for dx i would say = tokina 11-16mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8, 17-55mm 2.8 and 70-200mm 2.8 if possible

Tried (almost) every mid range lenses out there for DX and these lenses hit the sweet spot between cost and image quality 1. Tamron 17-50 2.8 - for general purpose zoom 2. Nikkor 50mm 1.8G - for portraits 3..Nikkor 35mm 1.8G - for general purpose prime Unfortunately, I cannot recommend any of Nikon's longer zoom DXlenses (and even 3rd parties) because they're too expensive for what they are and the image quality just falls flat

Thanks - the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is one of the best value lenses period and does a great job on the D7100. Some people miss the wider end when using that lens on a crop camera like the D7100 but it offers sharpness across and excellent range for portraits and wedding work.
@APixerProductions8 жыл бұрын
I didn't like the review. sorry. you are suggesting all the primes of similar focal lengths.. don't you think its smarter to buy an 85mm 1.8 instead of 50mm 1.8 when there is already a 35mm.. I think people should buy 35mm, 85mm and maybe a 135mm/105mm.

I am a newcomer with a Nikon D5200. I purchased a Sigma DC 18-200 OS HSM zoom with auto focus and I am very happy with it. Especially taking portraits from a less intimidating distance at gatherings. Just a word of caution, when taking videos, DO turn off the OS as the motor makes a lot of noise trying to stabilize in video. No one seems to give this warning either at Sigma or on You-tube. Thanks so much for your very informative videos.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
That is great for tighter portraits and head shots. You may consider the 50 f/1.8 that actually equals 85 on the D5200.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
If you already have that lens it is fine But if you are considering something around that range the newer 18-140 is very good. For self time photos you can prefocus where you will be standing or pt the camera in continuous focus mode to focus on you OR use a remote that also does focus before photo. Last option is best. send me a message on my facebook page and I can provide a link to the remote you want.

It is. You could also wait and snag the D5300 body which comes out in a few weeks for some savings. But I do like the D7100 - all depends on what type of photography you are doing? Occasional and just fun - D5300 would be just fine. Slightly more advanced and professional D7100.

Hi Harold- the value of that feature really depends on the type of video work you plan to do. It is honestly something I don't use- I just don't do enough video beyond these how-to and am happy with the look straight out of my 5D Mark III. But for indie film makers and other serious videographers having that feature in a $700 camera with a good sensor is seriously impressive.

Yes - you have to multiple the focal length times 1.5 with Nikon cameras. so a 50mm does become a 75mm. It is not absolutely necessary t o have auto-focus but it is very nice. Really depends on what you are photographing, to manually focus every photo can be a bummer and I think you will quickly find yourself wishing for some AF. The D5200 is a good camera and paired with the 35 f/1.8- excellent. I have another video recommending lenses for the D5200.

You have been very helpful for my new D5200. Trying to get some versatile lenses for not a lot of money. Thanks. I just bought the 35 F 1.8 from your recommendation, I have a 50 F 1.8D and of course, the 18-55 kit lens. Had the camera for a couple of months and I am learning.

I agree along as someone knows what they are getting into - for folks just trying out a prime the 35 f/1.8 is the way to go. Once you know how awesome primes are lenses like the Sigma 50 f/1.4 are excellent. Thanks!
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
Can I say neither and suggest the Sigma 17-70- gives you no overlap and nice low aperture and image stabilization. The best general purpose walk around prime lens for the D5200 is the 35 f/1.8 - don't have to buy it right away but you will enjoy it in the lower light.
@AbrahamDakin11 жыл бұрын
I love the 35mm 1.8G. When I first started out I couldn't see the positives of having a prime over the convenience of buying zooms. However, now that I own the 35mm, I can't take it off my camera. It's small, light, great for street photography (as you're a little more inconspicuous) and it has fantastic image quality. I can't say enough good things about that lens.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
Hi Roberto, I didn't notice any serious issues with the new version of my lens. Certainly a $500 zoom that offers such nice apertures is going to have some issues and likely at the edge but this is one of those things that in real world situations is rarely noticeable if at all.
@gerGoPrint3D10 жыл бұрын
:-) 5 years ago I got my D60 with the 18-105VR, still using it after 4 bodies on the D7100. My second lens was the 70-300VR, then 35mm/F1.8 and 50mm/F1.8/D (with the aperture ring) just as you recommend. For a fifth I would recommend everybody to get a wide angle lens, it turned out to be a Tokina 12-24mm/F4.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
I have not tested these two side by side - I believe the 16-85 is slightly better but the two lenses are very similar. 17-70 gives you better aperture options across the range, better in low light.
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
The aperture ring should work - it is mechanical and independent of the body you put it on. 50mm D version will not autofocus on D5100 but will work.

