I actually am on a limited budget and ran across a D5100. I put the rest of my money into glass, especially some good prime lenses. I wanted to thank-you for your excellent content on KZbin. I have become quite a fan and I am learning a ton from you. I just wanted to say "thanks!"

I have a D3400 and have managed to tether it to laptop, windows notebook and desktop. With a cheap remote trigger this gives me all the advantages of both wifi and a swivelling screen. The windows software was free and I had the other kit anyway. Thanks Tony for giving me the idea of tethering in one of your other videos.

I bought a D3300 not too long ago and I love it! I would call myself an amateur photographer at best and I want to get better. I also bought a 35mm which I also like. My question is when is it that I should upgrade? The photography I'm trying to do is night photography and a lot of wide angle exposures around the city at night. I was thinking about getting the Rokinon 14mm soon. However, as for a new camera, I was thinking about buying a D7100? Recommendations or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I know this video is a few years old, but just looked at it as I was researching current kit lenses for D5600/D5500 for my brother. I thought I'd add my perspective on the 18-140mm lens. In 2014 I owned a D3100 with the kit 18-55. In August of that year I was planning a couple week trip to North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Having been there previously in 2010 with a small Nikon point & shoot & an Olympus Ultra Zoom, I knew I wanted something a bit longer than 55mm. So I picked up a used 55-105 locally. That and my D3100 did a wonderful job for me on that trip. Between then and December 2016 I acquired a D5500. I planned another trip for December '16 and once again I really only wanted to carry my D5500 with one lens attached. I travel far and wide on the Island and like to travel light, and photography is important but not my main gig while there. The 18-140 did exactly what I wanted. Actually if anything, I wished I had a wider lens, not longer, for some landscape pics, BUT since I am using crop sensor cameras I have learned to do some quite good panoramas to stich when I get back home. Bottom line, if you're planning travel and want to go light, but have a decent lens on your camera for most everyday purposes, the 18-140 wins hands down. Of course if you are looking to take serious photographs you'd be packing more gear anyways.

By the way, for anyone who may read this. Always go for the better option, the $200 won't be missed in the long run. I would & do recommend the D5300 with the 18-140mm kit lens which I bought over a year ago from a locally owned store (small chain), Crutchfield that has lifetime support for any items bought through them. Camera experts that know more than the employees at big box stores like Best Buy etc. I believe in buying a camera and never getting rid of it even though may buy newer ones at some point. Still have film cameras, multiple digital and no reason to sell as they don't bring what they are still worth to me. My reasoning on these things may show my age (almost 60). If go someplace that runs good chance vehicle could be broken into, don't want to leave my best stuff in there. Couple of cameras back takes excellent photos and while I would be upset at losing, it is not $4000 down the drain.

well, I was about to buy the 5300 but after seeing the difference between these two cameras, I decided to buy the 3300 and I'm really happy with it cuz the features that 5300 comes with were not really necessary for me and the image quality is awesome for a beginner's camera. I am a D3300 owner and a beginner hobbyist photographer. I own the Nikon 18-140mm, 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.8. As far as I can see these three lenses are the best quality budget minded lenses. I started to look into zoom lenses and the prices are astronomical. I’d appreciate your recommendation on a quality zoom lens or any other quality lens that will help keep my lens selection well rounded.

Watched you along with many others from over a year ago before buying camera. Appreciate your info. I have repeatedly heard and read in books (David Busch & others) that the 18-140mm exceeds the 18-55 in many ways. So I got that as kit lens, along with the 70-300mm, 35mm 1.8 (wish I could have bought 1.4), 40 macro, 85 macro in Nikkor and a 100mm manual focus Tokina based on reviews on it as well. Many optional things to buy like extension tubes (good quality even on those). Need to work on lens reversing ring and adapter for that option for serious macro. Photography is something you grow into! Growing now translates to two pretty good size camera bags!!

I love my 3100 and just today I went to the store to hand both cameras, but I really see that the extra stuff on the 5300 is not that important for me to spend the extra money, so I think I'll go with the 3300 and I'll enjoy it for many years and I'll maybe will get another lens to extend the type of shoots in certain situations!

@mcr0741
@mcr0741 6 жыл бұрын
If you get the 35mm prime, it almost eliminates your need of using a kit lens. Personally, the 18-140 is not that convenient either, since you think of it as the one lens that will give you versatility, but its kind of bulky to use in the first place. I'd rather suggest the 18-55 and that is only if you're riveted on to buying a kit lens too. Here are some combos that you should look into: 1) Body + 35mm 2) Body + 18-55 + 50mm 3) Body + 35mm + 50-250mm.

