Inanc Tekguc - Inca Most would prefer to use manual focus but I do know some professionals that are starting to rely more on the AF from the 70D - it is that good. The STM lenses do not make any noise in either mode but they are not much fun to manual focus with - they are electronically operated so sometimes I see a slight lag when using manual focus.

For years I used the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 It isn't the best lens but it was a good value and did me well. Consider the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8 - 4 or the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, both of those are very good values.

Buy it with the 18-135 STM- that is the best starting lens and budget lens. Other choices include nice primes for Canon which I have a video about.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
Oh yes - the 70D will be a sweet upgrade. Grab it with the 18-135 STM for easy silent shooting but put a nice prime on your list like the 50 f/1.4 or the 40 f/2.8 for lower light and lightweight work.

Hi Larry - I didn't have the 70D while I was renting the Sigma lens. It is an excellent combination because you are taking Canon's best crop sensor camera and putting the best crop sensor lens on that sensor. I have some shots taken with the 700D and the 18-35, i'd be happy to share those if you send me a message on Facebook, inked under the video.

Are you saying you find the battery dead after 250 shots and 30 minutes of video? Video is a battery drainer but you should be getting better results than that. I agree if I was going backpacking for a week I would try to use the LCD as little as possible but for walks around town and landscapes/macros it is a really nice way to compose images.

In day to day photos the difference is very slight. In low light the 70D is better and on board flash exposure is better but none of these differences are large. I would not upgrade if image quality is all you are interested in.

@TobiasGelston11 жыл бұрын
Don't confuse the two features though -You can magnify live view for focusing and I agree that is extremely useful. Digital zoom is turned on or off and only usable during video and you are either zoomed and recording or not zoomed and recording so it is not useful in that way for manual focus work.
@UtopiaStudios11 жыл бұрын
I bought the T5i (my first DSLR) knowing the 70D was going to be awesome, but it was more expensive and as a beginner I need to learn the basics, which the T5i is great for, and then some. The only feature I probably would miss is the new auto focus improvements in live view, which looks amazing.
@RonAsor11 жыл бұрын
also forgot to note that I'm used to work with the top lcd and viewfinder for realising my settings (top lcd for drive, af servo modes, metering modes. etc and vf for iso, shutter, dedicated level&gird, aperture af points control [AWESOME!] light metering etc..) I shoot mostly raw anytime so I dont mind leaving it at auto wb since i can change that in post editing. Its basicly lightning fast manipulation of all of the camera settings on 2 main zones. cheers ;)

When I first watched this video shortly after you posted it I definitely felt discouraged because I had just bought a T5i. Then after watching your final review of the 70D you made up my mind and I quickly exchanged the T5i for the 70D and am SO incredibly glad I did. Even though I was and still am a beginner I felt myself progressing quickly enough that I felt I would "outgrow" the T5i quickly. Not knocking it, but for me the 70D is perfect!
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that followup - the 70D really is a lovely camera. How do you feel about the extra weight/bulk? I am only interested in user opinions.
@jtwebb7211 жыл бұрын
CameraRec Toby I definitely felt the difference. I found myself relying on a camera strap much more with the 70D than the T5i. That said, I adjusted quickly and don't mind hand holding/carrying the 70D any more. However, the added functionality & capability drastically outweighs any inconvenience. In addition to the kit lenses (18-55, 55-250) I picked up a 50mm 1.4 and LOVE it because I shoot a lot inside houses in low-ish light. Once I save up the scratch I am REALLY tempted to pick up the Sigma 18-35 but am also intrigued by the Tamron 28-75 you mentioned. I know you can't beat the Sigma right now but wonder if the Tamron might be a more flexible option. Really, I want something that I can capture friends and kids while indoors. I also shoot a lot of motorsports but since that's mainly outdoors I haven't felt limited by the 55-250, yet.

I had around 11% or less left in the camera after the footage, yet again, the overall feel is that it drains quicker than the 60d and from time to time the heat coming from the area of the sdcard is higher than the 60d as well it also depends if all the shots were taken consecutively or in a broader duration, you can shoot way above 1500 images if all taken in a burst, but if you widen the interval, you could get around 600 with dead battery

I watched this and several videos on the 70d vs t5i. I think that after using them both, I went with the 70d. I believe the focusing to be MUCH more responsive on the 70d. I do believe the rendering engine is noticeably better and with both in automatic mode with the same lens, I felt I always got more sharpness and a better overall image. I also like the WiFi with the 70d to use my phone/tablet as a remote control. I feel in the class of touch screen cameras with a swivel screen, the 70d is the camera to beat. It will be a great camera for years in my book until I can justify full frame. Even then, I really have to say the responsiveness of the touchscreen in manual modes makes learning photography fun and really gives confidence to a budding photographer to really learn the craft. Both are good but to me, the 70d was worth the money.