Got myself a new D7100 this March, been happy as hell with it ( how else, switching from a D3100 ), I use Sigma's 18-125mm 90% of the time during summer.. also I just bought the Nikon's 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR that I also use when the 125mm is just not enough. During winter, when the sun barely rises here in Finland (or just night time in general when it gets dark) I use my 3 primes, Nikon 35mm f/1.8G, Nikon 50mm f/1.8D and my Sigma 15mm f/2.8.. Been wanting to find either a 105mm f/2.8 or a 70-200mm f/2.8, for a bargain that is.. Imo, you could have included the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 lens in this video as well. Not sure what it costs new, but I got it for 120€ used, in perfect condition (other than the front cap & hood were missing). Just my opinion though. Nice video, I agree with you 100%, besided the video not including the Sigma 15mm :D
@photorectoby11 жыл бұрын
How about the 80-400 from Nikon? Probably still pricey to rent that beast but covers all the zoom you need. Or 70-300 VR, those would be my picks. If you know you will be close to the action the 70-200 is excellent, but 200 can feel like small zoom sometimes.

Good recommendations. I have the D7100 and I have had the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 (older model) for many years that I bought for my old D50, and I have loved it. I have just recently bought the Nikkor 17-55 2.8 and I really love this lens. It is so sharp and the build quality is fantastic. There is a little barrel distortion, but still it is by far my favorite lens, and on my D7100 90-95% of the time. My primes are the exact same ones that you recommended, Nikkor 35mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8, and they are also so excellent. I went on a day trip a while back I just put on only the 35mm 1.8 and I loved the pictures I got, just missed a little wider focal lengths when shooting landscapes but otherwise excellent.

Nice - Always like to hear that feedback. One trick for wider landscapes with the 35 - shoot a two shot panorama and stitch together in photoshop. A little more work but it does quite well.

AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8 the best prime lens I've purchased, I bought too the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 and is terrific, but you need to be so close if you want to make a portrait. In Christmas I received the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR as a gift, perfect range for me, but you're going to need many light, if you want to shot over the 1/125s; and of course a good tripod.

Hi Stacie, in General I am not a fan of these do it all lenses - they make lots of sacrifices to cram that much focal length in one lens. I much prefer the 70-300. D7100 is pretty sweet with 70-300, you have the 2x crop mode which will give you even more zoom and faster burst rate for catching your kids in action.

I am looking into purchasing a Nikon D7100 along with the 18-140mm lens. I like the versatility that the 18-140 will offer, even though I realize it is not the fastest of lenses. In going with the D7100 instead of the new D7200 (which the added benefits don't seem like important benefits for my needs), it allows for a little more room in my budget for a prime lens to add to the mix. (I plan on buying these all used from Ebay or the like). However, I'm trying to decide which prime lens to get. The 35 seems like a good walk around lens, but the 50 better for portrait. These are 2 areas of photography that I enjoy the most. I am often in a confined space however when doing portrait work since I don't have a studio or anything (just a hobbyist). So now, I'm thinking that maybe I should decide between the 35mm and the 40mm. I do love the occasional Macro shot and the 40 would get me a range between the two. What would you recommend? I have a lot of nieces and nephews and am "The family photographer" so I take a lot of shots of kids. I love the idea of some macro so I can take some more interesting shots of the small details in life that are involved with kids. What would be your recommendation of which prime lens to add to the 18-140mm lens and the D7100? Oh, and I love bokeh....I want as good and as much as I can between these options. :)

Terrific video and, while I couldn't care less about video, these are sound recommendations. I currently own a Nikon D5100 on which is always mounted the Nikon 35 f1.8G and 2 Nikon D7000s which I swap between a Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 a Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3DL and a Nikon 300mm f4 ED IF depending on my shooting and for the outing. Either way, they are all either in the bag or in the car. This is all I need for what I do and I didnt break the bank but, I am soon to replace the Sigma 18-200 with the Nikon version fir my walkaround/travel lens.

depends what you want, I have the d5200 but I also shot with a friends 650d and loved it. if you want a user friendly camera take the canon, if you like the little edge that the nikon has. then you should take the Nikon (higher pixel count, 39 point AF, bit better image quality which is hard to distinguish) there is no better camera in general as the image quality will depend on the lens and on your capabilities as well.

