hi pegg - T5i with 18-135 or the 18-55 will be great. Both those lenses get close enough for food photography. You should consider adding an external flash or getting a nice prime lens if you want those very bright/clean looking images. How is the light in your kitchen? good daylight?
@photorectoby

I plan to. It is not same sensor though- it is the D7100 sensor which is even a tiny bit better and without the AA should be very sharp.

Hi V - sorry for the delay. The Nikon is not THAT much slower, it is just a fraction of a second slower sometimes and I know there are people photographing sports and other action and have been quite happy. The Nikon does do best in lower light.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 11 жыл бұрын
HI Rhys - I mean a little of both. Out of the box settings the Canon looks nicer but the Nikon is capable of doing better in low light when shooting manual, tweaking white balance AND using pretty much any lens other than the 18-55. The 18-55 is the suck- I hate to be that harsh but it really holds that camera back and if you get a nice prime lens on there or even the 18-105 but primes are best :)

This might be an ignorant question - but on track days are the cars on the track moving fast? If so that right there would sway my pick to the D7000- it has that higher speed that the D5200 lacks. I found the D5200 annoyingly slow at times though it does produce lovely images.

I don't have one right now but it is on the list to do. first, did you follow my moon settings on the blog? Any good 135 moon pics you have seen are cropped as I covered in my crop to zoom video. For night time shots you want to open your aperture up as much as possible and raise that ISO up to 800-1600, noise really shows up in shots that are underexposed and I think that is what was happening to you.

I have a fair number of crooked shots too, this is one of the many reasons I love Lightroom, it is very easy to correct slight slants. Otherwise you can buy hot shoe levels or just carefully eyeball it as best you can before taking the shot.

For D5200 I like the SIgma 17-70 f/2.8-f/4 lens. On the T5i I really like the 18-135 STM but if low light image quality is your primary need you could pick up a prime lens with a very wide maximum aperture like 50 f/1.8, 85 f/1.8 (great for indoor auditoriums) or that Sigma 17-70 would also be helpful or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. Lots of options. I am happy to chat more about which is most useful for you.

I normally watch the occasional review videos of cameras here and there on KZbin, but yours take the cake by far. You are a quick speaker, and you pack a lot of good detail in these things that most people would not bother talking about, like nit-picky setting change differences that would drive me nuts had I bought the D5200. Hats off to you. Keep the reviews coming!

Sorry - I have been traveling, I am also not getting enough comments that it is difficult to reply to all of them. Did you make your choice? Both are excellent cameras, hard to go wrong. I give points to t5i for user friendliness and paired with 18-135 STM it is great. D5200 is great but needs better lens than 18-55 to really shine.
@photorectoby

Get the 18-105 and the 35 - that's a great combo. If you really want more zoom add the 55-300.
@photorectoby

Manual focus is your only option for the D5200 or record audio off camera so that the mic doesn't pick up the focus noise but it still isn't as smooth as the STM lenses on the Canon side. Seems silly to me to keep both around - Nikon isn't that much better than the T5i. How about sell D5200 and get 70D which is fantastic at focus and photos- I have recent videos covering.

You can do a more limited version of exposure simulation in Nikon. I have a movie about that a& d would be happy to share if you send me a message on my facebook page, linked under the video. T5i does fine in lower light, just not as fine as the D5200. The T5i does offer that continuous silent auto focus during video if you use an STM lens. Or you can manual focus and use a prime lens that is going to give you better low light images/video. The AF is not that fast though. 70D will be faster.

Go for D5200 body only(you already have a good 18-105 lens) and the 50 f/1.4 - that makes more sense to me than switching to the 700D and having only the 50.

The nikon does offer continuous autofocus too but they don't offer the nice STM lenses that do this silently and smoothly. So the T5i with 18-135 or 18-55 is better for AF during video.

How much do you want to spend? This is why many wedding photographers end up with a collection of expensive lenses - they need the fast focusing and crisp photos. I recently reviewed the Sigma 17-70, very good lens for the money. So is the Tamron 28-75. Your other option is to collect a few prime lenses, you end up switching lenses more often but the value is excllent 35 f/1.8, 50 f/1.8 and 100 etc.

I would vote G6 or even one of the NEX series. They offer almost all the image quality of a dslr but they are certainly more portable. The 100D is smallish but as soon as you put on a decent lens it isn't so small anymore. though that is true of the G and NEX series too.

The 40mm f/2.8 would probably be best. It lets you get close, offers nice sharpness and lets in lots of light. You could start by just getting kit lens and if it doesn't work for you go to the prime but I think you will need prime for video or your ISO will be high. I love these kind of problems so happy to keep chatting - Love your you to use my links to buy and feel free to pop over to FB page and ask questions, no comment limit there :)

The D5200 could be right for you if you buy it with 18-105 or any lens other than the 18-55. the 18-55 is not a good lens and holds back the performance of the camera. Get the 18-105 and a nice prime lens like the 35 f/1.8 and you will be great. You could also consider the t5i with 18-135 - more user friendly but missing some of the features and low light performance of the D5200.

If you are shooting with a lens other than the kit lenses of the D5200 the difference is clearly noticeable. It's not so much the ISO - noise is about the same but the dynamic range - the separation of bright and dark is much clearer in the D5200, less so on the T5i. Links below video to some sample images and video so you can decide if it is worth it to you. I still lean Canon unless you plan on doing lots of low light shooting.

I have no idea why their tests show a difference. The cameras are the same inside and out. If you can find the 650D cheaper I would pick that, not enough differences to matter unless you wanted the 18-55 STM lens. In live view the AF is on the slow side, but no slower than other DSLRS. Through the viewfinder AF is nice and snappy. I do have a video that outlines the 650and 700 differences.

Hi Rob. Thanks for the nice review. I am looking around and trying to choose my first DSLR. I had initially chosen the Canon 70D, but I'm now a little short on budget, so I have to settle for a cheaper body. I'll be mainly using the camera for clinical photography (I'm a dentist), using dedicated macro lenses (60mm or 100mm) and a macro ring flash. I'll shoot on manual mode using aperture f11 for full face shots and f22 for teeth close-ups. First question is: would the Canon touch screen be useful for focusing while shooting on manual? Or that only works with auto focus? Second question: I will roughly take 12/15 pictures for every patients, most of them using the 'close-up' setting. I'll also need to use intraoral mirrors and retractors in order to frame all I need to. That means it'll take me around 3 minutes once I gain the necessary experience. I'll hod thr camera with one hand most of the time: which camera+macro lenses+macro flash is the lightest and/or easily manageable? (You said the grip is slightly better on the Canon). Thank you very much.

Hi Toby, I've always been a Canon user and I am deciding which camera is the better buy. I started with an SLR (I have some EF lens) before the digital camera came about, but since switching to a digital camera, I've always stuck with super zoom cameras. I kind of miss the flexibility a SLR camera offers and I was thinking of switching to a DSLR, but yet want the portability of carrying the camera everywhere so that I dun miss a shot. Which would you recommend: 700D, 100D, G6 or D5200?

I find the T5i easier to use but the D5200 produces very nice video, especially at lower light levels. The aperture block on the D5200 is annoying but you can work around it with mechanical aperture lenses.