I am looking into purchasing a d5300. It will be my first dslr but it's a camera that I want to grow into and be able to use for a while since I am a college student going for a doctorate degree and I probably won't have the money for this kind of thing for a very long time. But then I heard that the d3300 has a highly detailed guide mode that would help me learn how to change the different settings on the camera like the aperture and how they would effect the picture I was taking. I was wondering if the d5300 has the same tutorialistc guide mode. As someone who is just getting into photography that kind of integrated help would be fantastic because I have a tendency to forget things quickly that aren't directly related to my college studies.

So: 1)Nikon 18-55mm VR II (kit lens) + 55-300mm VR 2)Nikon 35mm f/1,8G + 55-300mm VR 3)Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM 4)18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC (OS)* MACRO HSM What do you think about thes3? I am a beginner and I would really appreciate your help!!

Just in case anyone is thinking about picking up a secondhand D3300, the AF mechanism it uses in "Live Mode" (looking at the image on the screen rather than thru the lens) is not very good. It is bad enough that I never use Live Mode. The standard AF thru the lens works fine for this particular and eternal amateur. I wish I had known this before I purchased it 4 or 5 years ago though. I would have passed on the D3300. I do not know if the D5300 suffers the same deficiency. I hope someone who knows the D5300 will report on that.

Hi Tony, I am a beginner at DSLR and I am trying to decide on which one to buy, I am a chef and am looking to primarily use my camera for food photography. I really like the focused foreground but highly blurred back ground. I am wondering what camera body and a good lens to get to help with this.

These days people also have tablets. Tablets mostly have very high res IPS screens which are great for reviewing photo's on the go. Nathan elson from Calgary actually used it profesionaly in his fujifilm x photographer video of the 56mm f1.2 lens. WiFi isn't just an gadget it can be really handy in some cases besides social media.

Sure, we'll tether when we have a separate art director in the studio... but that use isn't typical for a D3300/D5300 buyer, and the Nikon app isn't especially well setup for tethering.

Tony Northrup No, that is indeed stupid. I meant you can use the tablet as a screen to show your model/girlfriend how it looks and how you want the next pose. Tablets are great for that. They have long battery life compared to laptops and are easy to carry. I do agree that the Nikon WiFi is a bit clunky. The Panasonic gx7 is much easier to connect.

Great review! I came here researching the 3300 and have been swayed to the 5300. I am looking at a package with 18-55 mm and 55-300 MM Nikkor lenses. My primary interest is capturing kids in motion, and in the case of basketball, with very poor lighting. We travel a lot and the lighting in these multi-sport buildings just confound me with my current Canon mirrorless. Would you say the 5300 would be good for low-light action? I need to freeze motion without any sort of flash if possible. Thanks!

Really informative video. I was wondering if I should get D3300 and use the extra money for a better lens. I am more interested into macro photography and the articulating screen is a great help. ( I currently shoot with Panasonic FZ200 which has articulating screen). You also answered one question you asked in the video - why would someone want to adjust camera settings through an app? Well so I don't shake my camera while rotating the knobs and dials. I take macro photos and even though the camera is mounted on the tripod an mm of movement while trying to change the aperture or focus, moves the target I am shooting away form where I want it. I have a remote shutter release but I wish if I could control more things without touching the camera. Thanks for the video. I am going ahead with D5300. :)

I can get the d3300 for 400 dollars and a d5300 for 550 dollars. Should I buy the 5300 or use the 150 i saved on a tripod/accessory? This is my first dslr, but I am fairly skilled in photography. I would call myself a begginer-infermediate. I do not care about bracketing, but the extra auto focus capabilities are nice.

d7100 and d5300 share the same quality when it comes to picture quality with d 5300 a lil better in low light but d7100 has better controls and overall ergonomics. love both cameras. they shoot better than 5d mark 2 and other classic full frames

Hi, I'm deciding between both of these cameras. I am shooting mostly surf photos and sport occasionally. I don't know which one to choose. Both of the camera's are in my price range so i'm not worried about that. I just want the camera that is better for what i'm doing. Could you please let me know what you think or recommend a different camera that $1000 dollars or under. Thanks

So I'm planning on buying my first dslr and I'm leaning towards the d3300. I will mostly be taking photos outdoors and of course sporting events, whether it's games (I am an nfl season ticket holder) in the stands, or training camp, etc. Do you think the d3300 will be capable for that Or should I spend the extra 250$ and get the d5300?
