The Thing (1982)
The Thing is a 1982 American science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter from a screenplay by Bill Lancaster. Based on the 1938 John W. Campbell Jr. novella Who Goes There?, it tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", an extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any of them could be the Thing. The film stars Kurt Russell as the team's helicopter pilot R.J. MacReady, with A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites in supporting roles.

So, Blair ran those simulations and learned the thing would take over the entire world in short order. He destroyed the helicopter, the tractor, and the communication equipment so they would be stranded there. He ensured they couldn't leave, and they couldn't call for others to come. He insured the thing would stay there as well.

@@_MjG_ I guess nothing in this world is really certain. But his actions certainly don't make any sense if he was the Thing then. It wanted to get to civilization, and destroying the communication equipment is counter to that goal. It also would have been prudent for the Thing to destroy or alter Blair's notes, which clued Fuchs in to what their situation was really like. On the other hand, Blair's actions are perfectly consistent with someone who had just discovered what we saw him discover.

You were literally half right about the dog; he was a wolf-mamalute hybrid. His name was Jed. Sometimes when the wolf-dog cross happens, it removes the genetic defect that makes wolves into cuddle puppies. And that definitely happened with Jed. He really unnerved the cast and crew with his quiet, predatory behaviour. He went on to play White Fang and the wolf in The Journey of Natty Gann.

Why do so many people in these reaction videos think that Blair is The Thing when he starts destroying all of the radio equipment, as well as the helicopter? Do you not hear what Blair is saying as he's smashing everything up? "Do you think that Thing wanted to be an animal? No dog could make it a thousand miles in the cold. No, you don't understand! There's a common theory that Blair _was_ the Thing the whole time - smashing up the helicopter and the radio equipment was its way of getting access to parts. Why it didn't just steal the chopper - perhaps it had never assimilated anyone who knew how to fly a helicopter, or perhaps it was trying to leave _the planet_ and not just the continent, who's to say? As for what he was saying - well, the Thing could have just been acting, trying to sell the story of why it had destroyed the things it had. That's the thing about this movie - there's no one answer to the question of who did what when. We never know what the Thing is thinking, or even what its ultimate goal is - not for certain. That's what makes it sit with you long after its over.
@44excalibur
@44excalibur 10 ай бұрын
@@undeadMonk Sorry, but that's hardly a "common theory," and if Blair was the Thing, then he wouldn't have acted the way that he did, which is inconsistent with the behavior of every other person who was the Thing. The fact is that Blair did not become assimilated by The Thing until after the others locked him away in the tool shed. When MacReady and the others go to visit Blair in the tool shed while they are searching for Fuchs, Blair is seen with a rope tied into a noose hanging from the ceiling, and that is the moment when Blair had already been assimilated by the Thing. The first person who had been assimilated by the Thing was Palmer, who was the shadow that is seen in the room the dog enters early in the film. Palmer was the only human other than MacReady who was helicopter-qualified, which is why after the helicopter had been destroyed, the Thing later had to attack Blair and use him to build a small craft to escape using the salvaged parts from the helicopter. The Thing did not need to build a craft that could take it back to outer space, it only needed to get as far as McMurdo Naval Base and from there it could have assimilated anyone and gotten on a boat to the mainland.

The dog that Clark had been looking after was “The Thing” that attacked the other dogs in the kennel. This is why the Norwegians were trying to kill it at the beginning. Copper is the guy they often call “Doc” since he is their doctor. To make it simple, he’s the guy with the nose ring. As for Fuchs, he was the scientist in the glasses who suggested they prepare their own meals and eat out of cans. They later found him burned to death outside in the snow. I can understand wanted to evacuate, but with one or two of the crew members being the Thing, you might risk letting the infection spread.

BEST SCI FI HORROR FILM EVER MADE! Critics were not too kind to this movie when it was released in 1982, as it was released 2 weeks after ET was in theaters. Critics called it "boring, dull, and a wretched excess," as well being called, "One hell of an antidote for ET." However it's gained a cult following and has been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Horror Thriller Films ever made, as well as being the best in John Carpenter's filmography. The Dog Kennel Sequence was done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Stan Winston, as Rob Bottin ended up in the hospital for exhaustion and a bleeding ulcer.

The Blood Test Scene was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. The music score was composed by Ennio Morricone, but part of it was rejected and replaced by John Carpenter's music. Portions of the score can be heard in the Oscar Winning HATEFUL EIGHT soundtrack. The sound effects of The Thing, when it transforms, are that of Bears, Alligators, Snakes, Pigs, Horses and Human screams played backwards or sped up to make it sound otherworldly.

