In this video Concussion Doc breaks down the Cameron Brate concussion injury from week 6 in the NFL and digs into the NFL concussion protocols to help you understand why "passing concussion protocol" doesn't mean that the athlete is fully recovered. We look at the science of concussion and repeated head injuries.

Collegiate ATC here. Completely agree we should be getting away from the symptom based approach. Always struggled with letting athletes go back to sport 7-10 days post injury. What I have found in healthcare is that if we take something away, it needs to be replaced. You briefly mentioned “tools” that we should be utilising instead, but what are those tools if we can’t actually measure energy levels? What suggestions do you have

I acknowledge that once you recover from a concussion and receive another concussion, your likely time frame resets and may be similar to the previous concussion (if we keep the actual injury constant) but why might subsequent concussions show up with "more severe" on field symptoms compared to previous concussions, as shown in Guskiewicz et al 2003?

Over a month ago I had a concussion which I am still suffering from. My symptoms include headaches and dizziness when I exercise. I was playing basketball and took a small hit to the face. Since I already had symptoms, I can’t be sure if it was a concussion. Could I have had a concussion from a small hit since I am vulnerable

How long do you recommend not going back to your sport after a mild concussion where there was no Confusion or disorientation Just a little bit of vision change for about 3 seconds and the symptoms completely went away after 24 hours? By Symptoms I mean I was a little fatigued the next day after that I felt normal

Does anyone know if it’s normal to have swollen veins on the side of the head with a concussion? I have had almost all other symptoms like headaches, dizziness neck pains, don’t completely remember the hit. Is it possible to have the swollen veins as an addition symptom

Hey doc, I just subbed and don't know if this was covered in a different video, but I'm an athlete and got concussed 5 weeks ago. I thought I was fully recovered after 3 weeks and started running in week 4. I felt fine during the run, but the day after my third run, I had a complete relapse in symptoms that lasted for a full week and feel just as bad as when I first got injured. Is this PCS and are there any at home rehab exercises for this kind of thing?

@@CompleteConcussions thanks - I’m trying to decide if I should start this now or in a month, based on whether or not I have PCS. I thought my symptoms had resolved after about 14 days, I could swim, walk, code, play video games and even drink some alcohol without feeling any symptoms return. But two weeks later when I tried exercise that moves my head a lot, like jumping and running, had a one day mild symptom flare up after my second training session, and a full week of more severe symptoms after my third session. In both cases I get fine during training but progressively worse later in the day and next day. Does that sound like PCS? If that sounds like PCS I’d start the program sooner than later, but if not, I’ll rest until my flared symptoms subside and try a more gradual return to training first

Hello Dr cameron i wanted to know your opinion on subconcussive blows to the head, i recently started boxing in my local gym and i saw alot of videos on the subject and its correlation with C.T.E and tbh those really scared me. Boxing has been a bit of a passion of mine for a while and i don't want to give it up before i even started, will these subconcussive hits to the head effect me in later life? Or are these hits not going to change much? And what is your opinion on it? I would really appreciate a explanation on it! Or a video of yours talking about it in detail. Thank you!

I have a question, for several years now I see a neurologist because when I do sudden movements with the head or having light blows my head hurts, and all because years ago, i gave myself constantly little blows to the jaw, not enough to have a concussion but they were quite frequent, that's why now for any small blow or slight jolt I already have symptoms of concussion that last days such as muscle numbness, lightheadedness, etc. The doctor tells me that all this is caused by anxiety and that I have a type of vertigo, That's why I would like to know if the same or something similar is happening to someone else, and how can I differentiate what I have from a concussion? Thanks a lot.

Hi there - this is a bit complicated to explain but i'll try my best to simplify. Concussions can result in long-term symptoms in some people (PCS). The cause of PCS is not ongoing brain injury, but rather dysfunction in other systems in the body - i.e., blood flow, inflammation, gut, vestibular, neck issues, anxiety/mental health etc. When people constantly get symptom flares with small hits (as you describe), the thinking is that this is likely due to dysfunction in those same systems that drive persistent symptoms (PCS). The way to get rid of this is to address all of those systems. Think of it like you don't quite have PCS but you are right on the edge...every small little hit stresses the system and pushes you slightly over the edge. The way to prevent this is to bring the system away from the edge of the cliff so that the next time you get a small hit it doesn't push you over the edge. Check out our Concussion FIx program. It's designed to teach you exactly how to address these underlying systems (because most doctors have no idea) - it would likely help you out tremendously - concussiondoc.io/offer/the-concussion-fix/

@@CompleteConcussions Thanks a lot for answering, i forgot to mention that before having these problems i was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder and that is why the neurologist came to that conclusion. What I understood from your explanation is that I don't have pcs but my nervous system is altered because those same systems don't work well, is that correct? I want to emphasize that all these symptoms improve when I do cardiovascular exercise and the hydration. And my last questions are: with pcs it is not necessary to have a stimulus (like a small blow) to have the symptoms? and with pcs it is easier to have a concussion? God bless you.

I have visual snow, and both types of afterimages. I am also sensitive to light. I have no cognitive impairment other than that Im slower at processing things visually due to the disturbances. I had a series of panic attacks and episodes of severe derealization, woke up in the middle of the night panicking with all of these symptoms. I no longer have panic attacks and I manage my anxiety well , but it has been 4 months and the visual disturbances continue to persists with no sign of improvement. My brain seems to be functioning fine Im no longer in a constant fight or flight but I still suffer from all of these symptoms. I also have mild tinnitus (which improved slightly). I thought looking at PCS treatment would be of help because of the similar symptoms. Would you be able to point me in the right direction for recovery?

Side note: It really just seems like my nervous system is "imbalanced" and if its worth anything my brain did not function at full capacity until the 2 month mark post panic disorder.

I have had some pretty difficult post concussion battles in the past. Long low intensity cardio, yoga /breath work, emphasis on sleep hygiene, and a complete overhaul of my diet away from processed foods were all critical for me. More generally, learning to down regulate and activate your parasympathetic nervous system while at the same building your capacity to handle healthy stressors (ie exercise) is critical ime

I got this visual snow and after images from using psilocybin mushrooms. Psilocybin however helped with migraine headaches which were caused by bright lights and moving my eyes. To me it really sounds like HPPD, look it up. Symptoms are almost identical. People think these symptoms are psychological (in terms of psilocybin mushrooms). But if you get same symptoms as me who also had concussion but developed visual disturbances from mushrooms. I think it's nerve damage, makes more sense than it being psychological.
