I took the Tamron 18-400, the Canon 70-300 USM II and rhe Bigma 60-600 Sport to South Africa s Kruger. My daughter shooting the Tamron 18-400 on her 1300D, my girlfriend shooting the Canon USM 70-300 on her 77D and me the Sigma 60-600 on my 77D. The verdicht? . The 18-400 most versatile, weaker IS and thus harder to shoot sharp hand held @ 400 mm. . The Canon @ 300 mm top IS and sharpest. Like the reviews say: AF speed, Sharpness at L quality lenses level. Cropping on 24 MP will easily bring it in the 400 mm range. . The Sigma the absolute master on long 600 mm range photo and it IS is simply amazing. Hand held sharpness at Tx speeds @ lineair mm ranges (1/600 @ 600mm) in lower light no problem. I am deeply impressed with the lens. But they all have their role to play in my lens bag.

I've had a Tamron 18-270 for some years now and it is a very versatile lens which does let you get images that would otherwise be missed. However, the images do tend to be bit soft throughout its range, even at its supposed sweet spot of F8. I'll be keeping it for now, but I will take a lot of convincing to invest in the18-400 - stretching it out to a magnification ratio of 22:1 does seem like pushing any lens just a bit too far.

I owned this lens. I won it in a photography contest. I was overjoyed to get a 700 dollar lens for free. I used it perhaps 10 times in the first 3 months, it had satisfactory performance. After 3 months, the lens became stiff in the mid range of extension 150-250 mm. I just lived with it, since i got it for free. Over the next 18 months, it became more and more stiff, and I continued to live with this condition. About 3 months ago, it froze completely and became unusable. I had been told that tamron has a 6 year warranty, so i checked into it. They OK'd the return, so i boxed it up nicely, then sent it via FedEx, with insurance for 1000 dollars. A few days later, i received an email from Tamron, saying that repairs would be 400 dollars. I want to point out that this lens had absolutely no physical damage: no dents, no scratches, no broken glass, in other words, on the exterior, it appeared as brand new. I have photos to prove it. Tamron tried to tell me that the lens was physically damaged, so they would not honor the warranty, as it was my fault. They had no response when I asked, why, if I damaged it, did this condition progress in a gradual fashion over the period of one year?? They told me they have the finest warranty in the photography professional business, 6 years. I told them that their very fine warranty is worthless if they don't honor it. So, to make a long story short: TAMRON DOES NOT HONOR THEIR WARRANTY, at least in my case. I have told them that I will report this story to everyone in my photography community.

@HR-wd6cw Жыл бұрын
For what it is, the Tamron is very good. The Sigma will be better at longer FLs anyway since it's "twaked" for the 100-400mm focal range, whereas the 18-400 has more ground to cover and when you have such a wide zoom range, it's more difficult to balance out image quality, cost, size and weight, and usually image quality suffers a bit in those cases over cost, size,and weight, but as we see here, still not bad for an 18-400 extreme "travel" zoom. For casual travel, the 18-400 would be a good option, obviously lenses with a narrower focal range (narrower meaning less of a gap from wide to telephoto) will do better but are more limited to just that focal range. And for the money, with the Tamron, you are effectively getting the equivalent of two (possibly) three lenses in one, for about the price of a telephoto zoom from Canon or Nikon.

Hi Toby, another great video thanks. I have the older Tamron 16-300 which I find quite soft, and the Tamron 150-600 G2 which I find excellent, but heavy. Would you say in your opinion its worth selling those 2 and getting this 18-400?
@sixtogarcia13147 жыл бұрын
There is no way I would sell the tamron 150-600 G2 to get this lens. Just my personal opinion. It will optically out perform this lens as well as giving you 200 mm more focal length. Unless you are not into wildlife and prefer a more casual photography style. In that case maybe a good Idea.
@riodante33867 жыл бұрын
Remember that with the cropping factor on most Nikon and Canon camera models, the true focal range on this Tamron lens is more like 24- 620 mm, so it is actually very similar to the G2. However yes, because it is a cheaper lens it is not as sharp, although it is much lighter. I would not sell the G2 though, mostly because it is sharper and overall better optically like you said, but if you are judging on range there really isn't a difference between the two.
@sixtogarcia13147 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Range is not a real issue here. In fact when it comes to long telephotos the difference that 100mm makes is not as great as some might think, don't get me wrong.... every bit helps, especially once you get to 400 mm. I often consider 400mm on a crop sensor camera a basic entry requirement for serious wildlife photography. But many do it with less. But optically the tamron G2 is fairly sharp. I'm not knocking the 18-400 but its definitely not as sharp as a tamron G2 or even the sigma 150-600 and they do offer an extra 200mm of range. And honestly i wouldn't mind having that 18-400.

