Staying in private accommodation seems to becoming the norm for American turigrinos (tourists). It breaks the old traditions and is responsible for the commercialisation of the Camino experience. I am 76 and have walked 18 Caminos since 2007. I always stay in albergues. Always carry my pack. Always walk full Caminos. My first Camino was from Poitiers to Finisterre. This June/July I will be walking from Le Puy to Santiago. I prefer the company of fellow pilgrims. Nothing better than meeting people from all corners of the world and sitting down with them at a communal meal in an albergue.

My son and I walked from St Jean and shared a room until León. My wife and our daughter joined us there and we arranged to either have an apartment or 2 private rooms into Santiago. We walked 32 days and had an extra day in leon to allow the new arrivals to acclimatize. So we had 33 days total for accommodations and spent $4,600 Canadian for the entire 34 nights (34th night was in Santiago). We knew it was going to be more expensive, but wanted a private room and our own bathroom. As far as availability and booking - we always were booking 5-7 days ahead, depending on where we were - how busy it would be.

Most of these places seem pretty reasonable. I'm aiming for next May-June, and will probably budget around $3500 for just the Camino. Thanks for showing these places!

An excellent series of Camino videos. Off soon on my ninth Camino with accommodation largely booked this time but will keep this resource as a reference for future walks/ accommodations. Think you were wise to largely avoid the ‘tradition’ distances and popular destinations. Thankyou.

Thank you. Yes the traditional stops are getting very crowded so we decided to look for stops before or after and it worked out better. Buen camino.

Can you please explain what you mean by "stops before and after"? It sounds like something I am very inclined to do. Thanks@@360cynandscott
@360cynandscott Жыл бұрын
@@Pablo_J_M hi. When you start at St. Jean Pied de Port in France, the pilgrim’s office will give you a list with albergues and they will also give you a schedule with all the stops along the way to Santiago. The schedule has little squares that are basically sections to hike. That’s their recommendation. Now at the end of each square there’s a stop (city/town) that most people will stay at. So it can become very crowded and you might have a hard time finding an albergue. So we chose the stops before or after the “recommended” stop. This way you can also see how much more or less you have to walk. Hope it helps. Buen camino.

Why is the route called the Camino Frances?
@rdgreeley Жыл бұрын
You must have walked long days, or bus ahead? I didn't see Leon or Astorga. I've walked for several years, so I now walk my favorite sections and leave Sarria to SdComp for the others! Nothing like it. Great videos.

Hi. Yes we had some long days and some short day but we walked the entire time. We didn’t stay in León. We stayed in Villarente before Leon and Oncina passed Leon. Same with Astorga. We stayed in Hospital de Orbigo before Astorga then walked pass it and stayed in Murias de Rechivaldo. We documented everyday in this channel in case you want to check out more videos. Thank you for the comment. 😊

Great informative video and makes it helpful for me to budget using a mix of private and dormitory style. Can I please ask how far in advance you did your private room/hotel bookings? 😊
@360cynandscott Жыл бұрын
Thank you. We started the first couple of days without reservations and we realized really quick that places were booked and we had to go from place to place to find a room. So we decided to start booking the next three places in advance. Then towards the end of April we began to book around 5 or 6 places in advance because we were calling albergues and they didn't have rooms. We used the list from the pilgrim's office to make sure the albergues were near or on the trail. And we booked though Booking.com. Some places we had to call because they were not on that site. Hope it helps. Buen Camino.

Very helpful and informative video. I may have a chance to go on a Camino this year, possibly starting in October, if I do go I'll be in no hurry. Unfortunately I'll probably be traveling alone, did you encounter many lone pilgrims ?
@360cynandscott Жыл бұрын
Yes. We could estimate about 50 percent of pilgrims were alone. Many pair up on the way with people they met and walked stretches of the trail together. And many others just walked alone. Let us know if you have more questions. We have a video about tips for the Camino in case you would like to watch it. Here’s the link. Buen camino ☺️ kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZirqqSMh96Jask

Are those room prices per person or for the double? Those rates seem fair and attainable if for the both of you. You answered my question there at the end.

Hi. Yes the rates were total for both of us. They charged by the room not by the person. Now if you stay in “open bay” albergue then it would be per person and those rates vary. Let us know if you have more questions. Thanks for the comment. ☺️

most of the camino walks I've seen on you tube the presenters stayed in private albergues some of the time. I would put away more money allotted for private because you are only going once or once a year? save up to go private if you can.