"If it is not human and they were trying to kill it, just leave it there." Remember, the Norwegians were trying to kill the sled dog (wolf hybrid Thing) too. It is interesting to see the reactions of different people to the dog at the beginning of the movie. So many would have been caught up trying to save and cuddle this dog thing and would have been assimilated easily. When I was a kid, I was thinking that the Norwegians were trying to kill the dog for a reason, so don't trust the dog. Blair was not going crazy, he was reacting like anyone should at that point by trying to protect the rest of humanity and himself from whoever might be one of those Things. Later, he had been assimilated and changed how he acted by wanting to "go back inside" so he would not be alone... LOL. The funny thing is that when he "went crazy" he was already infected since he had touched the pencil to the Thing he was autopsying, then touched the pencil to his face. He had not had enough time to fully assimilate yet since it may have just been a cell or two taking over a few of his cells at a time. The Thing does not want to act crazy once it assimilates someone. It would hide and wait until it is alone with someone to assimilate everyone one at a time until there were no more humans. If someone acts crazy, they are probably not assimilated (or fully assimilated). That is how we know Blair is not the Thing when he goes crazy because he would not want to draw attention to himself if he was the Thing. Clark getting shot by McReady was purely self defense regardless of him being human. He attacked MReady with a scalpel. If you take a scalpel to a gunfight and start something up, you will probably lose in the end. Clark was just being paranoid and not thinking clearly, resulting in his demise.

At least one of them was the Thing. At that point all it had to do was freeze, then when the rescue party came in the Spring to take the bodes home it could thaw and take over the world. Interesting reaction mate although I think you missed a lot of the plot. The dog the Norwegians were shooting at & trying to blow up was the Thing & assimilated one of the Americans when it walked into the room & the silhouette (of Palmer?) turned around. The Americans brought the burned body back from the Norwegian camp because they're scientists & scientists do that sort of thing. Blair hadn't gone mad or been assimilated(?) when you saw him smashing up the helicopter & the computers in the camp. He'd already worked out that one or maybe more of his colleagues were probably already Things & if they escaped it would be the end of the world so the camp needed to be isolated. You asked about the doctor (Copper). Well he kinda died when he had both arms bitten off. All this info was up there on screen but you missed it somehow...heyhoe! 😉😊

Very few catch before the dog comes out as it were, so really it picked the perfect thing to imitate to infiltrate the camp. Ppl love dogs and would defend it and not suspect it. Even when it acts unnerving. The practical effects is so much more real than cgi, and the abzolute horror on many young ppl raised on cgi proves how much more effective it is. It looks more real bc it is real. Our brains can usually spot cgi, esp up close. Theres a prequel in 2011 also called The Thing, so original!, that shows what happened in the norwegian camp. The cgi inferior to the practical effects here but its worth watching just for the back story

The machine that Blair-Thing was building was NOT a spacecraft. More like a hovercraft or rocket sled. Either to get to the ocean so it could assimilate the food chain, or simply far enough away that the humans couldn't follow so it could freeze and await rediscovery again. The guys checking the generator are the only ones alive, apart from Childs. Both Childs and Mac are human in the end. The biggest nail in the coffin of the popular "Childs was a Thing" is that if he was, he wouldn't have confronted Mac at end, there. He would've simply walked off into the cold to freeze, knowing that Mac wouldn't be able to do anything to stop him. And Mac would've just froze there, drinking his J&B, unaware that Childs was out there.

"Everybody loves animals right?" But in a MONSTER MOVIE, nothing is as it seems... It's interesting, the *first* time I saw this, I put it together that the dog was the monster. I didn't know HOW, I certainly couldn't have anticipated it's horrific metamorphic abilities, but if you see someone acting irrationally in a monster movie, it's because they're either fighting the monster or they ARE the monster. It felt a lot more likely that the dog was an escaped lab animal or something, carrying some kind of contagion or was some sort of shape-shifter; rather than the TWO men, who were working as a team and performing highly technical tasks like flying a helicopter, somehow being zombies or something. What's crazy though, is that that exact scenario was entirely possible. The last uninfected human at the Norwegian station could have put a message in the dog's collar to warn the rest of humanity and sent it on a desperate mission to find the US station in time; and then two humans, both infected by The Thing, are entirely capable of flying helicopters, shooting guns, speaking in Norwegian, and working as a team to hunt it down before it escapes.