And its macro shots at the tele end are also quite good as well. In my opinion this is one of the best walk about lens for travel photography covering all bases from macro to the Tele end. I've used a few of the older Tamron lenses and this is a significant improvement in the build quality as well. Hope this helps.

Hi! I wanted to know if this lens is better than the Nikon 18-300?? Thanks!

How is this on the Sony. Is there a Sony mount yet or which adapter do you use it with
@sergioserramusic7 жыл бұрын
This 18-400 seems a great lens, for its purpose. You can get a lot out of it, coupled with a decent body. I really wanted it to have full time manual focus with focusing distance window, hoping to see them in the future!

I am going to buy new lens for my Canon D650 SLR for hiking and mountain biking in nature, what kind of consumer prize range lens you recommend for nature and star pictures and video too? Now I have Canon kit lens 18-135 STM, it is great for close range pictures like flowers and scenery views, but not so great for zooming nature pictures or wildlife. Which lens has better stabilizer for video Sigma 18-300 OS or Tamron 18-400 VC, how about AF which one is faster to focus? Only Canon lenses I can think of are Canon 55-250 STM or Canon EF 77-300 USM which one is better for video and photo? There isn't any Canon lens for wide scenery pictures like 18-300 or 18-400? What kind of zoom range is maximum zoom for handheld, not going to carry tripod or monopod with me, perhaps some kind of bicycle camera stand would be possible.

I'm a newbie and I appreciate your opinion. I have a Nikon d 4 used. I want to know is this lens compatible or worth the money for my camera?
@photorectoby5 жыл бұрын
The D4 is full frame. The 18-400 is designed for crop sensor cameras so you will be losing much of your full frame advantage.

Awesome video...but you made me feel nervous waving the camera around with one hand above the water with no strap at all. Just found your KZbin offerings, and really like them.

Any experience using this on a m4/3 body? With metabones does it behave well with IS and focus?

It makes me nervous watching him capture photos with this nice camera and lens from the edge of the fast-moving boat without the camera strapped to him. There is no way I would capture these photos without the camera strapped around me.

Most of the differences I have seen in the different reviews can be fixed in Lightroom are Photoshop.

@PhotoRec TV, is this compatible with Nikon D5600? is image stabilized with full zoom of 400mm ? Generally if the zoom is more than 3 or 5x image will not be clean right? Please advice. Thank you.

Hey There quick question. ARe you shooting with a Nikon D7500?
@branigan997 жыл бұрын
Had the Tamron 18-400 for a few days and was extremely disappointed with my copy, I images were soft at longer end but the most disappointing was the shocking chromatic aberration. It was leaving a solid purple line across the contrasting edge of rocky Hill against the sunshine that looked like someone had taken a marker and outlined the hill. Other examples where similarly displeasing. Never seen anything like it, it went straight back and the king offer of a replacement was politely refused.
@photorectoby7 жыл бұрын
That's disappointing! I have samples you can download, I saw very little CA and was overall very impressed with this lens.
@branigan997 жыл бұрын
PhotoRec TV happy to send a couple of sample photos, I was excited by the prospect of the lens but alsas not to be, ended up with the camon 70-300 nano USM much sharper and no CA issues. Love your reviews by the way..

Great review and impressive lens! That versatility is very tempting and when I one day go to Svalbard to see polar bears, I think this will be in my kit.

Also I may have missed it, but did you mention what body you were shooting with?

hi great video i was thinking about selling my canon 70-300mm L IS lens for this because you can go down to 18mm do you think the sharpness on this lens is good enough to sell me canon lens?

impressive, do you know whether Metabone 0.64 could support this lens for my 4/3....if it could, I would have a 12mm -284mm f.24-4 all rounded lens!!
