Using this lens on D500 and could not be happier. Zooming to 400mm to shoot surfers and handholding while watching other guys with their 3X larger and heavier 200-500mm and 80-400mm on monopods/tripods..... I think this may be the best super zoom lens currently available.

I've tried many different lens combo for my holiday trips over the years: 18-55mm +85mm 18-55mm+ 70-200mm 24-70mm + 70-200mm 24-70mm + 85mm 35mm+50mm+85mm 18-270mm VC PZD version While the super zoom gave me the worst result, but I've chosen the super zoom as my No1 holiday lens. For me, when I'm on holiday, my focus is on the holiday itself, I don't need to get the best possible images. If it is a photography trip, then I'll get my pro gears. The superzoom gives me an option to travel light, remove the need to change lenses and provides good enough IQ to record the fun times with my family and friends. It really depends on what you need or looking for. It is not about being lazy either. It is hard to carry an extra bag, with about 5kgs worth of camera gears on a hiking trip.

Jim Huang when I just want to capture normal family pics I just use my phone or a small cam. No need for a DSLR at all there if not going creative.

"Jim Huang when I just want to capture normal family pics I just use my phone or a small cam. No need for a DSLR at all there if not going creative" There is a lot you can do with a DSLR type camera that you cannot do with a phone. It's fine if you make the decision to use your phone, of course, but a phone will not work for everyone.

The Tamron 100-400mm f4.5-6.3 has been shown to have much better optical quality. Whenever you have such a long range like 18-400mm, there are too many compromises.

For the price and maximum range you have to kinda take an L and use a tripod or at the very least a monopod. Given how expensive canon lenses with i.s. are at these ranges, it's just unreasonable to expect from a superzoom style lens. The great thing about this lens is one of its bigger flaws, not being able to shoot in low light/indoors, can be offset by just carrying your nifty fifty in your bag/pocket. Sadly can't be speed boosted on to mirrorless cameras for an aperture boost but still. This is, arguably, the best 'kit lens upgrade' type lens. Particularly if bought used/refurbed. Some people are paying the same prices for small kit lenses in 2.8 or the modern 55-250s and 70-300s. Only reason to not get this is if you're specifically shooting low light like events, in which case Tamron still wins out with their 70-210 f/4 that can be speed boosted. Then you just get your wider primes and you're set, basically.

This lens suffers at 400mm from focus breathing when close focus 30 ft. and closer. Appears to be around 280mm when compared to my 300mm f2.8 L is lens.
@birderjohn3396
@birderjohn3396 7 жыл бұрын
Beware, the ‘400mm’ is only at or near infinity focus!! On super zooms the focus ring causes a lot of zoom in and out. ie. a subject 10ft away at 400mm, would be equivalent to say 290mm on a 150-500mm lens at the same distance.

Hey, have not used that Nikon but typically the super zooms like the 18-400 are worse for sharpness and detail. If you are going for sharpness try out prime lenses like the 50mm F1.8. The Tamron 18-400 is more for when you can only have 1 lens and you want it to handle ANYTHING

+N199UA and you would have great iq but potentially miss a cool shot depending on your subject. Half the images I took would have lacked impact at either of those focal lengths...and that's what I'm starting to consider. Am I too concerned with image quality that I've been missing out on awesome images simply because I didn't have the right focal length? Or is iq the main thing that matters. Either way, I thought the overall quality was solid unless I zoomed too 100% once I corrected CA

Tamron licenses the protocols to AF on nikon bodies. Canon doesn't license anything, both sigma and tamron have to reverse engineer that protocol. I would find it really strange tamron working better on canon than nikon
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
+jeffry de meyer the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 had many issues with Nikon too and not with Canon. Not sure why given what you said. AF was good though on this lens on the Nikon body with the exception of live view which is more of a Nikon issue. It was the stabilization that didn't seem perfect

Simple Answer ; Nikon bodies sucks. Thats all. *ROFL*
@jeffrydemeyer5433
@jeffrydemeyer5433 7 жыл бұрын
Simple really Tamron gives Nikon money to make sure their lenses work properly on nikon bodies. Canon doesn't offer that service, so I find it odd a tamron lens certified by nikon to work on nikon bodies is out performed by a tamron lens for which they have to reverse engineer the canon protocols to work properly. Sigma doesn't pay anyone which is why you get compatibility issues with sigma lenses both on canon as on nikon where tamron just has those issues with canon bodies. When those companies release new bodies.

jeffry de meyer Yes, I realized their m.o, The only reason when a lens dont work properly with a body, Its simply because Lazy Engineering (Coding & Testing) to fine tuning the final product. IMHO, *Nik●n is the one to blame really* , Tamron is an ambitious company, with desire to rule 3rd party lens world. Meanwhile Nik●n probably insert a buggy protocol so the Tamron lenses wont work perfect 100% on their bodies. Making Nikk●r superior than others,

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
You definitely will want to be careful about changing lenses on a safari because the sensor can get dirty fast so it would be great to keep a single lens kit for that as well. On an APS-C camera, the 150-600 is probably way too long for a single lens kit so you would absolutely want 2 lenses. You might be able to get away with a 100-400mm lens though which are very popular. The quality on the 18-400 is a little worse but if you are not printing, you likely will barely notice the difference on your D7100 and can do a single lens kit to save weight and not get the sensor dirty.