There's another one that claims MacReady was the first one infected, and was a thing the whole time. It's also possible that they're both still human- and it's even possible that everybody is right, and they're both things at the end. I think Carpenter dropped clues throughout the movie so that you'd never be sure who got infected when, and who was a thing at the end.

That’s so interesting. I’m wondering if MacReady was the Thing the whole time. ..How did he make it past the blood test? Maybe he rigged it? Also he was always the one killing the Thing , when they found it. So I’m still curious about that theory!
@AstroXeno
@AstroXeno 9 ай бұрын
@@Letstunein The flaw in the theory is the blood test. We never see MacReady cut his finger, but it seems unlikely the others would have accepted the result if he hadn't done it where they could see. There are some possible explanations of how he could have rigged the test, but they all leave too big a blank for the audience to fill in without further reveals. The MacReady theory also doesn't explain why he would have secretly made the tape warning any rescue party about the thing, since he was supposedly already infected at that point. As to how he got infected, the theory goes that the thing/dog runs up and immediately tries to lick Clark's face, but only manages to lick his glove. After Clark is wounded, MacReady hands him a liquor bottle, which gets thing cells on it from Clark's glove, and infects MacReady shortly thereafter off camera.

John Carpenter himself did say the movie is like how he see the world, who and what to trust in this world. Also, he said something about it's like the diseases, the aides, as no one know who's infected. The Thing is one of the ultimate and classic sci-fi horror that you can't get this kind of genuine unease feeling from the modern sci-fi anymore. The practical effect for this movie back then was indeed amazing, too bad the movie budget were cut off due to these effects, or else we will get to see all of the center staff fate. Fulch supposed to get a small scene before he was killed, same goes to Nauls. There's also a continuation comic, and videogame after this movie as well. Funny enough there's a prequel 2011 film also called "The Thing", it's less impressive due to the CGI usage, but the story isn't so bad.

Perfect ending. Ends very similar to his previous horror film, John Carpenter's Halloween. However, this is much more plausible and more terrifying. There is near no way to beat this Thing. It ended that way because this film is pure distilled Paranoia and distrust. Honestly, its near irrelevant if 1, both or 0 are The Thing, they do not trust eachother, and the audience distrusts 1 or both. You may want to watch this again on your own time and soak it in, remember the characters' names.

The way the film goes from slow burn to full throttle in 5 minutes is fantastic. First, they create all these questions with the dog and the remains of the Norwegian camp. Then this scene answers 80% of it. We know why they were trying to kill the dog, and we know why so much of the camp was burnt. The film goes on to explain (indirectly) why the Norwegians destroyed their only means of survival in this frozen landscape.

The dog at the beginning was the one wandering around camp. People were alone with it for some time. As soon as it was around a bunch of regular dogs and no humans it split open and tried to infect the other dogs and increase biomass.

My theory (take it for what it is) is that the Thing isn't one of the aliens who actually crewed the ship, not is it a naturally occurring entity. I mean, can you even imagine what kind of hellscape planet something like that would evolve naturally on? Without becoming the only lifeform on it? No, I think it was either a bioweapon that broke containment, or a science experiment that got out of control, but either way, I think it was something the aliens on the ship were experimenting with, and it attacked them, forcing them to crash the ship on Earth. And maybe one of them got out after the crash and crawled away, only to be frozen out there. The Thing doesn't seem to be sapient or intelligent, at least not enough to be part of a space-faring race, so I don't think it was the pilot or a crewmember. And I agree, I think it was Childs. ALTHOUGH, the Thing can only take on the form of its victim, it can't reproduce anything that's not a naturally occurring part of the body. Like Childs' earring. So...

One of the best science fiction films. I saw it many times in Italy. The profound meaning, the metaphor of this masterpiece by Carpenter, is the paranoia that takes hold of human beings when they see potential dangerous adversaries in their peers and fight against each other instead of being united, all in a closed environment, claustrophobic, even though the outdoor spaces are enormous but uninhabited. There is also another element that must be taken into consideration: our ancestral fear of being infected by our peers or by others. Furthermore, there is another interpretation: in the Permafrost, in the thousand-year-old ice, there are thousands of micro organisms that it is better not to "reawaken" as is unfortunately happening with the global rise in temperatures, because they are extremely dangerous for our health. In short, nature should be respected in any environment.The splendid soundtrack is by Ennio Morricone. Quentin Tarantino declared that he was inspired by Carpenter's "The Thing" when he filmed "The Hateful Eight" and wanted Morricone for the soundtrack at all costs. A couple of curiosities. In reality, there were two Siberian husky dogs trained to play the part of the Thing that Carpenter used. Since digital effects did not exist in 1982, almost everything was created by hand by Rob Bottin and his collaborators. Due to the enormous amount of work and the consequent stress, Bottin ended up in hospital for fifteen days due to a collapse. Greetings from Milan, Italy. P. S. - You are very cute and nice. 🙂🤎🙂