I bought the T5i a week ago because I would like to take pics of my kids and landscape etc. I thought T5i could do just fine for me anyway I am not filming sports. However it didn't nail sharp images indoors (under lower light) of my not-staying-at- the- same- place children very well, so I start to think maybe I should exchange it for a 70D. The main concern is if I could handle the weight and of course the budget. I would like to know if 70d really produces better quality pictures? Is it really that good? I love your video by the way.
@juantapia897210 жыл бұрын
Hello, I also have a T5i, and I find it rather easy to focus with it. I don't understand how to automatically focus, so I always manual focus. It has become second nature. Having the 70D won't make the images any sharper. You're shutter speed should be at or higher than your focal length to prevent blurry photos.(example; having a 50mm lens, make shutter speed 1/50 or higher. Also, a great technique for landing super sharp images is through the view finder, while on manual focus, touch the screen on the magnifying glass and manually move the focus ring on the lens until you decide that is as good as its going to get.

Hi Toby, For a long time been using a Fuji 8000. Not really a pro camera but have had a few nice pics. Likewise a Fuji 5500 which was my first digital camera where I achieved really good results for the time. Now interested in getting some serious short film/videos done and by all accounts the 70D certainly seems the best to date to combine stills and videography hobby in one piece of kit. Never been a serious pro camera person (slight colour vision limitations) but I enjoy it when I can.

@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
+Draunamou GoPros are great if you plan to do lots of action orientated stuff but for general video they are fairly limited with small sensor and wide angle views. I think a decent point and shoot would be better. Older Sony RX100 or some Canon.
@Penguinsrock1249 жыл бұрын
PhotoRec Toby Ok, what we do kind of has action, but we'd mainly do slow motion, but we wouldn't really do too many videos together, so does it have comparable quality to the Canon T5i or other cameras like that?

+Draunamou I have a gopro silver and really want a DSLR, i'd recommend you get a dslr if you plan on doing anything that isnt just action shots where youre underwater, biking, or cant use a DSLR. Using a gopro for other things where you are trying to focus on anything can be really tough because the angle is so wide. start with a gopro because its cheaper but having both is a must.

You mention a lot about focusing with video but will the 70D focus in non live view mode significantly quicker than say the 600D/700D? I shoot motorsport and find the 600D focusing isn't that impressive even with a 70-200 F4, I end up with a lot of blurry shots when cars and bikes are coming towards me even on AI Servo mode.
@merasanam10 жыл бұрын
70D focus system is much improved over to 600D. Still, you will need some fast lenses as well (meaning fast to obtain focus). You may also use a higher shutter speed.
@JamesOversteer10 жыл бұрын
I bought the 70D in the end and with my 70-200 2.8 it's a HUGE upgrade over the 600D. Thanks for pitching in though. I'd recommend the 70D any day.
@andyb-kd6so10 жыл бұрын
why would you be using a 70-200 with a t3i??
@merasanam10 жыл бұрын
andyb6200 It may look like a non-sense. The 55-250mm is better suited for a crop sensor body. But if you shoot sports, you'll find the 55-250mm to be extremely slow for such work. The 70-200 will focus in an instant. Such lens will indeed cost 3x the price of the body. And it will consume much more power from the body. Most of the energy from the battery goes into lens focus, not the picture itself.
@JamesOversteer10 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "why would you", why wouldn't you? The glass is far more important than the body. My 600D was fantastic, only thing that limited me was the single focusing area and the 3fps. The 70D is a massive upgrade but the 600 paid my bills for a while..

hye toby just want to ask.. now im currently use canon t5i but sometime get miss focus using 18-35 f1.8 sigma and always focus hunting when i low light.. so my question is.. it is good focus system in 70D using viewfinder? compare to t5i because im thinking to upgrade to 70D or 7D

So strange that the 70D doesn't have a mic input. So now forced to go DOWN to the T5i? Is there something "just" above the 70D that is film/cinema-centric?
@StingrayOfficial10 жыл бұрын
Why did I read somewhere it didn't have direct audio in? That WOULD be a strange feature to leave off. Thanks for the info. back to the 70D!

Im looking into buying one of these two cameras. This would be my first DSLR. I would prefer the 70D, since I do a lot of video, but its just a lot more money than the T5i. If somebody would please help me out, it would be appreciated.. Thanks!

+osxBoeing - HD Aviation & PlaneSpotting The 70D hands down. I had the T5i and went to the 70D... a world of difference. Much better picture quality, better video. It is worth the difference in price. Go to Adorama.com... no shipping cost and no sales tax unless you live in NY.