P.S. the lens, believe it or not, is actually 80% metal. The external barrel is polycarbonate but the internals are all metal, plus the weatherproofing throughout. If you want to see a solid folder of images from this lens, you can head over to the Tamron Rocky Mountain Region facebook page: facebook.com/tamronRM/posts/579930685463879 lastly, for the VC, this lens will do better when programmed with the TAP-In console to use shutter-priority VC. @@roberttrebor5891 I didn't measure it for mine but they should all be the same...it's not a lens specific issue, it's just the way the optics are designed. It's also not a unique issue with Tamron either...it's something you will see with other brands and other super zoom lenses...especially more budget focused lenses because it's more expensive to design around this with superzooms.

For sharp lenses good in low light, you should consider some prime lenses like a 35mm or 50mm. The Sigma 17-70 is also decent general zoom with a wider aperture

If you had a 600mm full frame f/9 ish lens it would be the same size as this is zoomed in. There's a reason they don't make those, they are too slow to be practical for sports and wildlife, the main uses for a 600mm lens. If you just want that much reach for still or very slow subjects then go for it. Just know there is a reason pros use the really big f4 500mm and 600mm lenses.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
Think about it though, that's really only around 1 stop better for a huge and expensive F4 lens. Most new cameras are at least 1 stop better in low light than cameras 3 years ago so if you used to be shooting F4 at 1600 iso 3 years ago, you should be good shooting F5.6 3200 ISO on a new camera. But yes, this is not for pro use.

Hi Dan... Hallo from Indonesia. Great review! May I know your views on comparing this lens over Tamron older 16-300mm, in terms of image quality? Secondly, I am macro photography enthusiast and from Tamron commercial, I know that this lens can do a tele-macro shoot. How would you think about this, is it good enough for macro shooter? Thanks and awaiting your response. Keep up the good work...!
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! So I have not compared this to the older Tamron so I can't really comment there. However as a macro lens I really think this will not do you justice. The macro ability is still going to be very slight and the focal length for that is a bit awkward. I think you are going to want a better quality lens for that and maybe look in to using extension tubes if you are using non macro lenses

Dan Watson I have that lens, and it is great, but correct me if I'm wrong, it's a full frame lens, so the f4 needs to be multiplied by crop factor...giving you a constant f6.... right?
@ralfjansen9118
@ralfjansen9118 7 жыл бұрын
The focal length and aperture, in regard of exposure, will stay of course the same f/4 (the lens does not know and care which sensor size is used). The difference is the angle of view and the depth of field (if you frame the image the same, you need to go step back on crop and get, by this, more dof).

Jonathan Mack , this is the most hardcore urban legend ever. Let me explain: If you and a friend of yours take a light meter, one in NJ (DX sensor) the other one over the river in NY (FX sensor), same day, same second, no clouds, free sky, no skyscrapers, nothing, will you measure less light in NJ? Noooooooo! Total nonsense this light reduction fairytale. And it's also no plus in optical focus. It's only a "virtual" plus in zoom, because it is a crop and nothing else. There is no change in optics, the distance between lens and sensor must be exactly the same on DX and FX, otherwise you'll get images out of focus. It is only a crop. For that, FX lenses, shaped for the larger FX sensor, deliver a better edge to edge sharpness if used on the smaller DX sensor, because the most fuzzy part of image is already cropped off. Did I forget to mention it? It's only a crop. 🙈😜
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
Jonathan, I agree with the others. The camera already takes into account the fact that the sensor is smaller and adjusts the light accordingly so no need to multiply the aperture. Technically it is correct what you said but the camera already takes this into account so ignore it. The only reason that info would be needed is so you know that you will be getting a depth of field closer to what F5.6 on a full frame would be even if you are using and shooting at F4 on the A6300.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 7 жыл бұрын
I have not compared them directly so hard to say. I'm usually not a fan of these super zooms for there lower quality BUT if it gives you all the range you need, at least there is some advantage. That's why I like the 18-400mm because there were a few times I actually used the 400mm length for the eagle/tiger/eclipse and I would not have been able to do that with any other lens.

I purchased one of these Tamron 18-400m AF/IS lens to use on my Canon 90D. Sadly, the lens would not focus with a focal length >50mm. Had to use manual focus. Worse than that the lens just hunts so much and occasionally the camera displayed "Error 70" - take out the battrery and retry - possible hardware fault". My camera works fine with Canon lens but not this Tamron. I returned the lenms for a refund.

I would no longer recommend this lens, up to a week ago this was my favorite lens, but a week ago the lens barrel began getting much stiffer, and at 3/4 zoom or beyond it stopped focusing. Now, a week later and you have to force the lens to even half way zoom and it will now only focus up to half way zoom, the lens is basically dying as I try to use it and this is a brand new lens. I had been using it daily to do photography in Acadia National Park.