@@LetstuneinOne last thing about the film, hoping you're interested. There are different theories about the final scene. If you notice when Childs and MacReady are left alone it seems that Childs doesn't have any water vapor coming out of his mouth despite the cold and some claim that in reality what MacReady offers Childs to drink is not whiskey but the petrol left over from when they burned everything. If that were the case, Childs would be a Thing, but Carpenter never wanted to make that clear. Personally I believe that they both sacrificed themselves to save the human species and all other life forms on our planet. Ciao 🙂

All carpenter movies should be watched! Specially Assault on precinct 13, escape from New York, escape from LA, Starman, Big Trouble in little CHINA, they Live, The Fog, Eyes of Laura Mars, Prince of Darkness, and others. Carpenter resented Spielberg for ET AND it took all the money and awards. But Carpenter had the last laugh! Because this movie is much better! Carpenter made his own alien love story with Starman! Carpenter also is the master of the minimalist creepy theme music! Kurt did 4 movies with carpenter! He even did an early TV Elvis movie, for John! This is one of the 3 most important sci-fi movies ever made. Plus Alien and Bladerunner, which are all related, by actors, and some other technicalities. Also the brilliance here is, when the thing busts out, it comes out of u anywhere, any size, shape, etc. The dog trainer should have won an Oscar and the special effects guy should have won an Oscar! He was a twenty one year old college student!😮😮😮. Pro tip, carpenter is still thinking about a sequel! But there's still a massive tie in here with Alien, predator Bladerunner this , and a movie with Kurt Russell called, Soldier! They are related by the beings called Engineers, for Aliens, Terminator, predator, Bladerunner this, and a movie with Kurt Russell movie called, Soldier. Common companies, technology, Replicants, synthetic humans, beings that Engineers created, and even writers and producers! And this is why, prosthetic, robotics, special/ effects, practical effects, are way better than CGI! The three main corporations... Cyberdyne (Terminator) Weyland Corp (alien) and Tyrell Corp (Bladerunner) all did cross work for each other, and also shared some employees!😮 Kurt better have kept the hat! Also the total brilliance here is, once u have been infected, even from just a scratch, u have no idea when u are being taken over! One of the absolute must watch Carpenter films u must watch! Along with Starman, escape from New York, escape from LA, Big Trouble in little CHINA, assault on precinct 13. Go with those, and his Halloween stuff, Eyes of Laura Mars, They Live, The Fog, Christine, In the mouth of madness, prince of darkness, memoirs of an invisible man, vampires! There are critics who say this is Carpenter's version of Communism Socialism, etc , and how it takes over countries, much as a film in the 50s by the same name, i think...

Blair before he was the thing got that and tried to keep everyone there, therefore saving the world. 2. Clark wasnt innocent even if he wasnt infected. It wasnt murder, it was self defense. You dont charge someone with a scalpel 2hen they have a cocked loaded gun. Was mac supposed to let him stab him? It always irritates me how many label mac a murderer when if theyd survived, no court would evrn arrest him bc it was a clear case of self defense. Clark got himself killed.

The Thing prequel was released in 2011, and is also commonly referred to as "The Thing (2011)", with Carpenter's referred to as "The Thing (1982)" to easily differentiate them. Fun fact about the prequel is that they studied a lot of fan information, and even included some aspects that fans have debated about for decades. Additionally, while said to be purely natural formations, it looks as if there's a Xenomorph head carved out of ice when they're entering the ice cave.

