The kid is seeking attention. For those who want him to be one thing or another , he’s pandering. The truth is that he’s a talented singer with a large fan base that appeals across the spectrum. He doesn’t want to alienate that base.

That's not the kind of attention one seeks. I think he was just trying to be honest with his fans like he always has... I am, however, suspicious about his motivation. He has surrounded himself with gay influences (Mike and the Moongirls?), and he has proven in the past to be very impressionable and goes through phases where he's been swayed one way or another. Shawn, unfortunately, is a big navel-gazer, highly sensitive, and overthings everything. Being rather effeminate, he has probably had tendences toward both sexes and now he feels he can try out the other side. The fact that Camila was the love of his life for the past 10 years, and now that's over, makes the path open for him to place his attention elsewhere...

He's made some very important points here: Gay people are deprived of normal adolescent development - dating - and that has the effect of delaying normal development - so we have catching up to do. Those deficits are the direct result of homophobia. If he'd been able to explore that as an adolescent, he wouldn't have put it on a shelf for another decade. I don't think he's doing this for attention. We're seeing the consequences of societal homophobia unfold in real time in a public figure. The world will fall into place for him when he meets a man who loves him and who he loves in return. Every Gay person has to invent that for him/herself. I wish him Godspeed now, and only happiness going forward. I'm angry that he was deprived of a normal adolescence because of homophobia. Almost all Gay people were.