If you are planning to buy the 70-300 then be sure to get the AF-S VR one, VR is a must on that focal length. I have it and I am lucky to have a very good copy. With wide angle, I haven't tried the sigma 10-20 but I do have the Tokina 12-24 F4, love that lens, super sharp even wide open and it stays on my camera body more than the 50mm though it was a bit heavy because of its built quality.

My 50mm f/1.8D is my workhorse for portraits (on my D90). I absolutely love it. I find the 35mm f/1.8G is a little less sharp but still good. I have a 28-75 Tamron and while it can be beautifully sharp it's a little temperamental. It misses focus quite a lot. One you didn't mention is the 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 which can be found VERY cheaply second hand and is a significant step up from the 18-55 kit lens.

Hello Toby, would you also recommend the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for indoor architectural photographs? I have a Nikon 5200 and want to make sure I am getting a compatible lens with built in motor, etc. Thank you.

Thanks Toby for all videos. Can we say that with 40mm you can do almost the same that you can do with 35mm and 50mm but with 40 you can also take macro that you can't with the other is that right?

Those primes - the 50 and 35 are lovely and an awesome value.

Hello Thank you so much for this video , I am starting with wedding photography and I'll appreciate your advice , I own a nikon D7100 with a 50 mm 1.8 prime lenses but I am having problems with the apace at some of the churches for which the 50 mm 1.8 is not very handful due to the crop factor of my camera . Will you recommend the Tamron 17-70 for wedding photography ?

Link under the video leads to page where each is linked to amazon so you know exactly which one I am recommending.

what about a Nikon 16-85mm standard zoom, which, after the introduction of the new 16-80mm lens, must be cheaper than before?? it seems to be a very sharp lens although admittedly slower.

I am considering to buy either a 70-300 for wildlife or a 50 1.8 or 1.4 for low light. I currently have 18-140 VR kit. Can you help?

I have a Nikon D 40 with a Tamaron 18-270 mm lens. What wide angel would you suggest ? Do you have a review on the wide angle lens?

Thank you very much Toby. I'll see what I can do about getting a calibration. The backfocus seems so slight (20% of the time it seems dead on, 80% of the time it seems slightly backfocused, now that I've looked at more images I've taken). I hope a small adjustment will be a quick and easy process. It leaves me wishing they could release a firmware update that incorporates lens calibration features on the D5200... you'd think that wouldn't be too difficult to do.

I'm using D5100 with 18-105mm (mostly on travel). Recently I bought 40mm macro lens (for product photo) which is amazing lens. Now I'm considering to buy 35mm because on 18-105 I miss bokeh that I have on 40mm. 40mm is too narrow vs 18-105 where I need to move away from object to get decent bokeh (and still not as good as 40mm). Is the 35mm right solution for me? Decent bokeh at decent distance with decent width? It would be amazing to see comparation between 40mm and 35mm 1.8.

It is a good lens but older and as a result you got some issues with quality control on those older Sigma lenses.

Thanks for the tip on the video lense for the Nikon D5300 etc. I searched everywhere for a simple lense with aperture ring recommendation and found it in this video :-) So the 50mm F1.8 D if I understood correctly! Excellent! Thank you!

Ok I'm confused I want to buy the 35 1.8 and he said I need the G version and not the D version for it auto focus on the D5200. When Iv looked online they say 1.8G DX ???

Lens question... just bought a d5300 thanks to your reviews and I made sure to get the 18-140 kit lens. I want to find a wide angle lens to shoot friends snowboarding, skateboarding, and night sky/landscape shots without getting that extreme fish eye effect. There's so many options out there it's all very overwhelming and I'm not sure which ones will work with my d5300. I'm up for anything under $1000.

If you have photoshop you can go to filter>lens correction> custom> remove distortion and remove the fisheye effect. That way you don't have to spend too much on a lens that doesn't have that effect. Of course if you're wiling to spend lots the expensive lens will do it better than photoshop.

Paul- I have heard similar reports, especially paired with the D5200 and it is a real shame. I would try contacting Nikon and see if they will test/calibrate for you.
