batteries recommend i do the same thing every time and it never failed. when you for get the battery you recharge it for at least 12h and the first time you use it you discharge the battery completely. it"s that simple, even if batteries don't have a "memory" anymore they do require an initial charge and full discharge before you start using them. this work for all batteries i've ever used always keeping the batteries charged. when not in use would be the best to use less charge cycles. the first time you let it discharge completely, after that you recharge them to full charge even if they were not used that much. it's better to always keep the batteries full and put them on the charger after each use. anyways try it and if i am right you will have a better life, a better battery life that is. ;) took 500 pictures with my RP today and it was left with the battery in my bag for the last 3 days. battery was full when i turned it on. original battery that came with the camera when i bought it 3 years ago. i don't use my camera as much as you obviously but i work with power tools and i "break in" my batteries the same way and they always keep their charge through week-ends and even weeks in the tool box. i would like to thank you for the videos about the 5d line and the 6d. i will probably buy a 6d just to get that creamy canon look with those lovely colors. torn between the 6d and the 5d mkii because on the used market it's bit cheaper. keep up the good work cheers!

Martin, I couldn't agree more with your findings. That is why the 6D should be called the 6D Classic as a worthy successor of the 5D mark 1... It deserves that seal of approval because the files have great IQ but also "personality". As a side note, the output from the 6D is basically identical to the R6 in my casual tests, nobody could tell the difference in real-world situations, as you said DXO charts are useless. The RP, well, I love mine because makes the job of taking product shots of my wife's jewelry business super easy, the files look sharp and colorful, and the client (my wife) is happy, so do I! But I know the output looks kind of generic and it is more difficult to fine-tune the RAW files than the 5D/6D ones. By the way, I bought 4 Artman spare batteries and they work great and last quite a bit, only downside is they don't show the % remaining, says full all the time until they simply die. Cheers!