* Childs is the thing. Because the real Childs would've known that he has a responsibility to the survival of the human race. He would've known that it was his responsibility to torch MacReady just in case, and then put the revolver that he knew MacReady had right to his own head as he leans over one of those fires so that he falls in it after he blows his own brains out just in case he too got infected. I don't think MacReady was infected though. Did you notice that they never showed MacReady's shack blowing up or catching fire? * I think MacReady's plan was to suggest to Childs that they walk over to his shack, so he can light up the furnace, and then they can hold up there eating and drinking the food and water that he would've had out there until the rescue team arrives. He would probably suggest that Childs lead the way, since he's the one with the flamethrower. Childs wouldn't trust him. So he would suggest that they walk side-by-side. So MacReady chooses to walk on Childs left side, since MacReady is right handed. That way, when he draws the revolver to shoot Childs gas tank so that they explode, he'll have a much better chance of hitting it. MacReady would let it burn as he proceeds to walk to his shack. Unfortunately, there are too many thing samples lying around. * Some of which are still alive, but are merely frozen. Which doesn't seem to kill the things for some reason and the things are well aware of that. Some people say that Childs can't be the thing because he's still wearing his earring at the end, and in the prequel they firmly established that the things do not wear earrings for some reason. However, the writer and director didn't establish that until 2011. The people who worked on the prequel were not the same people who worked on the original. So it's up for debate whether or not that earring proves whether Childs is human or not. I say...NOT. * If you'd like to see some attempts that were made to continue this story where this movie leaves off, just check out the comic books called *The* *Thing* *from* *Another* *World* issues #1 & #2, or watch it on KZbin. Just type in your search *The* *Thing* - *Volume* *1* *motion* *comic.* It continues with *The* *Thing* - *Climate* *of* *Fear,* and then *The* *Thing* - *Eternal* *Vows.* Another attempt at trying to continue where the movie left off is the comic book(or motion comic) called *The* *Thing* *from* *Another* *World:* *Questionable* *Research.* * The 3rd attempt to continue the story after the film came in the form of "The Thing" *video* *game* for Xbox, Playstation 2 and Windows XP. Finally, some people think that the 1978 film called *Invasion* *of* *the* *Body* *Snatchers* is similar to what might happen if one of those things made its way to a big city like San Francisco or something. You can also watch the motion comic of the original "The Thing" novel called *Who* *Goes* *There* - *motion* *comic.* The original novel was written by "John W. My wife Stephanie and I love this movie. For it to be 40+ years old and people to still discuss it today shows that the movie can withstand the test of time. There are a lot of theories out there about who was a Thing and when did people get turned. Especially at the end of the move. Most people think that Childs was a Thing because he vanishes a long time at the end and when he appears again, he's wearing different clothing which is because clothes get destroyed during the Thing taking over the person. Here is another view of the movie. I think that MacReady was a Thing. Norris was the first from the American Camp to get taken over, followed by maybe either Palmer or MacReady. Remember they all act as individual beings, the Things do not work together, but a self preservation mode. At the start of the movie we see MacReady playing a Chess game which is a symbolic theme throughout the entire movie. He was a chess player that was always steps ahead of the other players or the computer program. During Chess, in order to win, you have to sacrifice your own men to win the game. When Windows came into the room where Bennings was getting assimilated, he dropped the key (listen for it). It never shows whom got these keys, but I'm going with it being MacReady. This was the keys that also unlocked the blood vault. This is how MacReady's blood didnt scream from the hot copper wire during the test as he used untainted blood from the sabotage blood vault. We never see MacReady cut his finger to put the blood in the dish for the test. We also never see when Blair gets infected, but the last contact was with MacReady. Blair was still a human when they locked him in the shack, but right before MacReady leaves him alone, he takes a swig of Blair's alcohol that was sitting in front of him on the table, thus infecting the drink. Later on they go back to check in on Blair and hes got a noose hanging from the roof. He then says he is alright now but they still leave him out there. The alcohol bottle is gone from the table. From the sight of the noose, he was contemplating suicide and more than likely finished off the bottle to give him "liquid courage" and this is when he gets infected. Fukes also tell's MacReady that he thinks that they should make their own meals and only eat out of cans as it could infect people this way. (Going back to Blair's computer analysis of the Things cells infecting other cells proves this to be correct.) MacReady's response to Fuke's suggestion was creepy as he stands there, paused, as if he underestimated Fukes and is rethinking what to do with this one, then only replies with an "alright..." then walks out of the room. Shortly after the lights go out and Fukes is next seen burnt up dead. Being a "leader" MacRready never shares the information Fukes suggested to him of not sharing food or drink with the group. Then at the end, Childs gets infected when he is handed the alcohol and drinks from it. As soon as he takes a swig, The Thing theme music kicks in and MacReady laughs as if to say Check Mate.
